Apple iPad 2 replaces paper in the cockpit on United Airlines' flights

0. phoneArena posted on 23 Aug 2011, 18:04

United Airlines has become the first U.S. airline to take paper out of the cockpit and permanently replace it with the Apple iPad; the airline's 11,000 pilots are exchanging flight manuals and charts for an iPad 2 loaded with Jeppesen Mobile Flite Deck, a free app from the App Store...

What happens if IPad is low on battery and you have to refer the manuals.... Be sure to carry charger :)

They would if they were using Android tablets.

Of course they are not having that ipad online

I know not to fly untied now. Screw flying on any airline will rely on tablets for emergencies. Need to restart the engines while 30,000 feet in the air oops the application closed its self.

they are using iPads, not galaxy tabs.

Don't you understand what they are using it for? You can't control the plane through the iPad, it's just a replacement for the paper.

Intresting...:)

Tablets are so unnecessary....

9. ztedac posted on 23 Aug 2011, 18:47 3

hmmmm... i... just hope the pilots are actually flying the plane and not playing angry birds >.>

safety is my biggest concern, not really because of ipad or tablets

hmmm i smell hating in the air... get it in the air..lol....

I can see why they would switch to a tablet but they should def keep a papper manual just in case. I mean if you spill coffe on a papper you can still make out what was written. Now try that with a tablet :rolleys:

Umm, so what do they do in the event of an electromagnetic event, i.e. lightning strike? Also, I can imagine that theft and such would be probable for pilots known to be carrying them around, plus also the aircraft itself for sheep or theives desperate for the oversized ipod.
Also, why the ipad?? There's cheaper tablets that can do what the ipad can. Heck, I'm pretty certain that a Kindle or Nook or any eReader would be able to suit the airline's needs just fine, and I think the shareholders would be much happier knowing the company is buying $100-300 tablets instead of a $500-900 ones

the only thing missing on those planes is a mini bar so the pilots can be in heaven.. get it...... heaven.. dam i am on a roll... jajajajajaja

of course, these electronic devices will be on during sterile cockpit...does this mean that all cabin crew & pssgrs will be able to have elect. devices on as well???

Wouldnt it be cheaper for United to try to get a deal from Hp for Touchsmarts?

18. InspectorGadget80 posted on 23 Aug 2011, 21:29 1

What bout electricity? that would cost them even more money if their airlines start using iPads

My brother flies and the iPad has some amazing apps for pilots. It's way more convenient. Weird logic here that technology on a plane is bad. Well s**t why use computers at all. Let's just go back to no pc's in case something goes wrong.

Eventually, it will happen! and its finally happened

23. Blueberry posted on 24 Aug 2011, 00:41 1

I pads in cockpits are worse than terrorists in planes and I bet planes crashes happen more often with brainless I poop devices...

25. PeterIfromsweden posted on 24 Aug 2011, 05:17 1

Hope they don't turn on the autopilot and play angry birds the rest of the flight...
But seriously, this is a bad idea... what if the ipad runs out of electricity or stops working, what they to then ?
