Apple says Samsung set a patent timebomb when the 3G standard was created to demand "excessive" royalties
0. phoneArena posted on 26 Sep 2011, 09:27
Samsung is suing to stop the sales and marketing of Apple's gizmos, including the iPhone 5, in the Netherlands, but Apple argues it has sneaked in some of its own IP in the 3G standard, so it can patent it later and sue...

well apple started suing samsung...they had no choice but to sue back what did you expect them to just sit back..samsung themselves said they did not want things to get this far as they were hoping to keep its relationship with apple...
73. Burnab87 (unregistered) posted on 26 Sep 2011, 13:49 8 1
you three knuckleheads are pretty slow i see. No one said that there was no one else sueing, But Apple is the Only Company doing it on such a grand scale they're trying to completely take out samsung and its successful product lines because they are Successful period. No one else who is sueing is trying to block sales and if they tried that then both company's were able to sit down and work out a deal where both were happy. But no not Apple they are trying to end Samsungs plans in android all together, only because its a real threat to iPhone market shares.

yes apple not the 1st company to sue but up until now apple started with the whole banning products and taking choices away from consumers...even microsoft are happy to license and not ban and that is saying something...lol funny seeing apple complaining these are standard patents yet the drawing of a rectangle with a screen for a tablet is really unique and not standard....
121. gallitoking posted on 26 Sep 2011, 16:42 1 3
u seem smart person... if you invent something.. but didnt patented.. and someone else does.. well it will be awarded to whomever patented here in the US, paper talks... if Apple did patented as crazy as it might be.. it got approved and now can enjoy that feeling on patenting things... I know you wont see the point because is Apple. but thats how things are in this country... still dont understand... rent the movie.. The Social Network
141. taz89 posted on 26 Sep 2011, 18:08 5 0
the reason why people never patented such broad ideas and designs was that they were standards and is the best design...ie no one patented the shape of a tv cause that shape was a standard...no one patented 4 wheels on a car because its a standard...and no one patented a tablet until apple because a tablet being a rectangle is a standard...someting that are standard should not be allowed to be patented such as a rectangle for a tablet or a phone....it just shows what type of company apple is and they make microsoft look like saints...
149. gallitoking posted on 26 Sep 2011, 19:06 0 2
look a the Motorola Droid the OG or most motorola phones... look nothing like an iphone... same shape.. touchscreen..some people like the shape of the droid but some dont.. but is different from the iphone.. I dont know about MS being saints.. more like Smithers.. from the simpsons..lol

im not saying you cant make different designs (those moto droid phones are ugly and fat) but what apple is saying is that no one should be able to make a clean looking and streamlined phone or tablet...thats what both apple and samsung are doing making streamlined products...considering microsoft not trying to ban anyone and apple is,i would say microsoft is more of a saint than apple...lol have not seen simspon since i was a kid.

Sneaked IP in when the standard was created???? Well that seems to be an issue of whom ever created the standard and allowed IP in without some sort of licensing arrangement before hand. If true pretty low. I would think if a standard has IP, there would be a set licensing fee attached to it at time of standardization... but what do I know.
The fact that samsung seems to only be leveraging the 3g patents on Apple, is telling... They are pretty much saying... want to sue/ban us for having a rectangular black bordered tablet (which is standard for any type of screen, theaters, TVs etc, actually Black borders are proven to improve image quality) then we will sue for some other technicality...
While petty (on both parties) wtf do you expect... I am sick of EVERYONE and every COMPANY playing the "I don't deserve this" card when they KNOW they asked for it.
While I do support Apple on the touchwiz/phone complaints have merrit (though its really in the grey area, the app launcher has similar icons etc)... I think the tablet complaints are just crap.

25. Whateverman posted on 26 Sep 2011, 11:52 1 1
Wow, good move Samsung! But I'm gonna help Apple out of this one. Apple, what you should do is take the same approach you did with Flash and HTML 5. Take that stance that 3G connectivity is obsolete and that you will be moving forward and supporting LTE instead. That way, you can take credit for moving LTE forward while avoiding paying Samsung for the IP's that they have "every right to defend". (I think that was the phrase often repeated about Apple banning Samsung products). Then you can file a patent on LTE and force Samsung, Motorola, HTC and LG to pay YOU excessive royalties, or be banned worldwide.

