Apple iPad 2 vs Honeycomb tablets vs webOS HP TouchPad: fight!

The battle of the heavyweights has officially been staged – the Apple iPad 2 is the successor to the original iPad, which dominated the tablet segment in the last year, but the new contenders appear with…

This is the first time I have paid any real attention to the HP touchpad- that looks like a serious contender. Heavy guy tough.

Wow the iPad 2 specs are GARBAGE and yet tons of people will go stand in line for one lol
Side by side it doesnt even compare with the rest, it's BELOW average specs and still offers no expandability, flash support, no option to upgrade later to 4g when supports in the customers market, vga camera on the front....
Have fun showing off your over priced, below average, but yet very shiney tablet, fanboys. "But its soooo thin!" lmao
If the iPad 2 gets 80% of the market, it will just prove how pathetic people are to show off shiney and not substance.

Haha well said. Couldn't agree more.
"But its by Apple!"

It could be the fact that Apple products are known for their quality. If you go by specs alone, your an idiot. So stand in line with all the uneducated, follower android fanboys who think their device is the shit because the specs chart has big numbers. Specs wont mean anything if its slapped together with bubblegum and duct tape. I refuse to purchase Apple products for reasons of my own, but your comment is just idiotic and typical of an Android fanboy.

Couldn't agree more. You have to look beyond specs. I've seen really shitty computers by deal that look amazing on paper, but are crap in real life.
I was having this discussion with my roommate yesterday. I told him I was going to get the iPad 2 because I trust Apple. And that's not blind trust. There are people who bought the Galaxy S phone that are still waiting foran update to come from Samsung to fix bugs in the phone (I think they may have finally released the update they promised last year). Samsung, on the other hand is coming out with a brand new Galaxy phone. Same thing with all the other manufacturers. With Apple, I know my iPhone/iPad is going to get updated on a timely fashion. Plus, it's always a plus to have a ton of apps.
14. DJLegacy2k5 (Posts: 212; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
LOL, how do you TRUST a company that makes ONE phone device PER year and still cant work out their hardware issues, or when they tried these great updates, screwed up most of their older devices.
Obvioulsy it IS blind trust you build your position on.
Less features + higher cost + no insurance + paid tech support= Shitty Company 4 The Sheep 2 Follow
16. JeffdaBeat (unregistered)
I'm not dissing Android at all. I'd go for an Android phone if it were from Google. The Nexus One is a good example of that. No SenseUI or Motoblur. Just Android. My problem is the bloatware they put on top of Android.
I can trust a company that makes one product a year because they only have to focus on that ONE product. How many Android devices has...say...Motorola made? When Google releases a new update to Android, Motorola has to modify the OS even further to work on all the different devices...some are high end others low end. Plus, they have to worry about all the new phones coming out...where do you really think their priorities are in that one?
Apple has to worry about 4 phones and two iPad. They update the iPhone every year and the moment your phone is not fully supported (there is still some support behind it) you're able to upgrade.
19. DJLegacy2k5 (Posts: 212; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
Lets ALLLLLL keep in mind, I am NOT an ANDROID fanboy. I hate just about all of the low end Android phones out there and I hate MotoBlur...(I do love my Atrix though)
So, I never say any OS specifically is better than Apple. I would rather however have a High-End Android like the Atrix over any Apple product so far. I even like WP7 over the iPhone (once it gets more apps).
Until Apple offers affordable insurance options, removable batteries, free tech support, expandable memory, more durable units and options like these for the consumer I will not support anything that they sell, especially when their "retail" prices are 9 times out of 10 higher than all of the other devices that it contends with.
At least Android gives customers the option of LOW END and HIGH END, different price points, insurance and other options where as Apple says "take this, pay top dollar, and leanr to hold ur phone differently".

