Apple patents a Smart Case with a secondary display
0. phoneArena posted on 03 Aug 2012, 08:17
If a day comes when the iPad Smart Case gets even smarter, it might look like what is pictured in this Apple patent filing. What's being described is a smaller, secondary display present on the accessory, either occupying some or its entire inner surface...

That's typical Apple, good at making little cool stuffs. such as slide to unlock or disappearing scroll bar.

Apple can buy that flexible screen from their good old mate Samsung
13. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:11 2 1
Samsung would much likely keep its own inventions for itself.
28. andro. posted on 03 Aug 2012, 11:30 1 5
I was gonna say similar, apple will try put a display in a case while Samsung will simply have a hd super amoled unbreakable flexible screen which can be rolled out from a small little coiled up cylinder built into a cover making the fixed apple incase screen look quite dated.

Usually ur comments rock, but that one sucked and made no sense.

Holy cow having the flexible screen as a keyboard smart cover is a great idea. That is a good practal use for that technology. I hope they dont get the patent. For one I think it is to much like Microsofts surface keyboard pluse I don't think it should be alowed because for one that is to broad of a patent. It's obvious that's the way those smart keyboard covers are headed. I can't believe I did not realize it before but apple does make a lot of patent request that are not a spiff idea but are more of a guess in where the technology is headed for a perticular device so they can monopolize the the accessory for lator lawsuits. It's like patenting a rectangular phone that has a big touch panel taking up the whole phone. It's how the technology has to go. It's what the obvious design directions smartphones are going its not an idea.

I can see that the Microsoft Surface has been inspiring
10. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:07 2 2
The Surface was inspired by the iPad and the keyboard cover by the Smart Cover. And the iPad by the Microsoft Pocket PC. There is nothing bad about it - Apple will bring display covers (displays also mean virtual keyboards) and Microsoft covers with hardware keyboards. And we can choose, as long nobody's patents are insulted.
38. 305Bucko posted on 04 Aug 2012, 00:42 2 2
You sir are incorrect. The iPad was inspired by the surface and here is the proof.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v

Note the date 2007, loooong before ipad existed. The fact that Microsoft unveiled this concept in 2007 is indication that it had been in the works for years before the introduction video.

In the current Apple vs Samsung case iPad prototypes from 2004 were revealed. It's no secret the iPad was the Apple version of the Pocket PC, but not the Surface. The Surface is a product that's not even on the market three years after the iPad release.
46. ardent1 posted on 05 Aug 2012, 20:29 0 0
The patent filing for the iPad was in 2004. Last time I checked, 2004 PRECEDED 2007, by about 3 years.
305Bucko, please re-check your facts, especially if you missed by a factor of 3 years.
For the record, MS cane out with the first mainstream PC tablet, but required a stylus. It was expensive, slow, and not surprising, it didn't catch on like the iPad. In fact, more iPads were sold in its first year than all PC tablets to date (i.e. coterminously).
41. djripster posted on 04 Aug 2012, 09:23 1 0
Even Steve Jobs has admitted in the Biography by Walter Isaacson, that the first iPad was inspired by a Microsoft Tablet prototype...
I honestly like Apple products... Its just frustrating that they think they know what people want and wont change unless the competitor comes up with something which can make more money.
Apple would never introduce a physical keyboard with the iPad, knowing very well that not everyone likes typing on glass... Now finally we have a (concept) physical keyboard.
The other item was the iPad mini... They stubbornly stated they will never make a small iPad and laughed at the first Galaxy Tab. Now that the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7 are getting popular. It looks like we may actually see an iPad Mini...
At the end of the day, all that matters is as consumers we get what WE want... Doesnt matter who manufacturers it as long as it gets the job done.

I hate Apple, but the patent application was made August 2011. I'm pretty sure this was before Microsoft revealed their tablet cover keyboard... Might mean Microsoft will be forking out royalties.. :(

Finally Apple shows its innovative side again since Retina display introduction.

Oh that's right. He's not being sarcastic so bash him anyway.
9. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:04 1 8
They redefined the whole mobile OS market (we would talk about the newest Palms, Nokias, Acer Windows 7 tablets and Blackberries now without them).
But cause i know you don't want to talk about it, i will not. In the post above i solely meant the Smart Cover and the newest idea they had about it. Nothing more. I'm not even trolling anymore, just saying my opinion.
11. whysoserious posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:09 4 2
Holy crap! so you weren't being sarcastic after all!?
14. PhoneArenaUser posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:13 7 1
Related to current article, innovative side is where?
17. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:56 2 3
Forget it. There's no point speaking about Apple with Fandroids. And vice versa.
But i will try it another time, cause i kinda like you: an smart tablet cover was a good idea and this further developes the idea.
If you continue bashing, i'll give up talking to you like to normal, neutral people who have more in mind than "ANDROIDGOODAPPLEBAD".

