You didn't think Apple isn't going to patent Siri, did you? Well, it is! Cupertino's most popular company has submitted a new patent application, titled "Intelligent Automated Assistant", trying to keep the awesomeness of Siri and similar products all to itself...

A review by the Huffington post clearly shows that Google Now is more reposnive, natural and faster as compared to any of Apple's 'voice assistants'

But I think Google Now is different that Siri, Google Now, searches the web, and gives you cards.
Siri, tries to be real human-like 'secretary', that answers questions, not only search the web !

actually,there are many ways in which a voice recognition software can be used to access the web and the other stuff mentioned in the article, which means that apple is only patenting the way siri has been programmed to access and provide those features......you can get the same features on any other voice assistant that is programmed in a different way, i think google now is programmed in a different way...

does this need aproval? not only seeing its competitor crush them on the game on nearly every aspect and yet they try to patent the idea? I would go to the patent office and show them all the other stuff that already existed.... or patent location based asistance and sugestions or automated location settings...

That is the whole idea behind crowd-sourcing the application examination/review process. I suspect this Siri application is going to be held up for quite some time. Apple might even withdraw/abandon the application.

Looks like Apple sees its future as following the same path as Kodak . Kodak may have lead film /camera industry for a while but failed to innovate and now rely on patents as a source of income.
Apple has had it's day and is heading down the same path and it seems they are trying to patent anything and everything they can.

Dunno, I've seen them start to pattent a few things, which in the past they were very adamant against doing. They wanted this open source, open world thing and saw no need to pattent anything. Now they are scrambling to figure things out because their competition pattents everything and leaves them with no leg to stand on.

Yeah, except Apple didn't f**king develop Siri at all. They bought it, integrated it, f**ked it up a little, then started selling it. Google Now, on the other hand, is said to have been in development for three years. If Google can produce documentation showing they had Now in development prior to Apple's acquisition of Nuance, they can probably have the patent declared invalid when Apple brings it to bear against them.

It may not get to a patent issuing. There is a new sheriff over at the USPTO - crowd-sourced invalidity challenges. If the crowd can show valid examples of invalidity, the patent doesn't issue.

Google Voice is what.. 3 years old? It did everything Siri did years before it came out, it just didnt accept multiple commands for the same thing.
Vlingo and others have been around since RIM was popular. There is way too much prior work for Apple to have a real leg to stand on in court.

At this point, it is just an application. If the application gets crowd-sourced for invalidity, I doubt the application issues as a patent for all of the reasons (and probably others as well) that you mention. Voice-assistance is just too far along the development curve.

The wording is so vague, Apple is setting up future lAwsuiTs.
Personally, I tried using SiRi on my old teeny-tiny iPhone 4S, I wouldn't refer to her as "the system" or an "embodiment" because it implies something more technicallt advanced. SiRi is only capable of simple answers, unlike those commercials with John Malkovich that show her as a fully intelligent interactive "system". The only reality of those commercials is the pathetic loneliNess of the end-user.

Sorry but this should never be approved. Their are too many "like" systems out their already. Android had Voice Control long before Siri existed. Hell, every navigation system out their has voice control with natural language communication. Sorry Apple, you didn't invent any of it, and you can't have it as your own. The world doesn't revolve around you.

I seriously hope google has applied for a patent for their virtual assistant which has been out long before siri. As much as google dislikes patent wars, apple has shown since they can no longer out innovate google or any other company, they will simply sue them out of business. I'm sorry, and I'll admit I'm no patent attorney, just thinking logically, but shouldn't an application for a patent describe HOW you're accomplishing an idea, rather than just say "this is what I want to do." If that's the case then every single one of us should storm the patent office and file for every single conceivable idea, much like people used to (and probably still) try to claim domain names with similar or misspelled names of businesses they then try to sell back to the companies.
