Apple releases an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c, still far from affordable

0. phoneArena 18 Mar 2014, 10:23 posted on

Just as we told you the other day, Apple today released an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c. This new variation of the device is competely identical with the 16GB and the 32GB versions of the smartphone, except for the obvious difference in the internal storage space...

More inventory space will be needed to hold these units for the year. Hope the retailers have warehouses large enough to accommodate more of these. I still can't believe that they actually made this thing and iFans actually defended it. After all of that plastic/toy/cheap name calling and then its all "what hate? plastic is totally (unapologetically) fine".

Indeed. To help poor sales of the 5C, they release a less capable and even more overpriced version. Makes perfect sense.

The issue wasn't metal vs plastic, it's metal vs plastic vs cheap crappy plastic. Not all plastics are created equal. The 5c uses a pretty dense plastic, it's very firm and doesn't give, and it isn't prone to smudging or feeling slimy, unlike some other phones out there.

I ordered my mother a 16 GB Moto G and a purple battery door. I think that cost me $220 plus shipping. Camera is not great but it also cost me half the money that an iPhone would have.

What no one has answered yet is, how does this help the 5c models sitting in warehouses? They won't just lower the price on the warehoused models because they don't want to lose money, but they'll shelve them and build a new one with even less desirable specs and try to sell than.

I always thought the 5c was only there to drive people to the higher end 5s, and it apparently did it's job. So maybe now they want to make another model to do the same thing for the 16 & 32GB 5c models? So in a few more months will they come out with a 5c with 4GB so they can try to clear out the 8GB models? Just drop the price of the warehoused models and call it a day.

Apple can the 5c, and put the colors on the new iPhones for 2014. 5c is ok, but too expensive to steer people away from the mighty 5s. Get rid of it, or steeply drop the price. The jedster approves this message.

They never should have released the 5C. The 5 was doing so damn well on it's own and would have continued to sell with Apple.

The 5C was cheaper to manufacture than the 5 was. That's why the 5c exists. 5C will be the "Free" model in 2014, and the 8GB version will be the most likely culprit.

Hmm $500 for an unlocked 8 GB iPhone 5C or $400 for a 32 GB Nexus 5.... I'll have to think about this..... I'll take the iPhone....errrrr.....derp.

iPhone owners are so dumb with how they are willing to pay the prices they do. When we switched to AT&T we had 4 lines. This was in October, we got three Note 3's and one iPhone 5S 16 GB the white aluminum silver one. We got it on special at Best Buy for $99 on contract. Turned around sold it on Craigslist for $650. It took two days to find a buyer at that price. Then we bought a Nexus 5 32GB for $400. So in the end the Nexus 5 was free and we had money in the pocket. Assuming 10% sales tax we ended up about $90 ahead with a free Nexus 5, all preying on the resale value of a tiny little iPhone. I almost wanted to say to the guy I was selling the phone to and say "You do realize paying $650 for this phone is stupid, right?" But that might have ruined my scheme. You know what they say, a fool and his money are soon parted....

It's amazing that this is the level they sink to when they can't sell a product.
"Well it must be the price, its the only thing it could be........What should we do"
So I suppose the correct thing to do is remove storage and bump the price down 50.00
Whatever you say darn rotten fruit.

Apple will never submit to the real reason that phone won't sell. They can't. They're worried way too much about protecting their image and pocketbooks.

Does anyone really think they would build new phones (with 8GB) if they still have 3 million units sitting in a warehouse?

I think the 5C is selling better than expected and cutting into more profitable 5S sales and Apple that is why Apple is playing along with the reports. They don't want to admit that people won't spend more for a finger print scanner.

Everyone keeps saying the 5S is so much better, yet the 5S was criticized on launch for not being enough of an update.

They keep citing the off contract price, yet it is quite common in the US to buy ON contract where the price for the 5C 16 GB model has been much cheaper than the 5S with the sales they have had. I bought the 32 GB model for $99 and the 32 GB 5S can be as high as $299. I couldn't see paying at least $100 more for what amounts to a finger print scanner, a faster processor that most don't care about and a fancy case that I just covered up anyways. I think there are many consumers who feel the same way. I know of 2 others who couldn't see it either and went with the 5C.

By the way, I had a Droid X and then an S3 before moving to the 5C, and while I was happy with the S3, I have zero regrets and am quite happy with the 5C.

Since Apple doesn't report numbers, we'll never know, but you have to ask why they would build more if they can't sell what they supposedly have, and that's why I think the whole thing is fishy.

I should also add that I love the smaller form factor of the 4" screen and my wife (who has the S3 also would like to move to a smaller format.

While I completely agree that Apple needs a big screen contender, I really hope they maintain a 4" model since there is definitely a market for it.

In case anyone is wondering, I switched to this phone (as dumb as it may sound) because the steering wheel controls on my vehicle would not work with an Android phone without crazy hacks I wasn't willing to gamble on. There was an admitted 2-3 days culture shock/adjustment period where I was ready to take it back (and I had 14 days to do so), but after a few days, I really fell in love with the simplicity of the OS. No, it's not for everyone, but it is for me and is a much better experience than anyone might expect after reading opinions on various web sites.

Considering how fads are treated, they have to be careful how they release a bigger screened phone.

The fans once shown a bigger screen will dump 4" stock like never before, and guess who needs to move more of that said stock prior.

They'll (Apple) bulldoze them into the ground in a year our so when the write off happens on them unsold millions, or try and flog them on other countries harder.

Why the heck are they so expensive in the UK? $782 for the 16GB? You can get one on Amazon for $560. So theoretically, the 8GB version should be around $450-470. Still overpriced of course, but not quite ridiculously so like in the UK.

But for that much, I'd rather get a Nexus 5 or a Moto X if I wanted something colorful.
