If the resolution is higher it will cause fragmentation because app developers will have to update their current apps for them to scale properly. Apple can't afford to put 640P resolution on a 4.8 inch screen and call it revolutionary.

I know that but how is it fragmentation.
Apps will still wrk on older versions.
How is it a problem ?!

It won't be. This is in a way fragmentation because of the different screen size/resolution. I think apple and devs can manage 3 screen sizes.

I don't think it will be fragmentation, but having apps with big black borders should never have been tolerated.

You need a bit of Xcode and Objective C programming to know why.

Apple don't have Android software ability to scale to different screen size and resolution. Every new device resolution is hard coded therefore the apps will have black bars around the corners unless developer program in new resolution and preferably new art work.

This is a design decision made for earlier iPod devices due to hardware resource constraint. iPhone is the product expansion from Apple MP3 iPod.

"If the resolution is higher it will cause fragmentation because app developers will have to update their current apps for them to scale properly."

Such thing was when iPhone 5 was released, but after that I think that many developers added few lines of code to their apps for automatic screen size determination. But it is just my theory, at least I would done that if I was developing for iOS. :)

It doesn't worth to buy iPhone 5S, better wait for iPhone 6 or even better choose an Android based flagship. :)

It seems difficult to get out, but honestly, you won't miss it if you try android. You can do so many more things and you get so many choices on what phone you want, whether you want a small screen, a large screen, a keyboard, or a great design and aluminum body, there is a better solution.

Technically, in a sense, it is till gragmentation - even if it takes apps like 1-2 weeks to adjust. Just admit it and embrace the F word. No one is safe at some point, no matter your OS.

Oh, I forgot; if a certain company does it, it's OK and doesn't have negative repercussions, right?

Oh, so if Apple stays with a 4" display on the iPhone, you guys say that the screen is not on par with the competition, and if they decide to increase the display size, you guys call it fragmentation.
Haters gonna hate.

They can keep the pixel density the same as they did with the 4-5 upgrade and that would mitigate a lot of the fragmentation issues since you will have to worry about only one aspect. With android they hit both, increased density and different resolution so that was a bigger issue but one thing they kept the same which apple didn't was the aspect ratio, which helped some.

Make it 1440x810. Same 16:9 ratio, but higher ppi (403 or so).

Devs just have to adjust the size range of the app, but the scaling shouldn't be an issue.

how is this fragmentation? 90%-95% of apple devices will still be running the latest OS available, and app developers can readjust their apps to scale from iphone 4 resolution to most likely 1080p on the iphone 6.

Only in name. Older devices get different versions. The iPhone 4 didn't get the Siri part of iOS, for instance. Only the latest iPhone gets the true newest version.

LG and Samsung with their flexible display..
Nokia and Sony with their design and camera.

Unlike android, ios apps can't upscale ! Therefore, EVERY developer will need to update EVERY app inorder to avoid such fragmentation. It will be similar to when iPhone 5 had letterbox issue for older apps which were made specifically for iphone 4s with 3.5 inch screen. There are still lots of apps which have letter-box issue.

App Store has 900,000+ apps, and developers need to update every app in order to avoid fragmentation.

Developers are our hero in the smartphone world. Apple fans should thank the developers, not bashing other companies/OSes.

The Nexus 4 is only 4.7" screen, and it's not a large phone. It's bigger than the iPhone, but hardly in the category as phablets.

Besides, Apple doesn't even have to build a much bigger phone, just ditch those ridiculously large bezels, problem solved. They already have the software to ignore side screen touches from holding the iPad Mini, use that on the iPhone.

The next best thing to hope for is more Google edition phones. Doubt they'd open up how many Nexus are allowed but if more OEMs would agree to stock and let Google push the updates, the bases would be covered.

With iPhone 5s sale topping the chart i really don't see why they need to change the 4" screen size.

Besides, its an unnecessary risk and also lower their profit margin.

Risk? Most ppl want a bigger screen. Also, if fanboys love their tiny 4" screen that much, why change that? Why not just release 2 models? An iPhone 6 and a 6i
