Apple's brand is not destroying the world

0. phoneArena 12 Mar 2012, 09:39 posted on

Last week, we questioned if those who were out to criticize Apple were judging the company by an old standard, namely the standard set by Steve Jobs. The company is no longer run by Steve, so while the products...

Haha... yeah, you all have seen how bad it gets when someone sets off my politics button... I am trying to resist such urges, but when others open up a conversation like that, sometimes I can't help myself.

I don't like it when I allow myself to get dragged into a political discussion here... we are here to talk mobile, not politics... and then again, some of it crosses into political territory these days, so it can be hard to avoid.

Best way to avoid problems is to be respectful and not call out other political affiliations for being "bad" or whatever. You may feel tempted, but don't do it! Just don't!

iTotally agree. On a personal note, iDidn't read the entire article above; iRead the first two sentences and realized it was a repeat of what iPhoneandiPadArena wrote last week and quite honestly life is too short. If I wanted to waste my precious time re-reading the sAme ole krApple content, I could use the time more efficiently by playing "Snow Angels" on the tracks of the NYC subway in a VERY dark tunnel.

Michael has been writing very 'Let love apple' articles recently. Not that i would have considered him an apple hater previously just a person with an non ifanatic view on apple which is rare for phone journalists especially on PA which posted about 80 articles of the exact same info on the new ipad.

But the recent 'Lets love Apple' ' 'apple is good' is eerily like when in the Simpsons when Homer gets turned to love the Movementarians and declares his undying love for the 'Leader' !!!

I'm not advocating liking Apple. I'm advocating that people lean back and let others like what they want. Yelling at people in comment threads, and coming up with crazy theories about how Apple is going to destroy everything we love are absurd reactions. There are a lot of people that enjoy Apple products, so let them enjoy it. They aren't wrong, they just have a different opinion.

I know this is a silly argument to try to make to the diehard Apple haters. But, I feel I have to try to bring a little rationality to our volatile tech community.

Apple is not taking over the world, but the mentality & mindset that they are forcing down on people is. For instance your colleague Victor H. had a funny article called "Here's how Apple squeezed over 3 million pixels in the new iPad screen". The mentality & stigma is that Apple makes everything, they are revolutionary.

That couldn't be farther from the truth. We all know Sharp made those displays but we have the media feeding bogus information to the public thus keeping that Apple makes everything or is revolutionary. So Apple indeed is manipulating the media & that is how you begin to destroy world. It starts with propaganda & then it leads to something else.

I am playing with those types of words because that is what is being implied in the title of this article. Thus fueling for gas for Apple’s fire. Apple is indeed manipulating the media because we have people in this very website who are giving wrong information about Apple's so called inventions or whatever you want to call it. Apple has done nothing but buy the display, but the media gives Apple the credit as they made it or invented it.

So false information can lead to different things maybe not the destruction of the world but to make Apple fans more extreme than they already are.

You definitely have a valid point on the misinformation. I called victor out on that as well. Apple didnt do squat other than order the product that was available to them. They are a software and advertising agency with some design thrown in. they definitely do not actually make a darn thing, especially technology.

I know & that is what I mean. The media has a lot to do with the misinformation. They can report whatever they want & the public will wash it down like a fine wine after a $85.00 filet Mignon.

Apple also never gives anyone credit for their so called inventions. Nuance is not even aloud to talk about Siri, I bet Sharp can't say here is what we did to the new iPad screens, & the list keeps going on.

The media on the other hand paints this picture that Apple makes everything from scratch & that could not be farther from the truth.

I once told a friend of mine who works for apple that the iphone 4 screen was made by LG and not apple, funny enough he looked shocked and didnt believe it till he googled it.

You are right they ALL do, but the media says that Apple invents the tech or Apple claims it's something revolutionary that they did. That is the fundamental difference. Apple says they did something revolutionary, the media & the iFans say it was invented by Apple. STILL to this day there are people out there who think the iPhone 4 is 4G, that they invented Siri, & the touch screen. All this misinformation that clearly the media has to do with.

You get some media outlets that are not qualified to report on tech but still do thus smearing the facts to unsuspecting people who believe anything and everything.

I guess I just don't understand why it should be that annoying. Why would you ever have to read any more of those articles than just the headlines? You should have the option to click through on your news feed, so if you don't care about the info, why would anyone click through? This has always confused me about fanboys/haters. If news about Apple/Android is going to just piss you off/confirm your bias, why read it?