whats wrong with having a phone do what the company wanted it to do?? people keep talking bout bloatware is and that im a phone geek and my phone does super well straight out of the box, if you never knew what bloatware and all that jazz was u wouldnt be complaining bout it, YOU GIVE PEOPLE GOLD AND THEY WILL SURELY TURN IT INTO STERLING, EVERYTIME
on that note GO APPLE, GO ANDROID, GO WP7, HP, and whatever else is out there keep doing ya thing it doesnt f'ing matter if you like just buy it and shut up if not then just get a flip phone or just use your laptop and landline phone
GOOD WORK DEVELOPERS AND COMPANYS
no sarcasim im serious good work shut up everybody even me, they are just toys might be useful and make thing more convient but are just toys
135. marshefen (Posts: 24; Member since: 27 Jan 2011)
The Xoom doesn't have Motoblur. It's just stock Android.
15. coolkalpesh (Posts: 9; Member since: 13 Dec 2010)
totally agree with you..you need to look beyond specs..good product is combination of hardware & software...just putting in high end hardware won't out perform apple.. it is the optimal combination of hardware/software that is giving an edge to apple over other products..no doubt competitors are getting closer with every new product..but just looking at specs to decide who is better is little stupid.
17. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Yes, you have to look beyond specs to quality of the product... and Motorola is a serious contender there too.
The various generations of the iPhone rank about with the rest of the major smartphone manufacturers in terms of reliability. They aren't really any more reliable. They're good, but not necessarily the best.
32. stilt (Posts: 63; Member since: 13 Jul 2008)
whatever i have had a iphone 3gs a 4th gen ipod touch both i used over wifi cause i refeused to have at&t as a carrier so I know first hand how iphones work in general my mom has the iphone 4 and i teach her everything about it, i was with at&t and left right before the iphones came out i wanted one oh so bad thought it was the best thing ever so i was in the hype myself i was a fanboy, but got a samsun alias from verizon then blackberry curve, samsung saga, samsung omnia then blackberry tour, storm 1, storm2, blackberry bold, got crazy and added a second line and got the original motorola droid, i still wanted a iphone and while i had a motorola droid i received a iphone 3gs from a person that had left at&t iphone for droid so they just gave me there 3gs, my wife purchased a 4th gen ipod touch, the droids blow the iphone out of the water no fanboy stuff here just by experience alone the flash the removable memory, the free apps that offer for the most part any song that you are searching for ringtomes games, etc etc etc etc etc. hands down android took the game over everyone i know are either switching from blackberry to droid or from iphone to droid, and once i fell in love with my droid i gave the 3gs to my sister in law so that she can listen to music on here mail delivery route and she uses it only for music just like i did but she has a droid as her phone with verizon then i just got the xoom tablet my god the google people got a jackpot of a device and in android period. google maps turn by turn voice, so fast on the internet in barely i mean barely used my laptop and with the xoom tablet im seriously thinking of selling my laptop i mean why do i need it and the xoom has 32gb of internal memory and i have a 32gb sd card that i won in a drawing so that 64 gb of memory and when that runs out if it ever does then i'll just pop in one of the eight other memory cards that i have from all of the other smartphones that i had in the past so that gives me about 120gb of memory can ipad iphone ipod do that NOPE so i dont go by spec i go by experience did you see how many devices ive had i know from experience not hearsay or fanboyism or spec sheet from pure expeince android is the best. but dont get me wrong i im seriously thinking bout getting my wife a ipad 16gb just cause it 499 and she dont do much on laptop or phone or computers so flash doesnt matter toh hear expandable memory, long battery life removable battery so it would be good for her cause it dosnt do much and she doesnt do much so its perfect for not much of doing, almost everything you want on app store you have to pay for and that the truth forget super quality people want cheap and free and inexpensive
