Apple to ditch Intel in Macs for its own processors, like the ones used in the iPad and iPhone
0. phoneArena 05 Nov 2012, 15:31 posted on
The goal might be to have uniform chip technologies across all Apple products, fine-tuned for its own software, and, with time, we could very well see a convergence among Apple's desktop, laptop, tablet and phone experience...

Good for Intel..!!
And get ready for the overheating, slow speed, chips issues in Macbooks now.

ARM is MUUUUUCH power efficient than x86
hate apple but love arm design

For a mobile OS, sure, but mobile =/= desktop. In a few years, perhaps they may offer some equivalence, but it's still going to be somewhat limited without the software and OS to match. ios isn't it, so apple sure as heck better have something on the level of Windows8/Windows Phone8 if it plans on executing such a plan.
Not only that, they have to have someone make these processors, and unless they're planning on making a multi-billion dollar investment in TSMC and magically build them new foundries and factories, that's not going to happen; they'll still be under the thumb of Samsung and such

Trust me, they know what they are doing.
Their swift seems to be amazingly power efficient, and with further development, I can see a Macbook version with say 2.5 gHz and six-eight cores, coupled with top of the line "Rogue" GPU's - that would probably put ivy bridge to shame.

dude arm rocks, a6 is great cpu with better than cortex a9 ram controller
apple has money to make cpu much faster than risc/arm from ps3!
and if they throw money at samsung, why not
someone has to build them
samsung will take not more than 50-100 bucks a piece and intel would take like 5-10 times that
go back to your beloved microsoft and don't throw garbage at good articles

x86 is power.
ARM is mobility.
In terms of power, current ARM is only between Pentium 4 and Intel Core.

yep my 1 year sony laptop with i5 has 5000 in geekbench
my note 2 overclocked to 1,8 and undervolt has 2400
it is only about two times slower !!!
and btw internet explorer is so slow that it is as fast as stock browser on note2
25. Astri (Posts: 3; Member since: 23 Sep 2012)
is not even close to Core. Single thread performance of Core is like 10 times better. Run a pi on both core and ARM to see the difference
26. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
you are so fanboy of intel
it depends, there are tests in geekbench that 1 core exynos is faster than 1 my i5 core, there are not many of those but they are here
and one test of browser (fountain of pixels or something) was 2vs3fps on note2
27. p0rkguy (Posts: 684; Member since: 23 Nov 2010)
So you ran two different benchmarks dedicated for two different devices and can easily say they're in the same... Interesting.
29. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
what 2 different benchmarks?
what are you talking about?
ok ok i get it. intel is faster because takes more power. happy? intel is super fast. happy fanboy now?
47. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
There, that's what I'm saying.
On the same clock speed A15 is actually close to core i5.
BUT it is MUCH more efficient.
A15 is up to twice times more efficient than Intel Atom, yet absolutely blowing it in performance !
Now translate that into the comparison with ivy bridge and you will see what Apple is doing here.. say their MacBook on ARM swift will have six cores running at 2.5ghz.
a) it is at least as powerful as quad core i5, yet still significantly more power efficient
b) it is significantly more powerful than a dual core i5, yet not more power hungry
Apple wins in any case

Have you seen the Pi score of snapdragon Krait pro?
It's like 10x better than the ARM A9 chips.
So by that logic Krait is ten times better than arm A9 which we all know is not true.
You should do your homework better.
31. aaronkatrini (Posts: 239; Member since: 06 Jun 2012)
thumbs up for you! but still even the best ARM cannot compete in processing power with at least an i5 processor, lets not talk about Xeon line...
Any way if arm goes this way im pretty sure in a couple of years it would surpass intel , and thats why Apple is going for that. You have to admit , Apple is thinking smart now :/
44. jove39 (Posts: 1320; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
only untill ARM is less powerful...once they reach power point of x86...or x64...ARM chips will generate same kind of heat...don't believe me...read Nexus 4 performance preview on Anandtech...4core krait chip get throttled due to thermal issues...and Nexus 4 scored less than onex(s4) in few benchmarks!!!
GO read it now -http://www.anandtech.com/show/
49. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
because s4 pro was for tablets
even almost the same cpu on note2 is better than on sgs3
rev 2 and faster ram 30%, internal bus 10%
and voltages can be lower even 100mv
but on the other hand i don't really believe in snapdragons, in that article is also about a15
we will see what sgs4 can do with samsung optimizations, or we wait for texas instruments version, it is only the begining, 5 months and we will see what can it do
BTW i love anandtech and i read it often

I don't get it . They went from their old chips to intel and now back to their own chip again ?
So this new chip can't ran windows ? s**t , can't dual boot anymore !
48. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
you can instal windows rt (for arm)
50. thelegend6657 (unregistered)
No , RT is closed source you cant buy them in stores like Windows 8 . similar to android it must come with your device .
Seriously ? RT is s**t
51. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
rt is s**t
but i hoped they will hack it

Don't like Apple but I will take my hat off to them if they can do it.
Currently ARM chips are RISC based and not suitable for PCs and what Apple can do is essentially tweaking ARM design for their own mobiles which is easy task that many companies also can do.
But designing chips for PCs requires much more and even ARM still can't so it's obviously is very long shot.
17. PhenomFaz (Posts: 1098; Member since: 26 Sep 2012)
Apple is full of crap...period!
Just because Apple dedicates a lot of resources in its homebrew processors doesn't mean it has to shove them down the poor Apple fan's throats and I bet they'' still charge like $2500 for this crap as well....I see another Apple-Map like apology in Apple's future (and probably someone losing their job!)
ARM based chips are nowhere near Intel's architecture and especially for full-blown PCs! It'll be quite some years before they can actually make it desktop-worth and by that time Intel'll have already something much more powerful and power-efficient!
As it as Apple has made enemies out of the entire mobile/tech industry and the only company that supported Apple wholly and was willing to wrok hand-in-hand with Apple was Intel and now Apple goes and stabs them in the back too!
18. jroc74 (Posts: 5192; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Yea, I give it to Apple for trying to have more stuff in house. Apple Maps, this, etc. In the long run it should save them money.
I agree.....for mobile devices ARM is nice. Desktops and laptops, might be a different animal.
35. metalpoet (unregistered)
what a great way for apple to go BACKWARDS with technology....put their own crap inside more of their own icrap!

