Apple's new iPad graphics benchmarked, beats every mobile device out there

0. phoneArena posted on 13 Mar 2012, 09:52

The new iPad scored the breathtaking 15, 924 points, 50%+ more than the iPad 2, which was the previous graphics champion. Apple iPhone 4S, which also sports the iPad 2's dual-core PowerVR is third, trailed closely by the best Android representative - the quad-core Acer Iconia Tab A510 with NVIDIA's Tegra 3...

great progress Apple :)

To All User, I have only One question
Apple devices have more powerfull GPU in it, but they do not make it..they buy it from imagination tech... Then why are not samsung, lg, motorola doing the same just plug the best gpu in ur SOC and apple will have nothing to prove...?

Yeah, I'm getting mine this Friday. So excited!

I just wish Apple ditched the 4:3 screen shape and went with a more wide screen shape like most android tabs.. Anyways, I'll probably take a look at the 7.85" when it hits shelves as this will be way more portable.

104. weirdfisher posted on 14 Mar 2012, 09:20

if they change it, it's not apple

53. ardent1 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:27 2

It is definitely a "game" changer again, since the new horsepower will address the next wave of digital textbooks, the new Apple iTV, and other applications that need more graphics capabilities.

The New iPad is again one step closer to replacing the laptop. 11,666 mAH battery, 4G, multitasking, virtual keyboard or voice dictation, with a display with over 3 million pixels, etc. on a package that is about 1.5 pounds.

Btw, the highest resolution on my laptop is only 1920x1080. Just food for thought.

59. Whateverman posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:41

This is a great step, but lets not be too quick to say everything Apple comes out with is a game changer. It not really changing anything here. One thing I will say is they are kicking Android's but in the tablet race. It seems, the Android OEMs never take the lead on anything . Sure they were first with quad core chips but it's still as though thy do just enough to keep up with last years iDevices. They never set out to game changer of their own.

61. remixfa posted on 13 Mar 2012, 14:05 2

Apple finally pulled the first punch. But dont think Samsung is sitting around. Lets wait to see what they unviel at their samsung party for the SGS3 and flagship tablet before we start handing out crowns. You also have OMAP5 and T4 out this year.

Besides, this is just a GPU test. Apple didnt do anything to the GPU, they just got a new one from PowerVR which is the dominating leader in mobile GPU tech right now. The CPU itself is not at the head of the pack.

93. Lucas777 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 21:18 1

wait a sec.. so apple didnt pull the first punch with the original ipad? was there some successful android tablet i am unaware of? and the gpu is more important for the graphics part i believe… the cpu will run ios smoothly but the gpu gets the good games and heavy tasks going i think..

94. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 21:21 1

as my mama would say "all up in our Kool-Aid, don't even know the Flavor." :P

76. ardent1 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 16:30 4

>It not really changing anything here.

Apple iPhone -- game changer (it crushed RIMM and any of those Palm Treo type smartphones with stylus)

iPod Touch 4G & iPhone - helps destroys digital camera market and portable camcorder like Flip, etc.

iPad -- in its first year, outsold all the MS-Intel tablets that have been in the market for about 10 years, and quickly displaces the netbook as a portable computing device.

Apple 4 - retina display 300+ pixel per inch

Those were just some example and if they are game changers, just ask yourself why is the market following Apple's footsteps.

People like videos and pictures meaning the New iPad will allow the users to have more fun editing their files. The days of polaroid and b&W and color photo albums are over. People now want memories in multimedia in a simple, easy to use package and the New iPad delivers on this front.

84. Whateverman posted on 13 Mar 2012, 18:08 1

Youre going through Apple's entire history to proove that this one particular product is a game changer? I still have to disagree. The original ipad was a game changer becuase it got everyone to think differently about what a tablet should be. This is just another version of that same product with bumped up specs. People are gonna do the exact same things with this ipad that the did with the othet ipads.

97. remixfa posted on 14 Mar 2012, 00:44 1

Ardent.. quit thumbing yourself up.. for real.. its sad.

Game changers?

the first iphone was a game changer. it was.

ipod touch wasnt a game changer, it was an iphone without a radio.. kind of stupid waist of money if u ask me, since they were just about the same price.

the ipad was a segment changer, not a game changer. it created its own segment "large freakin media device". MS's tablets were full computers. Big difference between the two. And yea, MS's tablets sucked because mobile technology wasnt at a point to handle what MS wanted to do. My how thats changed. The "game changer" this year is going to be full PC compatibility on the mobile tablet space.. brought to you by MS, not apple's over sized ipod.

