Oh... all the time, my friend. That's just what I spend ALL of my time thinking about, ya know... how to make dumb comments and baselessly fake-bash Apple all the time just for kicks and giggles! Yeah, and your rebuttal comments make so much sense that they hurt, but what can I say? Apparently, I enjoy the pain.

I am interested to see the ACTUAL sales numbers not Tim Cook's rhetoric! I thought they were short on the new iPad displays & also that they have not sold out of their initial launch stock. Hmm something just doesn’t add up.

I would too. On Friday I went to Best Buy to buy a Galaxy Note and dispose of my iPhone 4S. My Best Buy had a lot of all the models except 16GB Black. They were shocked they were not gone.

My mom got the New iPad and it seems to be like iPad 2 except the camera. Personally there still is no reason fro me to give up my iPad one yet.

Because I want to know how Tim Cook is coming up with these "record weekend" comments. My friend is a General Manager of a Best Buy & they have not sold out of the new iPad.

Also with this shortage of Retina displays & how the initial launch stock is still available, how can a "record weekend" be achieved?

I just want to know to better form an opinion. Don't you want to know?

They probably knew that someone would ask, and so being unprepared to give a proper answer, but still making a glowing (yet baseless) and uber-upbeat comment, could have been their primary strategy to radically raise excitement and morale...

Baseless? You really think Tim Cook doesn't know how the iPad is selling?

posted on 19 Mar 2012, 09:46 4

18. hepresearch (unregistered)

Yes, baseless because I am not assuming that Tim Cook is being entirely honest. I don't doubt that he knows how things are selling right now... but when he decides to give strong hints which are immediately assumed to be over a huge huge unprecedented sales success despite the apparent lack of rushing lines in front of Apple stores and such, and without naming the precise epic success in his hint, it causes me to stand back and wonder what he is really referring to. All he has done is to stir up a lot of positive speculation, which a lot of people are now immediately assuming has to do with uber-positive record sales of the New iPad, but he did not actually say it explicitly. It is being assumed to be such now by just about anyone who is listening, but I'm trying to not jump onboard with assumptions these days.

The fact is that we really have no clue to what record sales event he is referring to regarding the New iPad. He did not tell us, except to throw us the hint at the "epic-ness" of it. I'll wait to hear specifics before I jump to a conclusion.

I think "record sales" is pretty clear cut. The haters on here such as you are jumping all over the fact that it's not completely sold out. What you guys don't consider is that Apple had preorders this time around and also may have produced a lot more iPads to meet demand this time. It's already been confirmed by posters here that their stores got a lot more iPads than previous years.

now, is he considering just the sales of the "new ipad", or the total sales of all ipads over the weekend? The "sales record" could be a spin in any number of directions. With the ipad2 taking a price drop, its sales probably increased. Especially when people cant tell the difference between the 2 and the "new".. why pay the extra money?

drtech you are talking hypothetical’s. Facts are facts, just yesterday I went to look at the new iPad & guess what? They were not sold out. The iPad, the iPad 2, the iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 & the iPhone 4S were all sold out at this time in their respective launches. The new iPad is NOT.

To add more to this, Apple says there are shortages for the Retina display, & the ORIGINAL launch stock is still there in the stores. My friend who is a general manager of a Best Buy said their initial stock delivery is the same as the iPad 2 but they have noticed slower movement than the iPad 2.

hepresearch, has a valid point but your Apple fanaticism immediately calls him an Apple hater. I really don’t understand your logic!

I admit to being wrong for all sorts of things all the time, but that is because I have to acknowledge that I'm human, and I make mistakes. I also have to wait for facts to be fleshed out completely before I can have a legitimate claim to being right or wrong, and when I do find myself in the wrong, I tend to admit it openly. I have done this before on this site in the past... I have had to stick my foot in my mouth and eat humble pie here on quite a few occassions. So, yes, I am always ready to admit when I'm wrong... but I will not admit to wrongness BEFORE the truth is evident. I'm not going to jump the gun on this one, as I still see the possibility that a bunch of us could, in our own ways, be right on this one. If an item of truth being reported can be confirmed properly, then I can accept that fairly easily. So yeah, if I'm wrong I'll be admitting it soon enough... but I will not grovel to you in the process. So, don't get your hopes up for some crazy "I told you all so, and now you HAVE to listen to me" insanity...

This is just a ploy to make Original iPad and iPad 2 owners left out in hopes that they trade-in their old obsolete iPads for the "New" iPad.

I was curious how this launch weekend compared to the same weekend for the iPad2. The stores were not mobbed this time around. I was at the Hillsdale Mall store in San Mateo, CA on Saturday looking at MacBook Pro notebooks, and there was basically no line waiting for iPad3s.

I wouldn't be supprised if Apple didn't meet their sales mark for the new iPad. I bought my iPad 2 a little over a year ago at $500. Even though I really love my iPad and I think the new iPad is a great improvment... I am not spending $500 a year to get the latest and greatest.

I think its wise to skip a generation. Maybe next year I will think about getting the iPad HD 2'ish.