33. stilt (Posts: 63; Member since: 13 Jul 2008)
and after the original droid i had the htc incredible, wife got the lg ally, then she upgraded to the droid 2, and i know have the droid x waiting for the motorola bionic to come but might stick with my droid x cause the xoom tablet kinda of fulfills all my needs really and my droid x does the rest,
108. clevername (Posts: 1435; Member since: 11 Jul 2008)
Wow. It's funny to see you use commas because the utter lack of a period in your paragraph makes It a little hard to read there buddy.
37. Owlet (Posts: 450; Member since: 21 Feb 2011)
I remember a problem with iPhone antenna was discovered. Fanboys expected Steve to come out, fess up and take responsibilities. Well, he came out, said other phones do the same (shifting blame somewhere else) and don't hold it that way (arrogance and no responsibility for his fail). Is that fixing bugs in a timely fashion?
148. deloris (unregistered)
I agree. I'm still waiting for bluetooth streaming fix for my Android phone - Droid X. I don't think they will fix it as they will want to sell me another device with updated software. With Apple's iPhone, at least I would get iOS updates that made my iPhone better and I was able to use it for a few years.
35. Owlet (Posts: 450; Member since: 21 Feb 2011)
It doesn't look like the 3 better tablets in this comparison chart are "slapped together with bubblegum and duct tape". Specs don't mean anything? But PA brought this up and wanted to compare the specs...
3. alc (Posts: 17; Member since: 19 May 2010)
I assume the bolding in the comparison is to point out who "wins". How come the Samsung doesn't win the weight category and ipad2 is bolded? Great job phonearena.
5. DJLegacy2k5 (Posts: 212; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
Because PhoneArena works for apple, havent you noticed, they are so biased they cant even bold FACTS properly without screwing things in their favor.
29. hi (unregistered)
this is pretty fail phonearena
36. Owlet (Posts: 450; Member since: 21 Feb 2011)
Not only weight needs to be fixed. How about to highlight the winners of memory, memory expansion and front-facing camera categories?
44. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
because that would mean the ipad2 doesnt come out on top of many categories. we cant have that now can we.
Hey how about this promise from apple. Since 17 people died at the ipad plant this year by stupicide from the roof. (so bad they installed nets around the buildings), why doesnt apple promise better working conditions so there is less death surrounding their electronics. how do all you liberals stand for the slave like conditions that apple puts on its employees?!? frikkin hippocrites.
6. WirelessCon (Posts: 309; Member since: 11 May 2010)
Which one has the brightest screen with the highest contrast and fastest refresh rate? I think Phonearena forgot about the "Arena" part of their namesake on this article. Just sayin'.
8. hello-dirty (unregistered)
The HP was stated to not have a rear camera in the pres release, just a FFC. I really do not know why one would need a RFC on a tablet. It would be easier to just use your phone or any tiny point n shoot to do the job. I'm sure that someone out there will have need to take pics or vids, like an insurance adjuster snapping pics all on the same platform so there is no need to send multiple emails or transfer files, but most consumers do not NEED one.
9. chocolatebear76 (Posts: 122; Member since: 03 Mar 2011)
i've never own a tablet yet apart from my Nokia N900 but i'm a big fan of technology,to me,naivety that i've been observing for the past few years now its just rediculous, speaking precisely to the apple fanatics, let us all be real,we want tablet to be as a mobile pc if not a pc second.
Let us all take a closer look at these spec, who in their right mind can say,Ipad 2 has won,if you come to look at it well, apart from the apps that everybody knows they got more than other but we're fogetting the reasons why we need this mobile devices,to me Ipad 2 among the other contenders come last, for most importantly noooo flash on it,that alone sucks enough and i'm sure there are other important spec it hasn't got aswel

