Apple's iOS 6 beta Maps app compared to Google Maps
0. phoneArena 14 Jun 2012, 08:30 posted on
If you downloaded the developer beta of iOS 6 and tried out its most distinctive feature - Cupertino's own Maps app - you might have noticed something's lacking compared to the previous Maps app, which was powered by Google's tech. That something is not only Street View, which can be somewhat compensated by the Flyover function in iOS 6, but the actual level of street detail that the fledgling new maps and navigational software of Apple reveals...

Wow. Apple has some catch up to do on their maps.
42. ieronz (Posts: 9; Member since: 12 Jun 2012)
obviously, but you must give 'em credit. in comparison to google's over 7 year old map. Having this for a start isn't bad at all, as we all know, it'll take some time.
61. anywherehome (Posts: 971; Member since: 13 Dec 2011)
it is easy co copy than start from the very beginning ;)
how do you deal with this almost complete copy of Google maps? won't you commit a suicide? :)
66. ieronz (Posts: 9; Member since: 12 Jun 2012)
Look I'm being rational here. So I really don't care about the amount of thumb downs from ignorant folks. If the map was lacking really bad, then of course we could boo them. But they've tried something at least, so credit them. That's all. Would do the same for another company.

Well at least its 1000x better than the maps program currently implemented in iOS.
53. JonGarrett (Posts: 29; Member since: 06 Aug 2011)
all apple has to do is make their map app prettier to look at than Googles and iDiots will drool all over it regardless of how much its lacking.

Yeah Damn makeup has been screwing with minds of men for long now....

I am definitely excited to experience the Map software in iOS 6 but, judging from the images above, Google maps looks much cleaner and definitely more polished. I guess lets see what Apple offers once testing is done and the final product is released.

Is Apple really trying to hit the self destruct button these days?!
68. hiBreed (Posts: 90; Member since: 29 May 2012)
they won't have to, its a dying ecosystem okay!?!
4. good2great (Posts: 1020; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
the only fair comparison is to do screenshots when apple releases iOS 6 in the fall...
even then it still wouldn't be fair because Google Maps has a big reputation and has been developed over years vs apple developing theirs almost a year ago.
but they DEFINITELY have some catching up to do!!!
28. SlimSoulja86 (Posts: 640; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
Here is something i dont get, dont u think its fair to compare them since they will be competitors? And since Apple made it sound like its the best thing ever? Its like some ppl that r saying its not fair to compare iPgone 4S with Samsung Galaxy S3 cos iPhone 4S its updates that they should compare it to iPhone 5 which doesnt xsists at all, sometimes iFans sounds really stupid if u ask me. Not that im saying u sound stupid.
33. SlimSoulja86 (Posts: 640; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
Excuse my typos. Updated = outdated, iPgone= iphone, u get my point
11. jmoita2 (Posts: 930; Member since: 23 Dec 2011)
More like a crude copy. Like those "Droid" tablets straight outta Hong Kong. This is a major loss of face for Apple. They shouldn't even have released anything. And yes, they are bent on self destruction as of late. They have become their own worst enemy.
34. SlimSoulja86 (Posts: 640; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
NO! NO! NO! APPLE DOESNT COPY! IT INNOVATES
50. drnggaj33 (Posts: 127; Member since: 29 Feb 2012)
no they do pantents .....google should sue tho apple does it all the time ijs ....theres samsung parts in a your iphone but apple doesnt tell u ;) thats y the sam s3 and nuxus is way better then the *** ass iphone 4s and 5

Thumbs down, i was bn sarcastic, geeez!

