i keep trying to see the point of the whole tablet story... why would i want a device that is beaten by power and functionality by any low end smartphone of today?

This isnt a good deal at all. The best tablet for the specs and buck is the Ainol Novo 7 Auroa....comes with ICS on a 7" IPS 1024x600 capacitive touch screen, 1gb ram, 1.5ghz processor, front camera, and surprising very thin compardd to tbe other chinese tablets. Its $162 no tax. Now this is a bargain with ICS.
