The idea of an affordable smart phone is on point. The problem is the 5C isn't affordable (and hideous). Cheap products aren't Apple's game. They should have, and should moving forward, stick to high quality, fashionable products their massive fanbase desires.

The only reason the 5Cheap was introduced is because of the cost to manufacture it.

*Edit: ...manufacture it compared to the iP5(non-S edition).

PA, you really need to remove the 240 second edit limit. What is the benefit from keeping it?

D_x_D, that is your opinion. Apple's official story was that the 5 was not easy to scale as was the case with the 4S, 4, etc.

If you ask me, the 5C is Apple's new way to leverage a new market. For example, look to 2014 when Apple tries to introduce the iPhone 6 -- the 5S will drop to its position, and now you have the 5C being offered at rock bottom prices.

It will be a homerun for Apple to get a 5C for free or $49 in 2014. To get to those prices Apple needs a huge production run meaning it gets to produce the 5C for at least 2 years, thus further lowering their long term average cost curve via economies of scale and scope.

Therefore, it's clear to me you really don't understand the concept "cost to manufacture it." The parts cost is what you are hinting at because of the plastic shell, but the lowering of the long run cost curve is the biggie. That is one serious mf*ker competitive edge that Apple has over android OEMs.

For example, the processors are recycled or have long production runs, the 4" screen is being spread out over hundreds of millions of units, etc., etc. Android OEM cannot make this level of economies of scale and scope.

As I have said before, in my opinion majority of Apple product users are just trend followers, they don't want to buy "cheap" iPhones since according to such people cheap is not cool and it is not good device if you want just to show off.

uh no, after all the intellegent guesses in this forum you decide to go this route? lol

"The same can be said for Galaxy products then... hmmmm?"

No, because:

1. Android based smartphones (including Galaxy series products) are cheaper than iPhone.

2. People buys Android based smartphones not because they want look cool or trendy, but because of practical possibilities that Android based smartphones can give you. While majority of iPhone users buys iPhone just to show off.

Samsung devices are populart because of practical thngs and people buys them because of practical thngs not because they are popular. While Apple products are popular just because brand name trend. And it is two totally different things.

thats your opinion PAU...

the fact of both of our statements is that both phones are popular... so people buy them because they are popular.

we both know half of the people who buy the galaxy phones use those gimmicky features... same with iphone... most people probably wont turn on the fingerprint scanner.

samsung is a popular brand same as apple.

samsung is 70% gimmick features & 30% practical uses. in the world of popular/trendy phones it's well known that Samsung & Apple are top two in this category. you're in complete denial trying to justify Samsung as a non-trendy phone.

ppl buy iPhones for 1 of 2 reasons...either a: b/c they have had too many bad exp. w/Android that they are sick of the OS (which is what i see more of) & b: most ppl can grasp the UI.

No, it is you in denial! It is doesn't matter it is Samsung phone or not, if it is Android based device then it has much more practical use than iPhone.

dude why are you posting that video?

The study of what's practical vs why people buy are two different things.

how can you sit there and say iphone and samsung are popular but people only buy samsung because its practical features?

That's dumb... its so easy to accept the fact that people are blind on both sides of the fence.

"how can you sit there and say iphone and samsung are popular but people only buy samsung because its practical features?"

Because practical features made Android based devices popular.

Apple was trying to "redfine" the term "affordable" with 5C and failed miserably.

$50.00 on a 2 year contract is really affordable compared to $200.00 for the 5s. The fact of the matter is, that there are two options, and one of them happens to be an iPhone that is cheaper than its posterboy model.

Remember that you are talking only about U.S. market. In the rest of the word it doesn't work in such way.

I think I may give in and upgrade my 4S when I come back to the US in December. If I can trade in the 4S and not pay a dime for the 5S (16 GB) then why not?!
