According to industry insiders, poor yields on Apple iPad mini panels from Taiwan's AU Optronics has been preventing Apple from keeping supply matched up with demand; in order to get more minis out, the Cupertino based firm is rumored to be looking at another panel supplier...

That remains to be seen. If Apple left Samsung for this company and didn't do the proper research on whether they could keep up with production, it's Apple's fault. If Apple released the iPad Mini and didn't do the proper research to know hardware manufacturers could keep up, it's Apple's fault. If this company promissed Apple they could meet demand but in reality can't, shame on AU.
Two big questions to ask are will these new companies get it together to meet Apple's needs or will Apple realize that and try to make amends with Samsung, if that bridge hasn't been completely obliterated by all the lawsuits.

Exactly. You shoot yourself in the leg if you leave a trusted large volume supplier. You deserve this iFruit.

Question is do you expect such failoures (short supply if at all ad not short demand) when the Logistics maestro (which earned him coveted post of CEO) is heading the company? If answer is no then it means there's shortage of demand :)

that is the advantage of samsung over apple. samsung made almost all their parts while apple rely on a lot of companies .

Most of the success of Apple is their tightly wound vertical integration. Finding one vender that excels in one area and another vender that excels in another. Apple is breaching part of this integration by allowing multiple companies for one component just to meet demand. This practice is out of the norm for Apple and I suspect it will lead to issues regarding hardware inconsistancies.

My local walmart had all sizes in stock today. It's the Round Lake Walmart in Illinois. Sams club in Gurnee had iPad mini's but not the 16gig. Guess no one wants to pay $429 for a mini.