May I ask, how many jobs apple has created for the American people being the most profitable company in the US?
65. taco50 (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2011, 13:35 0 4
They're now in the works of building a 12,000 employee campus in Cupertino. They also have retail stores and call centers all over the US. So my guess would be at least around 20,000 jobs. How many does Samsung create in the US?
76. Daniel2324 posted on 26 Sep 2011, 14:03 4 0
wow... thats only 2 percent of 1 million people they employ in foxconn.
as for your question in how many people does samsung employ in the US, well I have no idea, but im certain that they employ over a 100 thousand in korea.
83. taco50 (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2011, 14:27 3 3
Apple employees 1 million at foxconn? You sure about that? You do realize foxconn isn't owned by Apple so not all their jobs are Apple related. Apple subcontracts to them.

Here you go bud:
Foxconn makes consumer electronics for a number of well-known companies, including:
Apple Inc. (United States)[16]
Acer Inc. (Taiwan)
Amazon.com (United States)[17]
Asus (Taiwan)
ASRock (Taiwan)
Intel (United States)
Cisco (United States)
Hewlett-Packard (United States)[18]
Dell (United States)
Nintendo (Japan)
Nokia (Finland)[16]
Microsoft (United States)
MSI (Taiwan)
Motorola (United States)
Sony Ericsson (Japan/Sweden)[19]
Vizio (United States)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn
Hey sniggly where are you?!! Foxconn makes Motorola products too! Are you still outraged at how workers are treated there? Remix?
160. remixfa posted on 26 Sep 2011, 19:36 3 0
The only one I use on that list right now is.. umm.. Dell. That was the last product i purchased on that list, was this dell computer im typing on. If it was made at foxconn, i dont know for sure.
Now, Foxconn is a s**t company by any moral standard. I doubt they treat any of their workers all that well. But when was the last time you heard of mass suicides at the nokia or nintendo plant? Why is it only Apple plants that explode and have saftey nets for jumpers??
That is the difference.
165. taco50 (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2011, 20:23 0 3
Well considering Apple doesn't run or own the plants you're assuming that other workers for some reason have better working conditions the Apple's even though they are all part of the same company. Also in reading up on this Apple did their own investigations after the suicides and now does inspections to make sure they have good working conditions.
I'm sure to you that's not good enough.
171. Whateverman posted on 26 Sep 2011, 21:40 1 0
Taco- At last count, it was about 13,000 here in the US and 48,000 worldwide. Gotta give them credit for keeping the engineers and programmers employees, but it would be nice to see some of those manufacturing jobs here. Maybe help the middle class out a little, but all the corporate welfare and tax loopholes here, I can't see any company building anything here in the next few years to come.
173. Whateverman posted on 26 Sep 2011, 21:44 2 0
And those numbers don't include Foxconn employees. But what's really embarrassing is that Samsung employs more Americans than Apple.
176. taco50 (banned) posted on 26 Sep 2011, 22:44 0 2
Can you show some proof Samsung employees more Americans than Apple? Considering Apple is building a 12,000 person campus which doesn't include retail or call centers they employee a lot more than 13,000 or will be soon anyway. I pulled up a recent study that showed Apple employeed 14,000 just for their iPod business.
185. Whateverman posted on 27 Sep 2011, 01:31 2 0
Dude, I'm using what looks to be the same not-so-reliable source it appears you are using, Wikipedia. I just read that 14,000 jobs were PRODUCED because of the iPod as of 2006. Now, when I quoted a source from 2007, you said it was too old. Now you're using sources even older then mine? (That called a Double Standard) But that was when they were making iPods here. Where do you thing they make them now??? Hint: All of those nice manufacturing jobs were moved to a tiny little country with a LOT of people. Probably why is says since 2006 and not 2011.
As for the Samsung head count, I found it at glassdoor.com a few weeks ago. All of Samsung's companies are listed separately, so I will not be going through them for you. But fee free to take a look for yourself. They have offices and factories in
Dallas, TX
Austin, TX
Plano, TX
Ridgefield Park, NJ
Bridgewater, NJ
Fairfax, VA
San Jose, CA
Irvine, CA
And a bunch more, so you'll have to go through them all one-by-one. But wouldn't it be worth it to prove me wrong for once?
Oh BTW, the offer for the free iPhone 5 is still on the table if you can prove that I said what you claim I said about pirating software. Times a-wastin', you only have 361 days left to find your proof and claim your brand new shinny!
186. taco50 (banned) posted on 27 Sep 2011, 02:20 1 0

@ taco50. Banning products isn't the answer for Samsung or Apple. Getting any company's products banned for the ridiculous reasons Apple gave was just plain silly. And although I understand why Samsung made this move, I would hope this is merely a move to get Apple to drop their lawsuit. I don't want to see Apples products any less then seeing Samsung's banned.