I'm anti-Apple from experience, I had Apple products. Other questions?

All these trolls haven't owned Apple products. Most of them don't even fully understand what the specs mean. They just follow around all the apple stories and troll.
84. Owlet (Posts: 450; Member since: 21 Feb 2011)
You are wrong about that. But I fully understand how you would support Apple, since YOU never tried better things.

Ive used windows, blackberry, palm old and web OS, droid, droid 2 and incredible. I prefer iPhone.
18. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Hilarious that the Apple fanboys were screaming over the past few weeks that "You can't compare the iPad's specs to the XOOM's!!! You have to wait for the iPad 2 to see that the XOOM is definitely overpriced for its specs!!!"
And now that the iPad 2's specs are released... oh my. Either matching or worse than the XOOM. So now what, are we supposed to wait for the iPad 3 in order to get a product that has better specs than the XOOM?
I'd still gladly pay 200 bucks more (in the computer department, that's really not all that much) for a product that has better specs and has a reliability record as good as a product which is only an incremental improvement over its predecessor.
Steve Jobs should be embarrassed that he insists on this customer alienating business model.
39. Owlet (Posts: 450; Member since: 21 Feb 2011)
Do you remember how they were screaming iPad2 will BLOW the competition away? Now they are saying, well, specs are not all that important after all... Can you argue with that kind of logic? LOL!
40. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Oh hell yes, I know, lol. Now it's all quiet on the western front. I mean, even when they're disappointed they have to hide it behind the curtain of fanboyism.
20. CRICKETownz (Posts: 980; Member since: 24 Oct 2009)
im on the quality train...iPd2 doesnt have the highest specs out there but reliability is everything. fragmentation on the Android platform is their achilles heel. im still waiting on FROYO for my Galaxy S. i dont have Flash now but i did on my Droid X. its not as lovely as everyone makes it seem so not having flash isnt so bad. i dont understand people who despise somebody for liking Apple. your strong dislike is the same "fanboyism" concept in reverse. Apple makes solid products esp. if you are in the graphic design or music production industry. whats the "best" is interchangeable based on the individual.
22. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Yes, Apple makes quality products.
Yes, they even sometimes come out with innovative products.
Yes, Apple has an awesome aesthetic design team. Their products are generally very pretty.
But most importantly, they have an incredible marketing team.
I don't mind someone who enjoys Apple products and prefers them after making intelligent comparisons.
What I CAN'T FREAKIN' STAND is the group of people who let themselves be victimized by Apple's marketing department, who absolutely insist that Apple is the best there ever was, bar none, who spit on Android and laugh at every negative thing that happens which is associated with it, and ignore every negative thing that happens on Apple's end-or defend it with increasingly stupid rationalizations.
For instance, take the recent virus attack on Android Market. Even though the apps were pulled only minutes after the problem was discovered, and even though the problem only affected certain versions of Android (namely the older ones) and even though it's roughly the same risk you'd have on an ordinary computer, Apple fanboys were quick to point, laugh, and decry Google's app approval process....while completely failing to mention the Baby Shaker scandal.
See, Google doesn't handpick apps, yet removed the problem apps minutes after they were quietly informed of the problem.
Apple DOES have a "rigorous" vetting process, and yet let Baby Shaker through. Baby Shaker was up for at least two days before public outcry forced its removal. Even worse, it was a paid app, which meant that Apple made MONEY off of it before it was pulled.
People who ignore stupidity like that when it comes from Apple yet jump on the smallest problem that surfaces with Android are the people I have the most distaste for. And I'm sure many "Android fanboys" here will agree.
24. DJLegacy2k5 (Posts: 212; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
EXACTLY MY FEELINGS...Althoguh I dont like allot about Apple as a company.
27. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
I'd be willing to try one of their laptops eventually if I had that much money to spare, but the problem is that I don't. Their cheapest laptop is a thousand freakin' dollars. I'm typing on a 300 buck Dell that serves my needs just the same.
But their phones? Nah. No need. Well, I'll play with the iPhone 5 in the store. But I just don't get excited about iOS or the phones supporting it. It's all right there, nothing to explore, nothing to learn. Not to mention the iPhone 4 is uncomfortable in my hand. The edges cut into my palm too much. I hope Apple doesn't persist on that design choice in the future.
On the other hand, I have owned 3 Motorola phones, and none of them have disappointed me yet. My first phone, a humble v195, survived just about everything I could throw at it, and had incredible battery life and reception. My Cliq did just fine; I just turned it back on today (I'm going to give it to my nephews on a wifi only basis if their mother approves) and it worked great. My Droid X only gets temperamental once in a great while, but a quick restart settles it down. And all of them have survived multiple drops, water encounters, smacks, smudges, and various abuse. And you know what? Blur works just fine for me. My only complaint is the clunkiness of the social updates widget.
Anyway, I talk too much. Thanks for your support, DJ. Play us a tune. Can I request something from the Beastie Boys? :)
28. BaiGanyo (Posts: 308; Member since: 07 Feb 2011)
Thats why I posted earlier that Apple is the worst value. I want tangibles, something concrete, not a bunch of psychobable feel good fluff like "it's so smooth." I'm buy a computer product, not a stool softener.
66. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Actually I don't seevany Apple fans bashing android. Do you know why? They're happy with their iPhones and don't care if people buy android. I only see you losers bashing Apple and following all their stories like lost puppies.
86. Owlet (Posts: 450; Member since: 21 Feb 2011)
It's because it hurts to see how some people are so naive and taken advantage of!
23. DJLegacy2k5 (Posts: 212; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
