Apple's iOS closes the gap with Android in the U.S.

0. phoneArena posted on 06 Mar 2013, 15:09

The latest data from comScore has arrived and it shows that compared to the three months ended last October, Apple had an outstanding three month period that ended in January when it came to U.S. sales; Apple tacked on a 3.5% percentage point gain to widen its lead over Samsung as the Korean manufacturer had a 1.9% percentage point gain in the same period...

You laugh, but it's true. Android doesn't really have much of a lead in the US without the aid of prepaid carriers and cheap phones.

13. wendygarett posted on 06 Mar 2013, 17:17 9 6

Too bad US has a lot of complacent sheeple like you :)

15. Zero0 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 17:31 4 4

For those keeping track:
-No iPhones on prepaid.
-No free on-contract iPhones.

Sounds legit.

16. gwuhua1984 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 17:42 7 2

99 cent iPhone with 2 year contract isn't considered cheap?

18. Zero0 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 17:55 1

99 cents towers over the price of some Android phones which often go for a cent or less. ;)

Verizon has a free iPhone 4. Not sure if any other carriers do.

26. gwuhua1984 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:36 2

You mean some outdated or entry level smartphones.

Why are we always forgetting that SGS3 was the top seller last year, while the pricing at $199 with 2 year contracts? iPhone 4 (99 cent) and 4S (99 dollars) were the only ones making remarkable sales during the holidays due the price drop cause by the release of iPhone 5.

30. Doakie posted on 06 Mar 2013, 21:13 2

Doesn't Virgin Mobile and Cricket have prepaid iPhones? Plus AT&T started the free iPhone wagon.

40. Zero0 posted on 07 Mar 2013, 14:47

Alright. I need sarcasm punctuation now.

Is "/s" sufficient?

33. pokerc posted on 06 Mar 2013, 22:12

Cricket has iphones...

17. gwuhua1984 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 17:44 2

I think it's normal for iOS to get a bump around this time. SGS3 hype died down, and people are waiting for the next best thing from Android manufacturers to drop. Android marketshare will most likely rise again when the devices gets on the market.

24. tedkord posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:17 3

Of course. And, more importantly, every year Android grows more than iOS, because the little bump for iOS only lasts a few months.

Even with the supposed best launch ever of an iPhone, Android still remains the majority mobile OS even in the US.

29. gallitoking posted on 06 Mar 2013, 19:52 2 3

so you mean that the current Androids on the market are not worth it

35. chadrick0814 posted on 07 Mar 2013, 00:50

Wasn't it Tim Cook who told Apple shareholders October that sales were down because everyone was waiting on the iPhone 5? I guess he didn't think the current iPhones were worth it.

41. Zero0 posted on 07 Mar 2013, 14:49

What is this I can't even.

The people who want an Android phone either bought a flagship last year when they came out (SGS3, largely) or are waiting for this year's flagship (SGS4, probably). Meanwhile, the people who wanted an iPhone waited for the iPhone 5 or the price drop for the 4 and 4S, and are now done buying iPhones until fall.

27. mityblumpkin posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:44 1

verizon has iphone on prepaid if you pay full retail of 550.00

37. anywherehome posted on 07 Mar 2013, 01:04

how many times have you considered your suicide? :)
deal with that Apple has an inferior OS and is 10 years behind Android, see the real innovations:

It was the holiday season and the iphone5 just launched. Android will be gaining market share again soon as the iphone ages and new flagships launch like the One, Xperia Z, and GS4.

4. wp8forever (unregistered) posted on 06 Mar 2013, 15:49 4 5

I know like that is easy , 100 phones vs one you can even put some wp there my preference lol and still , no one can handle apple , lets be honest ppl really think apple is going down just imagine , if blackberry had time to recreate bb10 being almost broke lol imagine apple how much time they have with 406 billings and yeah i love wp8 , I'm just realistic.

21. taz89 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:11 2

If you look at it properly it's not as simple as 1 phone vs 100 it doesn't really matter here.. Why well if you want ios you must get the iPhone which means all ios sales goes to apple where as with android or wp8 that's not the case as if you want android or wp8 you can pick a number or oems which is why it's hard for a single ios or wp8 oem to get a single phone to sell as much as an iPhone as unlike apple where it gets all ios sales, oems like HTC lg nokia etc don't get all android or wp8 sales.. Another way to look at us if there is 100 who want an ios device apple get all 100 customers where as say 100 people want wp8, Nokia might get 50 HTC might get 10 Samsung might get 10 customers etc... So even though people love to make this comparison it's not a apples to apples to comparison lol no pun intended

32. iushnt posted on 06 Mar 2013, 21:34 1

I totally agree with you.. Apple has easy sales due to less fragmentation and it's not as some people say like 100 vs 1.. Android OEMs are not friends, they also compete with each other.. If iPhone competes with 100 phones then galaxy s3 also competes with 100phones. The difference is that galaxy s3 has to compete more vigorously because it has to compete separately inside the android world too where iPhone does have to compete within the iOS environment..

