Apple is building its own Maps, but will it matter?

0. phoneArena 02 Nov 2011, 16:05 posted on

Apple has obviously been busy at work building its own map application to replace Google Maps on iOS, but what does Apple Maps need to be able to do, and when will we see it?...

Just wanted to point out that Google Maps has had that live traffic rerouting for quite some time now. It tracks people's cell phone speeds as they travel the roads and reroutes in real time if there is a major slowdown that is unusual.

This is one area where Apple will never catch up. I cant think of any "major" or "ground breaking" ideas left that they could use to leapfrog big G. Add Google's constistant updates and feature additions and it just seems like the unending road to catch up.. much less leap frog.

I've been hoping that google stops supporting iOS devices for navigation all together but I know thats against google's "do no evil" policy. They dont care, they just want their apps used everywhere.. that whole ubiquitous archipelago we talked about the other day. At least they are giving their own platform a real priority now as far as updates and features where they didnt really at first.

oh oh.. no, Taco keeps running around pretending he is going to get me "banned".

What it is (and ive explained this on 3 threads now but they move so fast... lol)

Taco and I have a bet. the bet is simple. Whoever sells the most in Q1 2012 wins. I've chosen samsung, he chose apple. The loser gets exiled forever from the boards. Taco thinks apple will win because apple is god to him, so he is ranting and raving all over the place about how he is going to "get me banned forever".
Nothing is further from the truth. Both have had top spots this year, so its anyone's game.
Its going to be a while though, as we have to wait for those Q1 results to come in.

I hope he keeps acting like a fool about it and reminding everyone, so when Apple loses (and they will), he has no wiggle room to say he "forgot" or there was no such bet.

Ah lol yeah I'm with you with the Samsung winning they have been doing great. Q4 id say Apple but with the turnover rate for iPhone users id say q1 they won't be selling nearly as much.

thats my thinking.. that and the 4s will be nearly 6 months old by the time Q1 ends while samsung will be launching new top end phone after new phone. With the nexus being later than we all expected, its sales should be strong through Q1 as well.. put it side by side with the i4 in a store, and it will kill most i4 sales.

Jobes I'd be happy for you to join the bet. Apple vs Samsuck. Most smartphones sold in Q1. Loser can't post again ever n PA.

I'd love to ban as many idiots as possible.

1. It's not ban if you don't know what the word ban means you should not use it.

2. If you want all idiots to leave them make sure you are gone too. PA will be idiot free

Dude you are going to hardcore lose that bet. You should have put like 2 or 3 manufactures against the Iphone sales. No one Android manufacture will beat Apple in sales.

you realize that apple only took the top spot for 2 quarters.. and samsung BEAT APPLE in Q3 of this year right? lol
Apple will only get a bump in Q4 for the iphone4s release, but will go back to second place in Q1 2012 as the phone gets older and less relevant than it already is, against Samsung's current line up + all the stuff thats about to launch
SGS1 + SGS2 + Nexus + Note > 3gs + 4 + 4s

I don't know man, I think you might be in more trouble than you think. Apple sales always go down before a new model launch. Also, did the bet specify worldwide sales or just US?

total world wide sales for the quarter. Not specific to any country or category.

Its a toss up. I think i have a better chance at winning than losing because it is Total Worldwide Sales. :)
Samsung took first place from Apple without having their biggest phone in their biggest market, which of course was the SGS2 in america. So that more than makes up for anyone "holding off" on buying the new iphone. If that many people were holding off, apple's sales would have had a huge downturn for Q3, which they didnt. If i remember correctly they were stagnant or slightly up. Samsung also has to compete with other android manufacturers will apple has no internal competition... and samsung still won.

Its anyone's game, but my chances are better. :)

It's world wide smartphone sales. Feature phones aren't counted.

in which samsung still won... even with just the smartphone sales. By 2 million i think :)

It'll be an interesting bet to keep an eye on. I'm not sure I would have made that bet, because I think there are more people who would wait on Apple before buying a smartphone than there are who would wait for Samsung, especially given the choices available in the Android ecosystem.

Also, the SGS2 may be just launching in America, but it has been out for a while in the rest of the world. I'd assume that means the sales around the world for the SGS2 will be dropping at a time when the iPhone is still relatively new.

It's gonna be close, and I'm not sure I agree that your chances are better.

Outside of america the iphone isnt nearly as strong of a seller. The bulk of the people that want the i4s are going to get it by christmas.

Working in the industry, I can tell you that is no longer true. I have had dozens of customers that held off until they knew if we were getting the SGS2 or not, and then held off until it was released. Were talking MONTHS. That has never happened for an android phone before.

HTC and Samsung have the best brand recognition in the android world (id give it to HTC as they have a better over all reputation) but Samsung has the only actual Android "Brand" that is known and coveted across the world, which is the Galaxy series.

In PA's own articles, it was showing how the SGS2 has been outselling the iphone in nearly every country they were both in since the day it was launched. It set sales records for android without being launched in america. I would have loved to see what it would have been like had the american carriers not screwed us and made us wait 6 months for its release.... and not made a snapdragon version..

I dont accept the "apple lost to samsung because everyone was waiting for the i5 announcement" because their sales didnt drop and most iphone users by their own admission are not that tech savy to know one from the other... or at least care. Apples sales were steady and stagnant while Samsung's shot through the roof on the back of the SGS2.

I wish the SGS2 and the 4s had launched at the same time, because then I WOULD have taken a phone vs phone bet... and won. Maybe next year with the i5 and SGS3.
Goodbye taco with this bet, and goodbye Gallito with the next one.

It was outdated before it was even released.. the iphone 4s that is lol. Apple is simply riding on the "idiots will buy it" the Jobs idea.

Added that in, but with the notes that 1) the feature is in beta (as are most Google products), and 2) it is part of Google Maps Navigation, which is separate, because you wouldn't get the rerouting if you just used Google Maps for directions.

Google Maps isn't the same app on the iPhone that you guys have on Android phones. On the iPhone almost every app on their is better than Google Maps. Not saying that it's Google's fault. Just the truth. The maps that comes on Android phones is awesome. But the iPhone version could almost be beat with a cowbell and a crayon. It won't be hard for Apple to put it to shame.

None of what you said makes sense. Are you trying to say that apps in general are better on the iPhone, or are you actually trying to say that Google Maps is better on the iPhone?

He's saying Google Maps on the iPhone isn't nearly as good as Google Maps for Android, and is going so far as to say the iPhone Google maps is so bad that all other map apps available for the iphone are better than the Google Maps for the iPhone.

Because of the poor quality of the Google maps for iPhone, according to Robes, Apple would not have a problem creating a superior map app.

He's not saying Google Maps is bad, just that the google maps for iPhone is bad. The Android version of Google maps is far superior.

I didn't find it confusing.

I think he's saying (incoherently) the map apps on the iphone in general are better than google maps on the android platform.....lol....lol...if this is what he means any map app on the iphone is like holding a candle light (iphone map app) in front of the sun(google maps app) you can't compare!

That's why I had to ask, because there's no way that anyone could believe that the Google Maps on iOS is better than on Android.
