Apple granted patent for NFC mobile payment system

0. phoneArena 28 Aug 2012, 21:14 posted on

We know that Apple patents are something of a hot topic these days, and no doubt the comment section here will be filled pretty quickly with people complaining and spitting anger, but that won't change how the USPTO does business. And today, the USPTO granted Apple a patent for an NFC mobile payment system...

I know what you are thinking Michael, But again with the various possibilities and the simplistic look of it this might as well be another troll patent

I still don't get how can a company Apply for a patent they might not even use 3 years after they filled it up, so we have a deck of patents sitting on the floor waiting for someone to accidentally infringe on them, I think that's too convenient, also another "software patent" great.....

This just proves that the patent system is broken - much like the election process of America.

I think NFC will become a great addition to mobiles in the future. However, for NFC to be utilised to its full potential, a company like Apple needs to adopt it.

No matter what anyone thinks about Apple, if their phones use NFC, it'll mean that millions and millions of people around the world will have an NFC device in their pocket. Once that happens, businesses and developers will sit up and notice. They'll start to take it more seriously and design ways for it to be implemented into our lives as a tool not just a gimmick.

For all I know, Android or Windows may design a more intuitive NFC system, but for it to become successful, Apple needs to on board.

I agree 100%. Without Apple, it may be extremely difficult for the technology to take off and mature.

"It is simply a patent for the GUI of a potential app that one day may find its way onto the iPhone"

I am going to patent a Teleport. I dont have a working model yet, but I have a potential wardrobe that I am working on and one day it may find its way to become Teleport.

If anybody else comes first with the actual Teleport I will sue them because I filed the patent way before them.

I dont see anything in those patents that does not scream "generic, common sense set up". How are you supposed to format your NFC screen so it does not interfere with that patent? Apple is simply the world's largest patent troll taking advantage of a severely broken system to bleed the competition dry or to ban it all together.

The good news is that there is literally 100's of thousands of "prior art" examples of a payment screen that will negate that if apple tries to bully peeps with it.

Stuff like this proves beyond a doubt that our patent system is severely broken and on life support.
