Apple iPhone 6 to use Sharp's p-Si LCD display for launch next year

0. phoneArena 26 Apr 2011, 13:21 posted on

There has been a division in opinion over whether or not the Apple iPhone 5 will offer more than just minor changes from the current build; in the meantime, speculation is that the Apple iPhone 6, to launch in the Spring of 2012, will use Sharp's p-Si LCD display...

I guarantee there will not be an iPhone 6 by next spring.

Funny it says they will start making the displays next spring. Not the whole phone.

Right, so my statement stands. There will not be an iPhone by the spring. Did I say something that was incorrect?

msa1988 --

First, as you know, there are 8 months remaining in this year, which is a lot of time or lead time in manufacturing speak.

Second, if Apple wants Sharp to produce p-Si LCD's, trust me, Apple will get what it wants because Apple's too important a customer for Sharp.

Third, don't be surprised if Apple's tech people had already started experimenting with p-Si LCD prototypes.

Lastly, spring in 2012 ends on 6/19/2012, which is about 420 days away.

Is it just me....or did we miss iPhone 5 in there somewhere? Not that it matters, because it will be the same as it is now, except with maybe, MAYBE, a dual-core processor. Who cares anymore? Android is going to continue to demand more from its phone producers, and they will continue to deliver. Sorry, Apple, but you fell behind, again.

Right, never.

@iwebdroidberry7 (nice name, btw): Apple may be the number one producer of smartphones, and their revenue stream is nothing to laugh at. But the rate that they are willing to grow and innovate (not saying that they havent done so in the past), they are already behind. When iPhone 4 launched on Verizon, they should have done something to the device, rather than just making it CDMA compatible. When they launched the same device, they didnt grow, and it put them behind at least 6 months. In this buisness, you have to be willing to take risk, innovate, and put out something new. If you don't, or can't, then you will fall behind. Look at BlackBerry and Symbian, even at WebOS. They couldn't change, or weren't willing to, and have since nearly fallen off the map.

Your right to a point. Apple couldn't have done anything new to the VZW iPhone because the new one is right around the corner. I mean what could they have done to it? Making a CDMA iPhone only helped Apple adding 2.2 million iPhones under their belt helped them grow A LOT believe it or not. And thats probably what helped them beat Nokia.

But honestly they are no where near falling out of the game. As much as people (techies mostly) say Apple sucks, they are doing great. Maintaining a 25% marketshare, being #1 vendor, and dominating in the tablet market is something to still be proud of.

I personally believe Sprint is due for the iPhone to because like Verizon did last year, they no longer take shots at the iPhone in their ads. If the iPhone 5 rolls around this summer (or fall) on all three of those carriers its going to be a HUGE gain for Apple period.

Apple is still playing this game, they may not be winning in the mobile space right now. But they aren't doing bad either.

You make valid points there. Apple marketing is still one of the best departments on the planet, to be sure.

However, I think that they could have done alot to that iPhone before they gave it to Verizon. It made both companies a ton of money, but Apple could have recemented itself in the forefront of people's minds by making improvements. It launched in Feburary, and the new iPhone isn't even slated for release yet.

Perhaps they could have, or should have, sat on the release of the iPhone to Verizon for the newest model. Because they arent the only phone for the everyman anymore. Android is king on Verizon, and now Apple has a significant uphill battle ahead of them.

No they should not have waited because Apple did the same thing with Vodafone last year. They got the 3GS mid cycle but they allowed everyone that upgraded to upgrade again to the 4.

I dont see why they wouldn't do this with Verizon too because if they did they would make EVEN more money.

Your right Android is king on Verizon, but me personally as an example only had an Android device because there were no other choices on VZW, I owned the OG Droid, the X, and the Thunderbolt, but I traded my X on Craigslist for a iP4. Android is great but it just isn't for a lot of people. And as new webOS, WP7, and iOS devices are coming out soon I don't see a reason to go back to Android ever again... but thats just me.

