Apple now holds the patent for rectangular device with rounded corners

0. phoneArena 08 Nov 2012, 06:40 posted on

As unbelievable as it may seem, the design for a rectangular device with rounded corners is now officially in Apple's portfolio of intellectual property. Patent number D670,286, which the company filed back in 2010, has been issued by the USPTO on November 6, and within it is described "the ornamental design for a portable display device", as pictured below. In other words, the majority of tablet manufacturers could potentially get sued by Apple for selling products that look too much like an iPad. But is that really going to happen?...

Judging by the name, you seem from SE Asia (SL or India if I would have to guess). USPTO grants patents only to US corps/people, and patent filing is pretty expensive.

What's wrong with the US patent system, did Apple bribe them?

Apple better become a patents collector company than innovative company. even the STYLUS they didn't use get infringing their patent...

the "i" is surely from a "sh¡t".

So money CAN buy anything...this is without a doubt the stupidest thing the USPTO could ever do. Patent a shape? Are you kidding me?

Now Apple's unrelenting grip will tighten on the tech world, and their lust for power will continue to grow. They have never created a single worthwhile thing in their entire history; everything they have now has come from other people/companies that they either paid off or outright stole from. They created nothing, yet own so much. This is the standard?

Well, with Apple's stock dropping and most of their lawsuits not going their way, perhaps all glory is indeed fleeting...

"Long story short, it is fascinating to know that a rounded rectangle can really be patented, even though some thought that wasn't actually possible."

Fascinating? How bout fracking extremely deplorable?!

Stop with the iPhoneArena bias!

I'm sorry to say but with patents like this, it makes USPTO a joke! Something has got to be done about this...

Rectangular device is over statement of the patent. The patent has to be more detailed and specific. The round edge has to be at certain degree and the measurement of the device has to come along with it at least the radio

So Apple spend the money and time on the patent, where no other products doesn't close to it. The greed starting to cost them darely than they do protect them.

No on wants be like them as they claim. And as Jimmy Kimmel says, all they product are the exact same, but different sizes, you either can talk to it or just listen to music. And the Apple's fans are toooooooooo stubborn and stupid to see that.

Taking advantage over a broken system is ok? Since when? I get that this is business and all, but there's a certain point where morality needs to be chosen over the possibility of an advantage over the competition.

If Apple wants to patent the shape of the iPad, fine; just as long as they don't sue companies over other tablets with a different aspect ratio it should be good. 4:3 is a bit inconvenient for use in all honesty (for me at least), 16:10 and 16:9 are a lot more practical for tablets of that size category.

Just really, don't SERIOUSLY sue over a damn shape. I could bet; if an Android manufacturer were to be granted a patent for the design of a handset with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and they sued Apple for the iPhone 5 with it, the whole community of Apple followers would be in an uproar. Hypocrisy at its best.

Maybe Apple should make better products instead of trying to push out the competition with lawsuits. What a concept.

I can see it coming now...apple is sueing so much these days they probably are applying for a patent that would allow them to be the only company who can sue.

Apple will own the world if they filed a patent for penis shape... Apple and their generic shapes... Pathetic... for the patent system to actually let this pass, extremely pathetic...

I knew the USPTO was incompetent, but this just shows that the extent of it is much, much worse than I could have imagined.

In short: Wow.

Like stated before, apple knows they can no longer compete and are getting left behind. Now to try and slow or limit the competition when really they are just going to piss them off and they will continue to leave apple in the dust while taking their customers while they are at it. Apple has to have someone in the higher ups of who is issuing patents on their payroll. This s**t is just getting well out of hand.

Time to storm the patent office and take it over with stricter standards for things to actually be patented ontop of that reevaluate all the patents curently filed and toss out alot that have been patented by apple and only keep the ones that are odviouse inovation.

I have to agree with you. If we continue to allow this nonsense, then it lets other companies believe that they can get away with this kind of bs. Somethings got to give!