Since you have wrote (comment #4):
"Finally Apple shows its innovative side..."
I'm just asking you, related to current article, where innovative side of Apple? Could you answer me, please?
25. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 10:52 1 3
Ah, Sorry, i forgot.
I find Smart tablet Covers and Covers with screens innovative
26. PhoneArenaUser posted on 03 Aug 2012, 11:02 1 2
You see, the problem is that this article and other sources says that Apple patents a 'Smart Case', but there is no info telling that this 'Smart Case' is innovated by Apple.
And since you have wrote (comment #4):
"Finally Apple shows its innovative side..."
Maybe you could provide source which proves that it is innovated by Apple?
30. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 11:45 2 3
The proof is simple: Apple was the first to patent it. Every company patents it's design and unique innovations.
31. PhoneArenaUser posted on 03 Aug 2012, 11:50 2 1
That does't prove that Apple innovated, maybe Apple just bought the idea and then patented it, right?
33. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 12:44 1 4
You are ridiculous... When Apple patents something it mean it makes an innovation. If Apple brought the patent the news would say "Apple Inc. buys company XYZ's patents."
36. darkkjedii posted on 03 Aug 2012, 17:45 0 0
As they should. I see nothing wrong with that. I remember the guy who came up with 3peat in the 80's but didn't patent it or copyright it. Now think of all the 3peat merchandise, and the money he could've made if he had.
21. AstronautJones posted on 03 Aug 2012, 10:25 2 1
Reminds me of a phone out a couple years ago.?
Wasn't it an LG? The one that had multiple options to plug into the phone. One was a keyboard, one was a game pad, one was a second screen.
37. darkkjedii posted on 03 Aug 2012, 18:20 0 0
Y would some one thumb down ur statement. It was totally unbiased.
15. frydaexiii posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:14 5 1
This isn't being innovative...This is called having an idea, innovating would be if they actually could make this. Everyone can have ideas, how about a holographic phone? Am I innovative for coming up with it? No, the one who can create it is...
32. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 03 Aug 2012, 12:20 1 1
Too bad Apple didn't invent the Retina display. Credit needs to go to the OEM's that create the things possible for Apple to have phones and tablets.
34. jroc74 posted on 03 Aug 2012, 17:31 0 1
Didnt know Apple made the Retina Display or helped develop it.
And last time I checked.....displays on older Win Mo and Android phones had higher screen res than the iPhone 3GS. Would you consider them innovative? If so, than my apologies.
And its funny that screen res higher than the iPhone 4 is overlooked by Apple, iPhone fanboys. But folks wanna talk about the Retina Display like it was some great thing. Especially when alot of fanboys said screen res higher than what was on the 3GS was unnecessary.
I guess it takes Apple to use it to make something necessary.....

How about the Sony's clamp-shell tablets with two displays? They are simply a tablet with hard secondary display - please grant them a patent.
How stupid and obvious should be an idea for Apple to patent it?
12. TheLibertine posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:09 2 3
Most likely, Sony allready patented it. But it was not that much of success.
27. Roomaku posted on 03 Aug 2012, 11:08 0 0
The difference was Sony made it as a niche product that very few people wanted or saw a use for. Remember the Acer iconia tablet? It had a touchscreen with a hinge and was just awful. If Apple implements the idea better they should get praised for the implementation not the orginality of the idea. Knowing Apple they will make this the new normal on tablets, it may not seem right but companies use or improve on other companies ideas all the time.
16. geearede posted on 03 Aug 2012, 09:14 3 3
Someone else creates the technology and apple runs and gets some patent on how to use it.
20. sinple posted on 03 Aug 2012, 10:15 1 1
If Sony uses this, will they get sued?
Sony: I have this in my PSP vista
Apple: Sorry, Sony's is used to play games, not used to control music or video, hence u copied me. Prepare to pay me money!!!!

Patenting system must be change.
1. You can only patent true technology. Not just design.
2. Patent must be granted to tech that you invented and not just prototype, idea or tech that redesigned. It must be existing new tech.
3. The tech to be patent must be illustrated every last detail and how the tech works..
23. AstronautJones posted on 03 Aug 2012, 10:27 2 1
Maybe apple should patent qwerty keyboard layout? That sound up their alley.

I think you mean "kickstand" because a kickstarter is for motorcycles and people trying to start businesses.