Apple didnt invent retina, LG did, so technically an android manufacturer was the "game changer". And the iphone4 was powered by a Samsung Hummingbird chipset which was best in class. All the "game changing" came from android manufacturers that were willing to sell to Apple.

Your a fool. Plain and simple. "high sales" dont equate to "game changer".

100. E.N. posted on 14 Mar 2012, 01:49 2

remixfa, you're fanboy is showing again. Basically you're saying that Android is the real game changer. What you need to start doing is separate Android and the manufacturers. Everything Samsung/LG produces/engineers does not equate to Android. Sadly, I'm sure you already know this but you probably just couldn't help yourself when it comes to taking another jab at Apple. You could have left it as LG technically created the screen, but you had to add "an android manufacturer" as if the two were directly related, suggesting the android is the better and more innovate OS, which is pretty stupid in this discussion.

Apple's engineers aren't just sitting around doing nothing, so I'm pretty sure that the retina display and/or the A processors have to have some kind of significant difference/addition for them to call it their own without getting sued. If the display was completely LGs technology, they would have used it first in their devices, plain and simple. When the Apple first unveiled their retina display to the public, they said that it took them years to develop and that it would possibly take years for their competitors to match it. That statement alone should be proof enough that Apple is the mastermind behind some of these technology, even if they're not directly manufacturing them. If Apple was just buying screens, why would it take years for the competitors to match?

103. remixfa posted on 14 Mar 2012, 07:37

did i say anything about android in my statement?

you sure are inferring a whole hell of a lot to write that much..lol

106. darkkjedii posted on 14 Mar 2012, 15:54 1

awwww shutup. u sound like a jealous old whinny lady.shut the heck up,and go get laid. apple, and google don't need ur compliments and disses. get off androids d**k for crying out loud.

69. nnaatthhaannx2 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 15:21 1

not quite, the title states that it "beats every moblie device out there" but there is no metion of the PS Vita, which may be even more portable than the iPad and other tablets.

2. antmiu2 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 09:57 11

sorry i dont thinks it beats tegra 3 will wait for other source

8. frydaexiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:05 17

A5X only beats Tegra-3 in graphics, only the scrolling between homepages and games are smoother (something iFans care alot about). Which further iterates what I've been saying, the iPad is a game console that can't do anything else but play half baked games and videos.

The improved graphics won't do the iPad any good for anything else, etc. multi-tasking (which iOS still can't do)

38. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 12:50

yeah, it was really the only boost that was practical for something running iOS and also for something pushing that many pixels.

48. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:15

lol okay hate the King much? DEFINITELY not a bad comment. xD

70. nnaatthhaannx2 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 15:22

(aka PS Vita owns all)... till next year......

37. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 12:49 1

yessir! this GPU beats the pants off of Nvidia's Geforce and anything else for that matter. let's hope that Samsung is using PowerVR again in the new Exynos. o:

49. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:15

and again! :P

62. remixfa posted on 13 Mar 2012, 14:06 1

i hope they switch back to powerVR as well. I dont understand why they ever left them, unless Apple pulled some sort of exclusivity deal with them.

77. rd_nest posted on 13 Mar 2012, 16:42 2

No, it's confirmed that they are using Mali in Exynos 5-series.

http://blogs.arm.com/multimedia/676-samsung-confirms-mali-is-in-the-exynos-5250-processor/

It's definitely going to be Mali-T604 in Exynos 5250. That itself is 5x times more powerful GPU compared to Mali400.

In that case, it would score same/higher compared to a 543MP4.

And note that Exynos 5250 has the highest memory bandwidth compared to any other SoC. This could prove vital for high performance gaming.

88. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 20:36

we'll see but the Mali400 is neck at neck with the year old SGX540 that has a single graphics core although it was slightly higher clocked to 384MHz i believe that's saying a lot.

98. remixfa posted on 14 Mar 2012, 00:46 1

Mali is nice.. and yea, its a nice alternative, but I still wish they stayed with PowerVR. Between both roadmaps, VR still has the edge over Mali. And when it comes to fanboy yelling matches, thats going to come up a bit.

68. HTCFreak posted on 13 Mar 2012, 14:37 2

So first you thought that it wouldn't beat Tegra 3, and now you have the results and you still won't belive it, tsss... so stubborn -_-

3. mrvid posted on 13 Mar 2012, 09:57 5

Do you guys ever use spell check??

4. frydaexiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 09:58 8

"50% more than the dual-core version of the same GPU that is in the Apple iPad 2"

New GPU = 4 cores
Old GPU = 2 cores

Of course it's going to be 50%, were you expecting anything less?