But that still begs the question, if you aren't the one buying the Apple device, what does it matter to you? Let other people learn on their own if they prefer Apple or Android. Your job is to explain the difference and let the consumer choose. If they choose Apple, it doesn't affect you, it's their choice. If it turns out badly, theoretically they learn and don't make it again. That's life.

Unfortunately, I have to side with galito on some of your concerns. You have my support on being against Apple's "bloodthirsty legal motives" although as I pointed out last time, we have to see if those motives continue past the current batch of lawsuits.

However, all of your other concerns ring hollow to me. If you don't like Apple products and practices regarding the sale and use of those products, don't buy them. If you follow that rule, it doesn't matter what Apple releases, because it doesn't affect you.

i think the problem is that apple does all these underhanded things and never gets called on them, except from all of us "crazy ihaters". If it wasnt for people constantly reminding others of Apple's constant atrocities from minor things like false shortages and gouging people for a warranty that is legally required anyways.. to their abysmal and slave like conditions at their manufacturing partner's factories, people would be happy to shove it under a rug and forget about it. Its bad enough that Apple constantly gets credit for "inventing" or "revolutionizing" when they do neither. Apple is no different than HTC. They make software in house and over lay it on hardware that others develop. Yet we never hear how HTC "invented" the crapdragon chip or anything of the sort.

I get all sorts of crap from Gallito and other notorious iNuts about my stand against Foxconn. Yet those nuts dont realize that its not just about apple, its about an industry, one that I am heavily invested in as a consumer, so even if i dont like apple, it still affects me. You go after the head of the snake.. and that head, profit wise, is Apple.

So in short, yea even if you dont buy an apple product, what they do can affect you.

Ok call me an Apple hater but I certainly don't hate any other OS out there, my profile is a proof of it.

My last comment was not against Phone Arena or you, but was a genuine frustration. You subscribe to a blog/news feed to read all sort of articles not just one particular product/brand. If I want to read just about Apple/Android/WP I'd subscribe to their particular blogs, but even on a major player like PA you look at the Home Page and there's 75% Apple related news.

I reckon the biggest success of Apple is not its technology or design or products but the hype it creates when launching every year, cuz just every blog out there jumps on its band wagon.

If you look at PA's homepage in the wake of the iPad announcement, of course you'll see 75% Apple related news. However, if you take a look right this minute, on a relatively normal news day, the skew is more towards Android than anything else.

There are sites that claim to cover everything, but skew towards Apple (like BGR), but I think we do a fine job here at keeping it balanced (when possible). Obviously there will be a skew towards Android during things like CES and MWC (which I don't remember anyone mentioning), and there will be a skew towards Apple when it makes an announcement (which I ALWAYS have to hear about.)

We're fair around here. I just ask the same from the readers (although I know better than to expect it.)

Awesome article, Michael. You truly have calmed me down.

However the main problem I see is the fact that the world today is meant to work with PCs. Not mobile devices. People use Disk-on-keys, plug in their digital cameras, download and install programs from the web (and not from an app store), connect the PC easily (read: via an HDMI\VGA cable) to an HDTV\projector\second monitor, download and use files from the web, upload files to the web, etc etc etc.

All these things require either a PC, OR an Android device (a very well equipped Android device, but still). And here's the thing. Google built Android undestanding the needs of the people - the needs I described above. Google built Android to exist in a PC world. Not in a post-PC world. We ARE NOT in a post-PC world yet. We live in the present - and not in the future. And thus - Android - unlike iOS - can do all the above-mentioned things - while iOS cannot.

You say that the difference between iOS and Android in terms of capability is only 2%? But how can that be when I already described a few dozen very common activities which only PCs and Android devices can do??

In order for iOS - and even Android - to take the leading spot in computing hardware - the world must change from a PC world as it is today - to a post-PC world as has been described several times by numerous people in the industry.

We can't afford ourselves to use primarily post PC deivces in a PC world. And if we can - at least make those devices run Android.

The world has been meant to work with PCs, but that is quickly changing with the growth of the cloud.

Besides, everything that you mentioned is available on the iPad as well, although you need adapters. Those who need the use of usb keys or HDMI/VGA connectivity, or digital cameras with their iPads can do that if they want.

You may prefer Android for its built-in versatility (as I do), but most people probably don't need those functions, so they aren't built-in to an iPad. But, just because the port isn't standard doesn't mean the functionality isn't there.