Sadly, I am a DJ and use windows for production simply because of the piss poor customer service of Apple, so even though it would probably work slightly better, I am a consumer dont like being screwed over on insurance, tech support, replacement part cost, or overall cost in general for my money.
Once Apple proves it isnt out to just screw over their customers, then maybe i will support them.
25. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
When I signed onto Verizon's (then brand spanking new) warranty department, the first thing we were taught in training was the importance of customer service to a business's success.
While obviously Apple is succeeding spectacularly in spite of this general principle, I can only echo your sentiments. Devices will eventually fail. What matters is what happens when the device fails. What response will you get? Apple consistently holds the middle finger up to its customers whenever there's a problem. No apology for Baby Shaker, no apology for Antennagate (and no significant redesign either!) nothing, nothing, nothing.
143. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
Wait wait wait wait. Your comment has zero merrit
Just because Product 1 from company A was reliable, doesnt mean product 2 will automatically be reliable. Lest you be reminded of Antennagate or how easy the iphone4 breaks.
FRAGMENTATION IS ON THE ANDROID PHONES, NOT TABLETS. There is only ONE android tablet OS and that is Honeycomb. Since so far Google isnt allowing much for manufacturer customizations on honeycomb, fragmentation shouldnt be an issue.
ALL GalaxyS (american) phones have had official froyo 2.2 updates. If you havent gotten it yet, maybe u should pay attention. Not all are OTA updates, some are through Kies.
Yes, apple definatly has better music/graphic production apps than android. Hopefully that will get ported over since android is so popular now (hint hint developers.. lol).
Flash is important. Your just willing to give it up for your own reasons. Just about every web page these days have flash. Thats just saying "i like paying top dollar to have a 1995 web experience". Retro is cool and all, right.. lol.
26. Tfitz (unregistered)
Ain't that some shhh... Android Rocks!
30. darko (unregistered)
guys, guys..am i the only one who thinks that the HONEYCOMB is actually the greatest anti ipad2 feature?
it's user interface and usability and overal abilities are miles beyond apple's icon-only(!!!) retarded little OS
31. Tech Savvy (unregistered)
I don't have a big problem with Apple, I just see them as the product for the "less savvy" public sheep. I would probably own one if not for their support line and cost of equipment. As far as their Ipads go, my IT branch had a chance to demo a couple. The major factor for us was that, out of the box you can't utilize the product. It must be tied to Itunes. That just seems idiotic. Then once activated, there are no real "usable" apps preinstalled that lets you be productive. And it just looks like a large Ipod Touch. Nothing special or unique about that. Sorry, that is just not enough of a game changer when compared to the XOOM and Honeycomb.
67. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
You're right that less tech savvy people like the iPad. That doesn't make them sheep. Apple has a more user friendly OS. Remember before windows we had DOS. Windows was much more user friendly and allowed more people to use a pc. Apple has taken it to a new level with the iPad and iPhone. Lots of people that didn't use smartphones and pc's use them now thanks to Apple.
41. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Aww, look at the fanboys who went through and downthumbed pro Android comments. I undid as much damage as I could.
Seriously, could you be more immature?
42. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
The ipad2 will outsell them all. It has the most number and best quality of apps (see imovie and garage band). It has the sleekest form factor of them all. It has the best customer support. The best battery life. The most reasonably priced. It works well to most users. Better implementation of upgrades. And there's just that something special about it that the rest just doesn't seem to have. The "it" factor.
43. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Ah, so the downthumber was you, Gemini. Thought I could smell your stink. You're exactly the kind of fanboy I despise.
"Sleekest form factor" Yes, because a 4:3 aspect ratio is sleeker than a 16:9 aspect ratio.
"Best customer support" All I see from anyone but you are complaints about Apple's tech support. What happy horses**t is this about Apple not providing free tech support?
"Most reasonably priced" But we don't have any pricing information on the iPad 2, so how can you make this claim?
"Better implementation of upgrades" You mean the 1 a year "Let's improve some minor things and charge the exact same price, while bricking older phones with software updates" implementation?
"Something special" Sorry, I don't see it. I see something special about Android; it has a motif, it has character, it has a personality. iOS is pretty, sure, but it has no personality. It's bland. Like ice.
Even if you didn't downthumb all of our comments, this rampant fanboyism is just plain annoying.
45. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Well Jesus, will you iFanboys stop spamming the downthumb/upthumb comment buttons?! If you don't stop I'll start making freakin' sock accounts to set all ratings back to zero.
46. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
Screen orientation is not "form factor". Forml factor refers to its hardware design. And the ipad2 outshines them all.
Apple gets awards every year for providing the best customer service. They are known for that. Yes, there complains, but so do android users about their devices. Unless of course you can show me a report that shows 100% satisfaction rate among android users. Apple products have been awarded the highest satisfaction rates many times already.
It was stated in the Apple event yesterday that the ipad2 will sell for the same price as the ipad1, which makes it more affordable than the rest.
Better implementation in the sense that, with all those upgrades with the RAM, the A5 dual core processor, the cameras, etc. Apple still was able to make the ipad2 thinner than the first one. It's also able to maintain its 10hr battery life. And most of all, Apple was able to retain its price. That's great upgrade implementation.
The ipad2 has something special because no matter how the others try so hard to be impressive on paper, they still can't outsell the ipad :)
47. Sniggly (Posts: 7297; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
How many sock accounts do you have, Gemini? You're the only iFanboy I see who keeps coming back here.