Oh yeah baby! Come on! Introduce a power house CPU!
2. Non_Sequitur (Posts: 1111; Member since: 16 Mar 2012)
I hope Intel, AMD, Snapdragon, TI, and Samsung amp up their processors.
3. XPERIA-KNIGHT (unregistered)
same old selfish apple never minding what loss other companies will suffer as long as they are gaining......
8. SleepingOz (unregistered)
This is business dude.. And based on their massive profits, they're doing it right.
14. -box- (Posts: 3869; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
The stock market disagrees. They've lost 1/7th their value in a month. Yes, they still bank a lot of profit, but their sales drive has lost its momentum and consumers no longer see them as the go-to brand for consumer electronics.
28. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
yep, only one good os is from microsoft
and the only one thing worse than apple is apple haters
4. Yummy (Posts: 117; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
ha! Lets see how they will perform and how they will affect sales...
5. k4j98 (Posts: 60; Member since: 12 Jul 2012)
Well that might be the biggest mistake Apple could make. Intel treats them well; there is no reason they should leave.
Intel is like the Apple of processors--they charge a lot but put out a quality product.
7. letgomyeggroll (Posts: 137; Member since: 13 Jun 2012)
Their processor, REALLY!!!!! Everyone knows that they don't design or make their processor!!!! Let's see how long that relationship last with whom ever they are dealing with.
Shortly, they gonna want a processor that intel, toshiba, or IBM makes in the near future. Or try to sue them for the processor preform the same or shape the same.
9. Captain_Doug (Posts: 785; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
Way to increase that profit margin for sure...
11. Ninetysix (Posts: 1669; Member since: 08 Oct 2012)
Hmm..this will prevent future hackintosh builds :(
12. lauremar (Posts: 181; Member since: 29 Feb 2012)
If this turns out to be another wrong move just like what they did to the maps app, it's the end of Apple as we know it.
15. cncrim (Posts: 534; Member since: 15 Aug 2011)
Of course, once you have all that cash you can effort to make whatever product you want. No surprise there.
24. letgomyeggroll (Posts: 137; Member since: 13 Jun 2012)
They made the cash from their vendors engineering and make the products for Apple. They have been abusing their relationship with the vendors and all surrounding. Their profit margin will get smaller and smaller as they burn their bridges with everyone.
32. rusticguy (Posts: 2828; Member since: 11 Aug 2012)
Looks like now Apple is planning to copy Samsung business model soon :D
33. DaNTRoN (Posts: 135; Member since: 23 Jul 2012)
What about devs? Would, say for example, Blizzard needs to write new code for diablo to work on new chips?
34. InspectorGadget80 (Posts: 6700; Member since: 26 Mar 2011)
Just like Apple wants to create their own oroducts but still don't realize they have to pay someone else to make their chips. I never have problems with Intel for my PC's. Shows u they don't want to share their PROFITS WITH ANYONE. plus who wants to spend over 1,200$ on a MAC?
36. johnyivysux (Posts: 3; Member since: 05 Nov 2012)
nothing new here...
Apple is just mimicking Google (Chrome Book), and MS (W8RT)... i.e stealing innovation.... again......
37. bossmt_2 (Posts: 437; Member since: 13 Oct 2009)
This is realllllly stupid. A healthy portion of MacBook and iMac sales are to people in Music and Video production. They need multitasking and high processing. If they go through with this it could be disasterous. If Mac Hardware can't handle real editting a video they will move to PC or Linux, or somewhere else.
Now I can see them making lower cost Macs with their own processors, but I don't think it woudl be wise to go through with this.
39. kemjus (Posts: 32; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
So apple will be putting iOS on mac? Awesome! Maybe they will replace their keyboard with a clickwheel like on the iPod classic!
sarcasm (before isheep go crazy)
In all honesty by 2017 anything could happen, good to see apple being innovative
40. viper1983 (Posts: 31; Member since: 03 Aug 2012)
I love the criticism of apple on here. No product has been announced yet it is already "apple maps". This is being accused of copying google, and yet it is also being said that it is a step backwards. Which is it, people?
42. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
i dont get it... even though they want to be unified...but really ARM chips?! how can x86 apps run to that?
the only problem about intel chips is the overheating... but actually AMD is just close second..but it dont heat that much!
the question is how will apple do this?! with ARM chips? ARM is good for low power phones but not for loptops!
45. xfire99 (Posts: 566; Member since: 14 Mar 2012)
Lets hopes Apple do it and go their own way. Dithing all others manufacturers that are "stealing" theirs profits and make theirs own whatever they want. That way they will earn a bigger margins profits on each Mac, iDevices they sale and all theirs stock sharers will be happy.
Let theirs own nonchalant and arrogant digg its own grave. All theirs succes have gone to theirs head and think they really dont need others involvement.
Intel wont suffer from this loss, theirs cpu architecture are years ahead from theirs competitors and let Apple replace it with ARMs.
Theirs Apple fans wont notice any different anyway, as long it have a Apple logo on it and buy whatever Apple throw out.
Either it gonna be a new revolutionary innovative design of a new cpu architecture and call it iRetina CPUs Inside.
Or its gonna be a Microsoft deja vu.
Mine bets lays on later one.