At least you have used a few different OS. Im in the same shoes, as it were; I owned earlier models of the iPhone, but I got tired of the limitations that Apple set on both me and my phone. Switching to Android was a good call, for me, and I wont go back.

Alot of it comes down to what you need the phone to do, and what other equipment you own. I always ask my customers if they have PC or Mac when they look at smartphones, because that can really determine what they are looking to do with their phones, and what they know about electronics in general. A Mac user is always going to want an iPhone, because it works well with what they already have and they usually don't have the time or patience to try to rig a connection with Android. PC users, on the other hand, usually are willing to play around with their device and are looking for something that works with their PC, which Android does beautifully.

Alot of it is personal choice, really.

@iwebdroidberry7 I have just wasted too much of my time fighting Jobs' control freakishness on my iPhones. And the fact that Apple won't unlock their phones, even after the contract is over is unacceptable to me, so no matter what beauty Apple comes out with, I will not be buying their products, because their policies are unfriendly to customers in the extreme.

I just picked up a Galaxy SII and I'm extremely happy with it. Perfect gmail and SIP integration with the phone dialer. And I do love using widgets.

That doesn't make me an Android fan, I'd actually prefer my Galaxy with MeGoo, since that's closer to stock Linux.
But I'll just take the least proprietary OS I can get, where no asshole corporation is trying to step on my toes continuously.

So, say what you will, I feel like I got out of a jailcell.

With the Elop desaster unfolding at Nokia, Apple would have beaten Nokia even without the CDMA phone lol...

When has the world ever seen an executive retarded enough, to pronounce all current products dead, while being many months away from having any of the 'new' supposedly alive product ready, based on an OS who's market share hasn't been going anywhere, for other companies, cause people are sick of Microsoft's monopoleering...

As a matter of fact, it is so retarded, it makes one wonder if Elop is getting paid to sink Nokia, so M$ can buy them up cheap after bankruptcy.

apple did innovate with the original iphone... it changed the world... if it is good enough that people will still buy it then why make a new one? apple has proven they can innovate if necessary... do we expect them to not be like every other business and not make money when they can?

I am an Android guy, so hear me out. Not everyone in the cell phone world is a "geek" Not everyone needs a dual core processor, or the brightest screen, or the fastest download speeds. Look at iPhones, they are perfectly appealing to the average human: they are sexy and sleek, user friendly, and run extremely smooth. Who cares about the processors and all? Apple hasn't ,and never will, fall behind. it is always going to be appealing to almost all of the people in the world.

agreed. but not the 'best' which it is commonly referred to by the media (who hasnt got a clue) bc they are just average humans. which is the only reason i get a little irked when statements are made by average caring humans about cell phones.

Yeah those are probly the worst phone commercials I've seen period. It's a snobbish commercial reminding the snobbish iPhone users(the ones who are snobbish) that if they switch to lets saaaaay Android then they won't have "this" and they won't have "that".

I can't imagine too many non iPhoners saying "Hmm, you know what I DON'T have the Retina display, and I DON'T have the App Store. Time to make that leap."

I'm not against you but one could say the same about Android.

"Look at Android phones, they are perfectly appealing to the average human: they are sexy and sleek, user friendly, and run extremely smooth."

Android has the Apps (mostly) so that's no longer an arguement. Android is now smooth (atleast the G2x is thanx to Dual Cores). What Android REALLY has over iOS at this point is hardware variety and freedom. The iPhone will never stoop down to WP7's current position on the ladder but Android WILL make the iPhone vastly insignificant when compared.

ANDROID IS NOT SMOOTH. No where near WP7, webOS, or iOS. Android has many advantages but smoothness is no where near being one.

Apple continues to gain the revenue because if they put the picture of a bitten apple on a lump of crap on a stick and called it the iPhone dump, the moronic sheep of the world will buy it. When you want to research the technology and determine who is giving you value and front of the curve performance.... Android is the only choice. And if you want to be taken for your money and laughed at every 8 months or so...buy Apple.
