Apple can apply for patents but when other companies show document of invention long before they did, and they will it wont go any where.

Microsoft and Apple have cross patent licensing agreement, Microsoft & Apple does own some degree of touch/pinch to zoom.

they recently got awarded the patent for a very specific style of pinch to zoom. the devil is in the details of the implementation. they dont own "all" pinch to zoom.

actually LG feature phones had the pull down notification area, just that it really wasnt for notifications (more for network stats, bluetooth and etc, so i'd think Google just improved it).. so that was even before Android.. but i mean not like Apple cares right? they "invented'' it