That sounds a lot healthier than what many of my friends and family do when the next iDevice comes out... it is good to hear that you are not letting Apple shame you into buying "the New iPad". I am sure that your existing iPad will work just fine for as long as you need it to. After all, it is still a good product. It just irks me to have to watch my friends and family clamoring to everyone within the sound of their voice that they "have to" get the iPhone 4S or the New iPad just because it is the new thing, and "the best ever" before they have even actually set eyes upon it or really researched it. And then they all go and buy them within a few weeks of each other... it makes me feel ill.

Why does it bother you what other people choose to spend their money on? If they've earned the money and spend it on Apple then that's up to them.

I don't care what they spend their money on... it is the obvious developing (or already developed) addiction that bothers me. I care about these people, they are my friends and family... and now they are pressuring all of our other mutual friends to try to get them into the act as well. I was on facebook just the other day when a friend of mine asked our mutual friends what smartphone options others felt were decent out there right now. I gave my best answer to her, with a little advice on different things and aspects, and I did not knock the iPhone either... I told her that in terms of ease of use and stability, the iPhone has always been a safe bet, but that other platforms have advantages as well (and I pointed out a few, and the conditions [such as decent processor speed and large RAM] under which they could be obtained)... and yet the next of our friends to comment bashed on my analysis, saying that for me to say that anything else other than the iPhone had a chance of being considered was unprofessional, and then saying that as a usability researcher her opinion is "professional" and mine is not... it was a bit of a slap in the face for me. I am not angry, but it did sort of hurt my personal pride in being fairly up-and-up on all things mobile. All but one of our other friends that commented told her to just go with the iPhone 4S and not ask any other questions. The one friend who didn't say "iPhone or nothing" told her to go into the store and play with the phones until she found the one that she liked most (which is fair advice).

I didn't realize how many of my old friends were caught up in the iPhone craze, and how quickly it happened from the last time I talked to many of them. I was taken a bit by surprise. Of my friends and family who I see on a regular basis these days, only a few don't have an iPhone already. My Mom and Dad recently decided that they are saving up to get iPhones, and I think they'll be ready to give up the idea of doing so without extending their contract in the next month or so. Everyone else in my family already has an iPhone. I have four friends at church and a friend in the neighborhood who have Android devices instead of iPhones. I have a dozen or so other friends who don't have smartphones at all, and of course neither my Dad nor I currently have smartphones, but everyone else I know well locally or in my family pretty much has an iPhone already.

It wouldn't bother me too much if it wasn't becoming such an entrenched element of the local culture, to the point that I feel pressured and socially looked-down-upon at times.

Is it possible that so many people are getting iPhones and recommending it because it's a great phone and they're very happy with it? The advantages you pointed out aren't even advantages. More ram and processor speed isn't needed on an iPhone as it runs super smooth.

Again people are loving iOS products because they work great. There's no conspiracy theory or sheep mentality or addiction as you put it.

I did not say that better processor speed or more RAM are advantages in and of themselves... the advantages I was more alluding to are the customization, individual control, and high-power software features on mid-to-high-end Android devices which are not had in as great abundance on the iPhone. Yes, I acknowledged that the iPhone is clearly the easiest to use, and the smoothest for UI experience, but there are those other advantages in other platforms like Windows Phone and Android. I pointed out that better processor speed and more RAM are CONDITIONS whereby one could properly use the advantages of the other platforms... as we know well by now that low-end Android phones can be just a bit on the junky side in many cases and cannot handle as much of the power-features as higher-end Androids and such.

The problem is that some of my friends who have gone iPhone are applying social pressure to the rest of us who either went Android or who don't have an iDevice yet, and it bothers me. The other friends who have also gotten iPhones really don't bother me too much, but they often just agree and smile publicly at the comments of the ones who instigate the social stigmatizing, throwing in their instant agreement that the iPhone is supremely the best ever, and fail to publicly stand up for people in the cross-hairs of it, like me. This has been a lot less of a problem at the church I attend, where the community is not so self-aggrandizing over worldly toys, but here in my neighborhood it has been very much a dividing factor... my Mom, Dad, a few friends and myself have been sort-of put on notice for not "keeping up with the Jones's" in this regard.

Whatever... I take far more heat from iPhone users online than I do from Android users, and in real life I take heat from iPhone users all the time, but almost never from Android users. There is simply no comparison. Your suggestion that Android users are worse in that regard than iPhone users is entertainingly silly, and... ironic?

First of all, I don't understand why you iDiots,er, Apple enthusiasts are even on this site. This is a tech site, mainly trafficked by superusers, not some promo/marketing site for you to congratulate each other on how cool you are because you have "the smartphone for dumb people". Apple is a fine product. However, their limited product line, as well as, the lack of differential from one release to the next is not appreciated by the Phone Arena crowd. To make a disgusting analogy, you're like an African-American on a Neo-Nazi website. Point being, we aren't ever going to understand each other. Let's just leave it at that. Btw, no "Doctor of Technology" is an Apple fan. Geeks like tweaks. Period.

all but the most diehard people normally skip a generation or 2 between devices, especially when they are poppin out so close together and with such minimal upgrades. If it were like the difference between the iphone2g and the i4s in one generation, i could see a massive upgrade push, but this is so minimal most probably wont see the difference and the point.
