Like it or not, Google's Gmail application might soon start displaying advertisements. Yup, that's the app pre-loaded on most Android smartphones and tablets – the app used by over hundreds of millions of people worldwide. How do we know? At the end of the day, like every other company, Google is there to make profits and to keep up with updates and features, for one of the highest used app, would require tremendous resources.
All I ask is give us the option of removing ads by charging a one-off fee or something.

i totally agree with u , its logical , if there is not a paid version for the app i will be disappointed with Google .

Gmail usage is free, so somehow we have to pay for it. I see no problem with this, there are ads already in maps or in the web version of gmail. Android is free and so are its best services like maps, mail and so on, and Google must earn money somehow, otherwise we would have to pay a license fee like with windows. So ads are ok, as long as they are not too obtrusive.

outlook and yahoo are both awful to use. They completely destoryed hotmail when they turned to outlook.

The comparison with Outlook is unfair, since Outlook is a paid service, because the windows phone license is not free. You cannot compare services from companies who rely essentially on ads to services from companies like Microsoft that earn mainly from license fees.
What's more, the web version of outllok, which is free, does have ads.
As to yahoo, the web version has much more ads than gmail. The app is currently ad-free, but you can be sure that they will have to monetize in the future.

Ads in my opinion is why AOL became so irrelevant. Google makes enough money they are becoming greedy. Greed and lack of innovation seems to be the root of all companies eventual down fall. I hope innovation never stops, because like all companies they are starting to let greed get the best of them.

No thank you. Ads in core apps is pushing it too far. I have a feeling involving kitkat in the naming of you OS version will inevitably lead to more ads and junk.
YouTube is already ridiculous (thank God for Adblock)

Except now that isn't enough. I get popups asking me to sign up with google+ and to use my real name. So now I only watch videos if they don't trigger a popup, otherwise i'll just use the back button.

you can turn this off somewhere in the settings, but sadly your average user doesn't know that and will just enter their details or sign into g+ as requested.

Not necessarily, Google keeps making it harder to deal with each week. It used to be so easy to defer or ignore it completely.
So far Youtube is trying to force me to use my real name for anything from posting to watching a video that may contain explicit content or even mild cursing.

When it comes to desktop software, I'm fine with Google embedding ads. They are providing us with a service, and that is their recompense. However, mobile is a different story. Here we are purposely paying for the mobile product they provide. If they aren't bringing in enough revenue, they need to re-work their relationships with manufacturers and carriers, not impact the user experience of their customers.
It's not the end of the world, but it could be the beginning of a very slippery slope, and is something that could push me away from the platform.

This is exactly how I feel about it. Adds on the desktop are fine. But in the confined space of a screen in the palm of my hand, no way. I just won't use the app anymore. In fact, I might jump platforms soon anyway, for a phone at least.

Why use their email reader? Just use the native email reader/composer app provided by your phone.

What a lame excuse to go back to an iphone. What if they put ads in ios gmail lmfao! You might as well drop your tv,cut your eyes out,junk your computer,radio while you're at it. Get over it! Ads are everywhere and have been for years. I find it funny people get upset with ads when the smartphone era hit. True definition of SPOILED!

That is not Apple's operating model but it is indeed Google's operating model. That is why they (and similarly Amazon's) model, store, aggregate and filter through your emails, contacts, pictures, and all other applications that you get free and tailor advertising to specific to you and sell you info to other companies. But you do get a free OS (or really the phone makers like Samsung gets it free and not so much you). Great deal!

I don't mind if they're non-invasive and VERY relevant ads... stuff like Newegg or Amazon deals or motorcycle manufacturers in my case.
