Apple renames latest iPad due to international complaints over 4G branding

0. phoneArena posted on 13 May 2012, 11:09

After being told that calling its new iPad 4G or LTE compatible overseas is misleading, Apple is re-branding its LTE enabled tablet as the "iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular in its online store, even in the U.S. and Canada where there is LTE service...

3. shnibz posted on 13 May 2012, 11:41 3

Ha! Thats not a bad name for it Humandroid. Or "future clipboard"

5. HTCFreak posted on 13 May 2012, 12:19 6

Well in that case, we can also call the Samsung Galaxy Tab a SGS XL...

With the success of the Galaxy Note they did name the new flagship tablet the Galaxy Note 10.1... So they agree with you.

2010 wants its joke back.

12. humandroid posted on 13 May 2012, 13:13 1

.....yeah, except it's not a joke now is it? Maybe you can do what no one else has been able to do: explain to me how an ipad is anything other than an ipod XL.
So sorry if I hurt your widdew feeeewings, there there guy, you'll be ok.

iPods don't have cellular connectivity, or a 9.7 in screen, or 9 hr battery life on LTE, or gestures, or the title of the number one selling, and number operating tablet on earth. Oh, and one more thing no other tablets even sell, and without the iPad the tablet segment would be dead. That's two more things.

16. humandroid posted on 13 May 2012, 14:06 3

70% of what you said had nothing to do with my question, now did it? So to summarize:
1. Larger screen (duh, it would have to to be an ipod xl, huh? Derp.)
2. Larger battery (to power the larger screen, derp)
3. Cellular connectivity I'll grant you

So it's an ipod XL with cellular connectivity that most consumers don't use. Wow, you sure schooled me.

iPod's are pocket sized multimedia players. The iPad isn't a pocket sized device. Why does the iPad need to be named iPod? I think the iPad is quite clearly a different product to the iPod, and both are different again in comparison to the iPhone.

19. humandroid posted on 13 May 2012, 15:58 1

Fascinating. Really. You still have yet to explain how it is NOT just a big ipod. No one is debating the size difference, duhdoiy. And as for as your iphone being a different beast, glad you brought that up. iphone=ipod that makes calls.

Really dude what phone do you have a Motorola Samsung or HTC all have *** iPod want to be clones and want to be ipads that don't sale s**t Samsungs hole line up is based on the look of apple so if any one with a samsung phone has a big ass iPhone clone what makes the iPad not a iPod is the apps it runs size price radios screen quality docks and accessories

It's a sad world we live in when things like this have to be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator :(

6. ilia1986 posted on 13 May 2012, 12:25 4

Actually it's a sad world we live in in which a company misleads customers by putting a 4G label on one of it's products when the country in question doesn't even have a 4G network at all.

8. mrochester (unregistered) posted on 13 May 2012, 12:41 3

Personally, I am more than capable of reading the information that Apple supplied on their website that clearly stated that 4G was only compatible in the US and Canada.

If a network can sell me a plan with unlimited texts and a footnote that says 'fair use policy of 3000 texts per month applies' then I see no harm in Apple selling a 4G iPad with a footnote saying it only works on 4G in the US and Canada.

Also, the country in question not having or supporting the required 4G frequencies doesn't make the LTE chip in the iPad suddenly disappear. It's still in there! It's still a 4G device regardless of where in the world it is sold.

"Personally, I am more than capable of reading the information that Apple supplied on their website that clearly stated that 4G was only compatible in the US and Canada"

Then you're doing better than 99% of their user base.

Given Apple users tend to be better educated than their competitors counterparts, I think we're onto a no-hoper altogether,
