Apple iPhone 4: be careful not to drop it

0. phoneArena 24 Jun 2010, 04:51 posted on

Surely one of the worst experiences an iPhone user can have with their shiny toy is to accidentally drop it. The same seems to be valid for the new iPhone 4...

I have to agree with you here. Don't drop your phone. It's that simple. Really. You don't drop your coffee pot which you drink in the morning every day, and in the same manner you don't drop your phone.

Really? My friend has dropped his DROID over 30 times and it works perfectly, yea some of the black paint is chipped off but it works just fine. Face it, the iphone is a fragile item, it can't take any damage at all. I would know, I had the iphone before, I dropped it once and the screen went white...still worked but utterly useless. I did not want to deal with that again.

I have dropped my droid many times while in a drunken stupor and it works just as good as the day I bought it with little damage, just some scratches on the metal case. You can keep your pretty little iphone, I'm quite happy with my droid.

First your friend is a moron, 30 times? he has butterfingers because thats either exaggerated or he is not careful with his stuff. Go get the droid X and do this same exact test and lets see what happens. The droid is heavy and not the same as a phone that is keyboardless. The iphone isn't fragile, I have been running and going fast and my iphone fell and never broke....I disagree but respect your opinion

why do you drop your phone a 100 times? are you retarded? or just a rich careless person that can replace it in a heartbeat. You don't sound like a person that takes of your stuff. You sound responsible my friend. Keep dropping your $500 phone then.

Accidents indeed happen. So everyone please stop going over these. Phones fall. Phones break. Its mostly a matter of luck. However, one should be careful enough in order not drop their phone on a regular basis (unless you really hate it like I hate my nokia 5800 - but thats another issue). If your phone breaks it's not because it's made of low quality materials, be it a Droid, an iPhone or even a freaking N-GAGE. It's because you dropped it. Period.

Apparently the millions upon millions of people who bought the iPhone\3G\3GS\4 as well as all the iTouch models, disagree with you, it appears. I pity your customers who have to endure seing a high-end phone being thrown on purpose. It's like crashing your car just to see how much damage if at all would be be caused. Sure, car crashes are part of life, but it doesn't justify not being very careful when handling it, not to mention crashing it on purpose. Same thing on phones. I can assure you that every phone manufacturer would tell you right away that their phone is not meant to be dropped.

Does anybody remember the article on the droid screen??? It has the gorilla screen which is a really strong glass. it made it one of the strongest touch screen phones out there. why apple doesnt use it is beyond me youd think they have enough money to invest in something smart like moto did. But then again if an iphone fanboy breaks their phone they'll just buy another one.Whisch is smart when your in it for money not quality. Motorolla actually cares about their customers and makes their phones quality which is why so many people are going for the DROID X...

while that is true, it happens much more frequently with phones that have a bezel around the screen. I guess theres just more inert pressure to start with. Concidering the iphone4 is just 2 pieces of glass held together by a metal bezel, its probably going to happen quite a bit. yell and call people retards all you want, but you dont see motorola or HTC making all glass phones.. LOL.

First Im going to point out that its annoying watching you get a tore up about this article. Second my wife dropped her droid Eris 2ft from the ground getting in the car and it spider the glass. Angle has a lot to do with it, it could happen to anyone. iI take very good care of my phones and they're always in great shape, but in Droids defence, I tripped going up a cement pebble stair case to my apartment and literally slammed my phone down on the corner of the stair to catch myself from face planting and I got a tiny nick at the top right of the phones metal rim. I thought for sure slamming down like i did it would have been broken. The iPhone is nice and heavy seems sturdy, but that Droid is a fucking tank...way better built than the iPhone.

Drop tests are engineering work, retard. They aren't for the retarded, they are for engineering and QC, 2 of the main parts of the design process. That said, proper drop tests should have been done on production level units. We can only assume that this was done, and Apple figured that the results were acceptable. Apple made sure to touline the need for a "bumper" in their press conference. That should tell you that the bumper wasn't built in for asthetics, but is needed to prevent accidental damage.

I think the overall density of the phone plays in to how well it can survive a drop. The iphone has quite a bit of gear put into a fairly small casing. This means that the impact when it its the ground will all be translated into a smaller surface area than would be a phone like the droid. Also, adding a physical keyboard diminishes some of the impact because the phone is no longer one solid piece and some of the impact can be dispersed through vibrations between the two pieces instead of all being transfered to the phone and its internal parts.

Ok, so the device broke after 5 drops. One could argue that yes glass will break after so many attempts. However I would say these drops where pretty realistic. People drop phones all the time; this is something which really should be taken into consideration when developing a new device. I have dropped on accident my droid several times and it has not broken. I would argue that the iphone is indeed poorly constructed. Please take care of your device; on the other hand s$%t happens and we all know that so yeah. Call the guy a fag or what ever but don't get mad get glad if you don't have an iphone 4.

Well there are rumors that the screen issues fix themselves. And maybe phonearena is waiting for their own unit to test out call quality and other stuff instead of relying on some guy from the Internet. and I'm so incredibly pissed about the screen strength. 30x stronger than plastic my butt. But still, you guys can't really compare to the Droid. They're two entirely different form factors. Maybe Nexus One? That's the closest thing I can think of. And why are there so many Android users?!!! I don't get it. There's an article about the Droid getting 2.2 before the Droid X and almost no comments. Froyo is less important than iPhone's broken screen and other problems? And then later you guys get mad that there's too many iPhone articles and not enough Android.