if they have a patent, then go for it... if not then they cant really do much...
6. CharlieAtInfinity (Posts: 253; Member since: 10 Apr 2012)
Apple Map's dont even look like they are finished...
44. Lucas777 (Posts: 2121; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
did u not read the BETA slapped on it.. thats why it isnt released yet...
8. Nizar (Posts: 4; Member since: 30 Dec 2011)
Apple maps does render some of the icons better than google maps. But I'd rather get more information compared to a beautiful map with less info.
51. jroc74 (Posts: 3621; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Function over form.....sound like me....lol.
And I agree 100%. Thats why I like Android so much.
9. appleDOESNT.com (Posts: 374; Member since: 19 Nov 2011)
I think their point and mine has been, Google maps is amazing and free. Apple did not need to waste all that time and money developing this, a competitor that will always be inferior to Google maps. What Google has accomplished is amazing with street view (basically the entire world photographed) sat view, indoor view, 3d view and soon to be offline.
This move also takes away from both solutions now. Separating the markets means less traffic info to Google and iMaps, hurting both solutions. As usual, Apple effin things up for the consumers with their selfish, narrow visions that only serves to screw the consumers.
13. Fallout09 (Posts: 408; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Wow… I complete missed that issue where traffic updates are going to hit. Nice catch.
17. appleDOESNT.com (Posts: 374; Member since: 19 Nov 2011)
Yep, this is a BIG deal. Basically a free amazing solution that basically is the defacto standard in mapping for billions of people (yes billions between android, pc, the web, the world over uses Google maps/earth) will now be eliminated from millions of users iDevices. Those millions of iDevices used to send info to Google. Those billions of Google maps users will now in turn, not be sending info to the millions of iDevices.
Both solutions are hurt but iDevices will be in the major minority here so their solution was totally unnecessary and hurts EVERYONE! Thanks Apple, as usual a day late, a dollar short and TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!
Next time waste you money on playing catchup with something that needs catching up! Maybe like, umm widgets? Prolly cost you slightly less than this billion dollar mapping venture you entered for no effing reason!
37. Ivan6479 (Posts: 243; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
Actually Google maps is not free for Apple. They were actually having to pay licensing fees in order to use the software, which was agreed upon way back when, so this is probably another reason Apple wanted to get away from that. This is most likely why they recently bought out a company that already specialized in mapping technology, so it isn't like they had to start from the ground up. Unfortunately for Apple though it looks like they shot themselves in the foot, so their new maps is a big fail just like their new iOS is. LOL
10. MartyK (Posts: 665; Member since: 11 Apr 2012)
I think Apple remove those extra/other streets on their map in order to keep their mapping cleaner...they need to patent this clean mapping system of theirs...lol
14. Fallout09 (Posts: 408; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
No, Apple is only including maps to addresses where people use Apple products. Apparently no iPhone/iPad users live on those cross streets. Pretty soon Apple will make it were users can only text/call other Apple users.
12. kanagadeepan (Posts: 565; Member since: 24 Jan 2012)
All these time + money wasted just for ego... Well done apple....
15. PapaSmurf (Posts: 5797; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Is apple trying to shoot itself in the foot? Google Maps is the most popular map app in the world and they're trying to compete against it... Waste of time and money if you ask me.
48. nyuvo (Posts: 72; Member since: 10 May 2012)
It's the same situation as Google+ and Facebook. Google+ came to the game late and is just consistently playing catch up with Facebook. We could use Google+ if we wanted to, but Facebook is a more mature social network with a better user experience (arguably). But the main difference is that we have the option to use Google+ or Facebook. Apple is deciding for all its customers that they have to use their own maps, therefore proving the dictatorship-like relationship between Apple and its customers. But who knows, maybe Google will place its maps in the App store; possibly for free? Then we can watch as people download the more mature Google maps software to replace
52. jroc74 (Posts: 3621; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
I dont know about Google + vs. Facebook and Facbook being the better user experience.
I think Facebook had an update to address Google+'s Circles feature. It was probably already there on Facebook but was kinda hidden or not well known.
What Facebook also must remember is what made it great is it was alot cleaner than Myspace. Facebook is getting a lil cluttered, bloated IMO.
At some point...like with OS's....more doesnt neccesarily mean better.
19. remixfa (Posts: 13901; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
this is beta, so give it some time.
but, anyone else notice just how closely APPLE COPIED GOOGLE on the way things look on the map?? they are MIRROR images. The pin is almost exactly the same, the way the blue line looks, the way it pops up with information.. all exact replicas.
Seriously, WTF. Where is the resident fanboys to explain how its OK that apple is copying google.