50. davin8r posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:16 3

Actually, according to your logic, 4 vs 2 would be a 100% improvement (i.e. twice the power). "50% more" is 1.5 times the power of the 2 core GPU.

71. xtremesv posted on 13 Mar 2012, 15:25

In computing, there's a factor of scaling when more cores are added. If there hasn't been any architectural improvements within the core then scalability will decrease. Besides software has to be optimize in order to utilize more cores.

5. ilia1986 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:00 5

Nice.. But this is mainly useful for gaming.

18. anywherehome posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:51 5

yes, it is a toy so what do you want more? :)

22. good2great posted on 13 Mar 2012, 11:12 5

hahaha yall dudes are some "bleeping" haters bro...

you know dang well the ipad does a lot more than gaming...lol

but at the same time... the mobile industry is soon to be taking over gaming...

watch when android and apple both get deals with big console titles for their tablets... you know they have bluetooth controllers out there for both tablets...

chill out man... the specs dont lie... its a beast graphics tablet just give it its props...

we all know in some other categories the ipad is behind...

57. romeo1 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:37 1

I think that will take a long long time before that happens.
Tablets can't compete with pc's and ps3/x360.
And keep in mind that the x360 is already here since 2005 ;)

6. arcq12 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:01 4

@ilia1986 and most people use iPads for gaming..

10. ilia1986 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:06 9

Which is sad since it's really the most you can do with it.

You can't even play hardcore games since it lacks a keyboard\mouse and\or a controller.

33. taco52 (banned) posted on 13 Mar 2012, 12:16 2

You're a pathetic hater. You can do more on an iPad than any other tablet because of the apps. Unlike android developers actually make apps for the iPad.

40. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 12:53 2

lol okay have fun making your iPad say "Moo!" from dozens of different apps on your iPad while i multitask like a beast. ;P

54. 1701nino posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:32 1

Hahaha, you can multitask all you want, without any quality apps i mean you talk about this things like i wanna go from one app to another all day long.i use my ipad in more ways then you can use that droid crap.

56. EclipseGSX posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:37 1

yes now you can play your words with friends faster than ever in HD, congrats on being a loser

60. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 13:44

101. frydaexiii posted on 14 Mar 2012, 06:01

Apps apps apps? That's all you guys have huh? Guess what? There are no launcher apps for you, no proper file manager app, no task manager app, no real office app since you know using iTunes and all, don't expect to do any real work on that.

So all your "apps" are basically just games and fart apps. Have fun with that. You give tacos a bad name...change it to something no one cares about

13. andro. posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:30 10

Playing the exact same games they play on their iphones and ipod touches its revolutionary

15. ilia1986 posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:41 2

Ultra revolutionary. Oh look! A combat flight sim! let's press randomly on things on the screen and hope for the best result lol.

Where is the 4x improvement over tegra 3 Apple ? Again marketing not results !

41. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 12:54

definitely enough results, maybe even more than enough but not enough to live up to the hype they started at the announcement.

11. krysis posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:21

that's cool and all, but i just can't really get into gaming on a tablet/phone. i need physical controls like a vita or 3ds.

oh and how many times can you say "we kid" in an article?

12. buggerrer posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:27 8

thanks to the new Exynos .. ops! i mean A5x :p

42. KingKurogiii posted on 13 Mar 2012, 12:56

i'll say this for Apple they were much smarter than Samsung when it came to deciding what GPU to use. Samsung should have stayed strong with IT.

14. 1701nino posted on 13 Mar 2012, 10:38 4

Hate to say I told you so;) Well thats the thing you jelaous fandroid must admit defeat. You always say ipad can't do this or that, but the truth is you're just jelaous that Apple made a better product then any other tablet out there.I can do everything on my ipad and more then on my PC sometimes. Watch out there's a new sherrif in town;P

20. EclipseGSX posted on 13 Mar 2012, 11:05 2

OMG the newest tablet is the best right now NO WAI MAN. New stuff isnt supposed to be the best...STFU

23. gallitoking posted on 13 Mar 2012, 11:14 3

so you admitt the new ipad is the best tablet out there... just checking.. usually fandroids will never admit there is a superior device not using Android OS

25. EclipseGSX posted on 13 Mar 2012, 11:16 6

Yes i'll admit it, I have no problem saying there is a better product. Is it the best right now, sure but that's subjective to your taste. Will it be in the future not likely, that's the beauty of technology there is always something better around the corner.
