The new iPhone 6 will have a screen with a resolution of 1704 x 960 pixels, much higher than the current 1136 x 640 pixels on the iPhone 5s…

Apple is no dummy. They know if they went with a resolution lower then even FHD (1920x1080). That graphics tests and other graphics intensive applications will run faster because they are pushing less pixels then FHD display. Never mind a resolution of a QHD (2560x1440).

1136x640 = 727040 pixels, 2908160 bytes
1280x720 = 921600 pixels, 3686400 bytes
1704x960 = 1635840 pixels, 6543360 bytes
1920x1080 = 2073600 pixels, 8294400 bytes
2560x1440 = 3686400 pixels, 14745600 bytes
Pushing more pixels means pushing more bytes and with most displays push 16M colors, this means 3 bytes for colors, plus alpha and other controls making it 4 bytes per pixel. Now if you are playing a game at even 30fps. This means Apples new resolution 1704x960 will be pushing 196300800, or almost 200mb per second for 30fps. The new QHD (2560x1440) at 30fps will be pushing 442368000, or almost 450mb per second. If you try to go 60fps at these resolutions then Apples would almost be pushing 400mb a second and the LG G3 will be almost pushing 900mb a second. For me personally I will stick to 1920x1080. Its good enough for me and at the 30fps means it's pushing 250mb a second, and 500 at 60fps. QHD is nice but I will look for better features like longer battery life, more ram, more sensors.

Eh? It was totally expected.

I was expecting only doubling the resolution and not tripling it though. Their entire empire depends on their apps so you know for a fact that they would use a scalable resolution.

Tripling it instead of doubling it is risky though. If they only doubled it then the CPU/GPU would perform better. Tripling it would make it lose a lot of benchmarks to their rivals.

According to this they are only tripling the OG iPhone resoultion not the "retina" display resolution which would give way to a better benchmark score I think.

Yea the article is comparing it to the orig iPhone....not the iPhone 4.

If thats the case....every time an Android OEM goes to a higher screen res....it needs to get compared to the screen res of their phones in 2008, 2009.

If the Oppo find 7 is anything to go the QHD looked worse than the 7A in picture and color quality, on top of that I doubt you will be able to tell the difference from a FHD display when looking at it at a normal viewing distance!

Personally I think the G3 should have stayed with the FHD display instead as they could have increased the battery life even more! On top of that there won't be any QHD content to take advantage for and will most likely jump straight to 4K!

Still regarding the iPhone 6 resolution is the main for reason for the unusual resolution, due to apps being able to scale properly without needing to change much for app developers?

The last ground breaking iPhone was the iPhone 4. No one had a better screen than the retina display at that time. This new iPhone won't even match any of the phones on the market today and we are still months away from launch. The LG G3 looks so much better.

You actually dont need 1080p.... This resolution is " just right" for watching, errr... 960p videos.
But who encodes @ 960p? Lol

960p? More like a "never before seen resolution" on a mobile device.