20. PapaSmurf (Posts: 5797; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Taco or Gallito will eventually come to say that they're: different when in reality they are exactly the same.
Apple makes me want to cry on how it runs its business.
22. andro. (Posts: 1926; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
Most of taco and gallitokings arguments from the last year or so for defending apple and attacking android have been completely blown out of the water in recent days with these maps, ios 6 etc. They have remained very quiet, perhaps they have gained a little bit of respect back by remaining quiet apon realising the truth rather than launching continual comments here and keep ifan trolling!
46. gallitoking (Posts: 4623; Member since: 17 May 2011)
the reason I am quiet is that I hear the same excuses from fandroids every day... when you guys come up with some new. and not recycle old material... then I will express my opinion.. but not to a troll like you...I only answer once to you.. and this was it
24. Quezdagreat (Posts: 378; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
ARE YOU REALLY THAT STUPID? why would they look different when they are images of the same location. And before google purchased android, apple was already using google map you idiot
26. SlimSoulja86 (Posts: 640; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
He is not talking about satellite images, look at the at pictures and how they "route" you, even the pointers to giv u an alternative route, they look d same, even the blue colors and the shades. Just saying, lets just b honest here, some someone copied someone. And i dont think u can separate google frm android, just as you cannot separate Apple and iOS. Like i said, just syin.
My bad, i forgot to us iFans, Apple doesnt copy someone, they had it long time ago. And one more thing (myb im saying this cos my iphone 4 is left behind) but how is iOS the most advanced mobile os when it cant do simple things other OS' can do, like bluetooth file transfer, usb hosts, widgets and so on just to name d few, yet it is ADVANCED! LOL
30. Quezdagreat (Posts: 378; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
if you were smart you would see that both maps are from iphones. and blue is a common color to show your route
29. remixfa (Posts: 13901; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
u should really learn to read before asking if someone else is stupid.. for real.
apple is no longer using google maps. and apple wasnt "using" anything. Google maps was an app just like any other map, it just came with the phone. That is Android's google maps on the left, and Apple's iOS maps on the right. all the icons and the way it works look exactly the same. And yes the maps themselves look similar as well.. minus 80% of the detail on the apple side.
copy copy.. look who's copying.
35. Quezdagreat (Posts: 378; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
so you are telling me the picture that says San Francisco,Ca are not both from Iphones. Tell me when did android start using pins on their maps?
38. protozeloz (Posts: 5284; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
actually both are iPhone, I can tell One was made by Google and one by apple but both are for iPhone
40. Quezdagreat (Posts: 378; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
thank you but this idiot cant but he has a android phone
63. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Apple wrote the maps app on iOS from scratch. Google has always provided just the data.
70. remixfa (Posts: 13901; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
yea, looks like they took a shortcut and used all of google map's color pallets and icon sets too. Everything about that screams "rip off" its not funny. Its amazing that MS made Bing look different, yet Apple makes it look identical.. hmmm..
25. SlimSoulja86 (Posts: 640; Member since: 03 Nov 2011)
To be honest, i also realised that. Even with the "routes"
32. good2great (Posts: 1020; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
well to be honest this google's version is iOS Maps... so why wouldn't they use the same icons, images, and functions in their own Maps?
but i do understand where you are coming from.
and like a someone mentioned earlier the apple version of maps was first right?
39. Ivan6479 (Posts: 243; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
Actually if I'm not mistaken I believe the whole pin thing may have been implemented by Apple, which explains why it isn't available to us on Android. I do agree though they are definitely biting off of Google Maps otherwise and poorly doing so. Yeah this maps is in beta and I get that, but they also acquired most of this mapping technology from another entity, when they bought them out, so you think they could do better then this. Oh well too bad for them, looks like Apple screwed up big time as they did with the rest of their lame so called new iOS.
41. cncrim (Posts: 375; Member since: 15 Aug 2011)
I tried ios 6 beta yesterday, not much news and apple got alot catch up to do maps department.
62. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Obviously Google is ahead when it comes to maps. They have one of the best solutions and have spent a lot of money and time building it up. It will take some time for Apple to catch up in this area. You can't expect a brand new product to come out and match or better every feature.
67. hiBreed (Posts: 90; Member since: 29 May 2012)
don't y'all get it? This is true innovation, wait till u see the new UI. :D
71. scotty0717 (Posts: 9; Member since: 11 Aug 2011)
No comparison...Apple competing against Google maps? That's like blackberry making a comeback....way to late in the game.
72. HiddenStones (Posts: 5; Member since: 03 Aug 2012)
I am curious on how much time difference on route 3 in the 5th image...
