Approximately over 200,000 HTC EVO 4G smartphones were sold over the weekend?

As we've reported earlier today, Sprint made an announcement on how the HTC EVO 4G sits alone by itself as having the best sales on launch day in their history – beating out other handsets like the Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre. Even though they doused the handset with plenty of adulation, there were no exact figures pointing to the reality of what kind of success came along with its launch. However, an inside Sprint contact indicates that “well over” 200,000 smartphones were sold over the weekend – which goes to say that it beats the figures previously seen with the Pre and Instinct. If the rumored figure holds true, it could give the HTC EVO 4G the best debut for any Android powered smartphone. On the flip side of things, it is still not enough to beat the original iPhone's tally of 273,000 devices sold at a similar time frame. Some argue that the lack of WiMAX coverage across the country affected its sales potential, but nonetheless it looks like HTC and Sprint will be celebrating the good news.

I really want this phone. I'm not eligible for an upgrade until December. That extra $10.00 Premium, not sure if it's worth it though. LOL.

Glad to see the phone have the success they were hoping for, now if Sprint can step up their roaming agreements for 3g and WiMax networks they'll get even more subscribers.

It is absolutely deserved. Never have I had the pleasure in owning such a beast of a electronic device. This will without question be my cell phone for at least the next year, if not longer. I love my Evo!

Awesome sales.... but if they sold "well over" 200,000 units, do we REALLY need the work "Approximately" in the article title. You were told it sold "well over" 200,000, hence that is not an approximation. AND "well over 200,000" is itself an approximation anyway.

1st of all - congrats to sprint on some amazing numbers! I cant wait til october to get this phone!!!! and 2nd - was it really necessary to put the original iPhone sales numbers in here? people that care about this phone care not about the iPhone...so really there was no need for that to be mentioned. i am now reminded why i only come to this site about once a week, when before i used to come several times a day...the iphone and verizon ass kissing is really annoying. this is phonearena...not iphonearena