Supposedly the yellow screen issue has to do with the bonding of the screens. They had to push so many units that it didn't get a proper curing time, and supposedly after use the issue goes away once the bonding material cures. But hey, who knows.

E.N. - Why do so many iPhone fans jump on Android articles?

posted on 24 Jun 2010, 12:45

40. E.N. (Posts: 2323; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)

Well I can't speak for others, but I go on Android articles to actually check out other phones. I only respond when I see comments like iPhone is behind spec wise or people only buy iphones because they want to look cool. But people come to iPhone articles just to annoy it seems. As of now, there are probably more Android comments than iPhone comments, and its usually always like that. I mean look at this:http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/First-gen-DROID-to-get-Froyo-before-DROID-X-article-a_12128.html Wasn't froyo the crazy update that Droid users were going crazy over a couple weeks back? And now no one cares? But I honestly think that a lot of iPhone users couldn't care less about Android. Most are really happy with their phones. But it's like the Android community feels like there's always something to prove to Apple (and not to windows mobile, palm, or blackberry). If Android is already the best like all of you guys say then what's the point of returning to every iphone article and saying iphone is dead, iphone is old, iphone is catching up. I don't get it.

I have a similar experience when I go on an Android article or a VZW article. In my experience anything that has been pro-Adroid or VZW or anything other then "Yeah Apple!", is automatically turned into an anti-iPhone/Att by the iPhone fans. Even in articles where the iPhone isn't even mentioned, an iPhone owner will comment on how we're hating on the iPhone. No doubt, the iPhone was a revolutionary phone, I would argue with anyone who says it wasn't but times have changed. Apple spearheaded the changing cellphone technology, but now it is playing catch up and there are some Apple fans that will not tolerate anyone saying that any other company has a great phone also. As for the article you're referring to, that's great but not much there. I and many others are really happy with 2.1, so I don't think too many people will be commenting on 2.2. But a phone made of glass...that breaks when dropped? That just screams for a comment, and I wouldn't care if it were an iPhone, a Droid X, or an HTC Whatever. Glass phone breaking is just a duh moment all day long. Be honest, if this were about the Droid, wouldn't you want to see the video also? The first person to post said that "Anything is going to break if you drop it 4 or 5 times." and a former iPhone owner disagree stating that "My friend has dropped his DROID over 30 times and it works perfectly." All this person was saying is that not every phone would break after 5 drops. And your right, a lot of iPhone users could care less about Android, but there are some who can't stand it for the simple fact that its not an iPhone. The same can be sad about Android users, but this all started from someone who isn't and just had something positive to say about a non-iPhone. I've read a few of your post and I think you have been very fair when you talk about you likes and dislikes of certain phones and OS's, so are a lot of other people I see here posting in this article. But there are a few that are so anti-anything else that it makes it really hard not to come into the iPhone articles and rub a little salt in the wounds. Doesn't make it right, but just wanted to explain the other side of it.

I didn't know glass breaking was so interesting. I agree, iphone owners do troll too. But its not as bad as Android. In Engadget for example, whenever something bad is posted about Apple, whether if its their costly Apple TVs, broken screens, uselessness of MobileMe, yellow dots or whatever, Android users scream in joy. But if its something good, like the recent review of the iPhone 4, Android not only attack the iPhone users, but even the writers/websites themselves. They're like" oh I bet Apple is paying you," "I'm never going back to this site again," or even "Engadget is obsessed with Apple." Like I've said before, I actually like Android. My sister has the Droid and I can see its strengths. But the Android community is probably the only thing thats making me really dislike Android.

Glass breaking by itself isn't interesting. But a company making a glass phone, not anticipating that might make the new phone more fragile than its predecessor, selling the phone to MILLIONS, and some of those loyal millions defending that company's decision to sell them sub-standard hardware...That my friend IS so very interesting! And I do understand your feelings toword the Android community. But you have got to understand why they are so joyful when there are iPhone troubles. For months there have been iPhone users to others how their phone and their carrier sucks! People waited for someone to come out with something that could compete and when Android came out the iPhone owners kept taking shots. Now that there are phones that are as good and in some cases better, the tables are now turned and it seems that some iPhone fans can dish it out but they can't take it! So yea, some Android users will attack, but the few bad apples (honestly, no pun attended there either ) or iPhone fans brought this on themselves.

20 times stiffer usually means more brittle, I'm not surprised at the result, but how about some scientific methods here! This video is useless and proves absolutely nothing! I don't know what is worse: that the company created the video just for an attempt at 'credibility', or that the posting became a competition to see who dropped their phone more without bricking it. @iloveiphone25 > just shut your damn mouth! You're the kind of dumb fanboy that give us intelligent iPhone users a bad rep. Just shut up. This test shows some bad news for iPhone 4 plain and simple. I dropped my iPhone 3G several times. Many more than four. On concrete asphalt and tile. I only received minor dents if any at all. And my screen never cracked, but that's probably due to the scratch proof invisible shield. Never broke always worked fine. And I've dropped it prolly over a dozen times over the past 18 months. So once again: "iloveiphone25 shut the hell up!"