34. iushnt posted on 07 Mar 2013, 00:45 1

****IPhone doesn't have to compete in iOS platform. ****

5. daddysbeenabadgirl posted on 06 Mar 2013, 15:51 3 1

Well Duh... iPhone 5 was released near the end of 2012.

NEWSFLASH from 3-4 months after the S4 is released. "Android closes the gap with iOS in the U.S"

25. tedkord posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:19 4

Actually, that would be Android extends its lead...

6. shamataa posted on 06 Mar 2013, 15:51 2

Interesting that BB is ahead of Microsoft. Apple probably got lucky that is ahead of Samsung but no worries b/c it will be back to normal when the GS 4 and Note 3 launches in the US in a few months. HTC will be number 2 and LG with their phone will be number 3 and Motorola will be number 4 with the X phone and Apple will be number 5. Even with the 5S it won't help much.

7. Dommer posted on 06 Mar 2013, 15:53 4 5

Guys, really? Obviously the last couple of comments obviously come from a SmartPhone think tank, not.

Samsung did everything they could to GIVE AWAY GS IIIs for $99 and they still trailed the iPhone! You should appreciate the iPhones innovation, without it you would all still be punching in phone numbers on small keys and with fat fingers.

12. daddysbeenabadgirl posted on 06 Mar 2013, 16:42 4

Get off your sheep fanboy. Nobody said the iPhone or Apple isn't innovative. Since you lack common sense and basic math skills I'll break it down for you.

When a flagship phone gets released sales for that quarter tend to high then they slowly drop as better technology or phones follow. If you think for a second that the new phones coming out (s4, moto X, HTC one) won't turn the ship the other way you are living under the same denial rock as Alan.

And yes in another year the 5s will get released pushing up sales for the quarter and you will get excited and get another woodie when Alan tries spin the facts making it look like Apple is king.

22. taz89 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:13 3

Just like how sales of the iPhone 4s slowed down with the iPhone 5 being close to launch it makes sense for s3 sales to slow down with the s4 just round the corner...

31. Doakie posted on 06 Mar 2013, 21:19 1

I appreciate the iPhone, and I appreciate what Steve Jobs did to get the smartphone competition going. I really look forward to getting a HTC One though. So sexy, plus its front facing stereo speakers are exactly the innovation I'm looking for.

9. andro. posted on 06 Mar 2013, 16:05 4 1

its funny the difference in market share in th US next to everywhere else in the world,it makes you wonder whats gone wrong in the us and why people are so suscepitble to apples sales tecnique and gimmicks
Worldwide android will surely have 75% of the market by end of this year while ios weighs in around the 20 mark

23. taz89 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:16 1

I think it could have to with the fact that Apple is an American company and probably some American think it's patriotic to buy an American device aka the iPhone even though pretty much everything in it is anything but American .

10. jroc74 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 16:19

BB and WP is more interesting. Neither one seems like they can get a hold of 3rd....

BB10 vs WP8......the Z10, Q10 vs WP8 phones... Whose gonna get 3rd place?

14. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 06 Mar 2013, 17:22

As they say, only in America.

19. nikenturd (unregistered) posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:01

Americans are so gullible I guess, they still think its 2007....that explains why the rest of the world chooses Android.

36. chadrick0814 posted on 07 Mar 2013, 01:02 1

I'm guessing that the iPhone 5 being released first in the US may have a little bit to do with it. Or maybe you're right. The US, home of the airplane, computer, internet, space shuttle, automobile, cellular phone, and Android, is just full of idiots.

20. taz89 posted on 06 Mar 2013, 18:04 4

Am pretty sure this is normal happened last year too... Apple takes lead when new iPhone comes out and as for Samsung it makes sense they sales will go down this quarter considering that s4 is literally round the corner.. The same will happen with the iPhone when the iPhone 5s gets closer too launch... As usual there will be the same old comments happening here without people actually taking time to see what's happening...

39. roscuthiii posted on 07 Mar 2013, 02:26 1

Why is it people seem surprised when they release these numbers? It's friggin' wash, rince, repeat. Every damn period other OEM's are releasing their flagships, they are in the lead. Then in the 4th quarter, Apple releases it's, um, flagship, and then it's in the lead. And then the cycle repeats itself yet again the next year. It's not 'rocket surgery' people.

Also, there are now a lot of promotional free iPhones. Probably didn't hurt iOS's market share any. I know my mom took home a free iPhone, and promptly returned it.
Alan, if you wanna polish your APPL this much, why not wait until they give a break down, if they ever do, on the stats as to how many were iP5's, iP4S's, iP4's, etc.
