Imagine walking into an area deemed too sensitive for mobile devices, and voila, your device is rendered useless...

Maybe yet another reason not to buy iDevices?

It makes me uncomfortable every time I hear the words Apple and patent together.

Finally, I can sit in a cinema and not have to worry about hearing that effing anoying stock iPhone ring tone......
Joy to the world!

Another reason? I think that there already is bunch of reasons why not to buy Apple products.

iCouldn't disagree more, iThink it's perfect for those who are used to and like being controlled. Apple is always looking to iNNovate.

funny you say that when you admitted to have an iphone… i guess you only mention that when you need to eh?
I personally have an android phone, but, while I do sometimes criticize the os, I dont make such hypocritical statements about general users...

so you rather have APPLE SPY or TURN YOUR PHONE off while YOU'RE NOT looking?

Why do you act like it's an either/or situation? They'll do both if that's what they want.

I only use my iPhone 4 (sold the 4S - BIG profit) as a music player with DJ Pro by Algoriddm. And, any data I exchange, I only use wi-fi (like the good Lord, Our sAviOr and DiEty, Steve wanted us to use).
So, there!

True.... What is wrong with America, why are they letting, allowing Apple to patent what does not belong to them!
19. PhoneArenaUser posted on 09 Sep 2012, 18:29 12 2
Maybe because Apple is an American multinational corporation.
20. Lucas777 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 18:31 1 15
how do you know they did not create the technology?
Do you have any indication that they didnt? Obviously since they were granted the patent they did in fact develop something or were the first to patent it...
25. InspectorGadget80 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 19:12 11 1
Apple PATENT the most riduculous stuff.

I remember when this was brought up in 2000 and how countries like Japan has a system inplace where hospitals and certain public places would not have wireless signal. People in AMerica were saying the same thing if one needs to dial 911 how could we? Well I am sure in any faciliaties they have security and employees with phones. It is a real lame excuse to use 911 as and excuse.
Seriously how many times has a d**khead ruin a movie, a meal, and such because they were using their bloody wireless phone? Hell if apple does not use the tech, here's hoping raytheon's electronic warfare suites would come into play. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Big Brother and all that crap...

What I really need is foolproof way to keep my daughter from texting or calling while driving.
21. Lucas777 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 18:37 0 9
yes-- it prevents the phone from texting while the phone is moving at a certain speed… it doesnt prevent all problems such as red-light texting and such though
26. tedkord posted on 09 Sep 2012, 19:50 2 0
Plus, it doesn't distinguish between drivers and passengers. So, she wouldn't be able to text or call if I were driving.

Maybe we can have iPhones deactivated when they get to EARTH!
13. TheRetroReplay posted on 09 Sep 2012, 17:44 3 1
Aren't devices that block cell phone signals illegal for people to own? There was a story that was here where a guy on a bus brought in a signal jammer so his morning commute would be quiet and he was told to stop by the police.
It's considered dangerous because if there's an emergency and cell signals can't get out then the proper authorities can't be called. That's why they don't implement them in schools or anywhere else because if there's an emergency and you phone is being blocked, you're screwed.
16. Lucas777 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 18:26 1 8
i think that this is just technology.. it hasnt been implemented or anything… thats a whole other step than just creating technology
22. kingpet13 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 18:59 6 0
So apple patented something that they can't implement? If you don't have the technology you should not own the patent. Either way, in a good court system this patent is invalid.

14. aikonix posted on 09 Sep 2012, 18:10 3 0
i can see this being bad.... say law enforcement is abusing a civilian and or other illegal activities they want to pursue, we would not be able to record them with their apple-like cell jammers! what the horse crock is THIS!?!!?
23. InspectorGadget80 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 19:12 3 0
So they force on any iPhone user and by shutting down your phone with out telling the user or the OWNER in this case. way to go apple for messing up your consumers. glad i don't own a iProduct they always want to CONTROL of their product even when someone buys it
31. rusticguy posted on 09 Sep 2012, 20:29 2 0
Jailing further. Apple's "patented" forte and business policy. Those who love freedom wouldnt love this. Apple's losing direction i think.

Suprisingly enough, and I cannot believe I am saying this, It is actually a good idea. Not for the weddings or movie theatres and bull**** like that, but more along the lines of Nuclear Reactors or top secret projects related to a high speed, high altitude fighter jet. Imagine this information getting into the wrong hands of a terrorist organization due to a single person with a smartphone that took a picture of it in a top secret meeting and WHAM, the bad guys now have what we have, and that is never good.
In the field of top secret government projects or other such fields, I think it would be an excellent implementation, otherwise, I dont think its a good idea doing this at the movie theatre.
49. meowcenary posted on 10 Sep 2012, 23:12 0 0
I take it you never been to sensitive areas and seen the procedures.
35. nicholassss posted on 09 Sep 2012, 22:13 3 0
I would totally buy in to some sort of something that automatically put your phone to vibrate in a movie theater or at a church or something but to render my phone useless seems like a BS move.
apart from the social and political concerns already stated in the article, what about the safety concerns.
say I'm in a restricted cell phone area and theres an emergency, what then poopy pants?
36. android8 posted on 09 Sep 2012, 23:16 2 0
Its a security measure and should be driven by authorities not by mobile companies.
I think there are already rules set for it, e.g. entering into sensitive defense area would disable your mobile signal automatically.

What is Apple doing now is just preparing for it future decline, when android and windows 8 phone over take them . It will be the same faith as 1980 apple vs Microsoft. Android and windows os will start evolved faster then apple .
Apple know that sooner or later they will decline in sales and value, so they patent every thing they can with they deep pocket. Then later Apple will just become a patent troll.

42. lyndon420 posted on 10 Sep 2012, 07:34 0 0
Would be handy in an emergency. (sarcasm for the iUsers)
Just another restriction from a product I wouldn't want.
Do any ifans actually want this feature?
44. jskrenes posted on 10 Sep 2012, 11:16 0 0
The technology pretty much exists where I could have a friend set up his phone at a sporiting event or concert and nearly instantly broadcast a feed to my TV. So I can see how it is practical. But I don't like it.
45. jaytai0106 posted on 10 Sep 2012, 11:44 0 0
Great concept, but in real life would need years of adjusting the real software to make it works great. Beside, the GPS in our phone isn't very accurate yet, so a lot of time your phone would disable itself when it gets too close to those zones. But who knows.

I don't see the big deal people that have Sprint have been losing signal as soon as they entered a building. and look at them happy as rabbits
