On Friday, Apple filed two designs of the Apple iPad with China's Patent and Trademark Office in an attempt to trademark the tablet's looks in the country; one black and white and one color image was sent under International Class 009 which covers computers, peripherals and the like in an attempt to avoid last year's patent battle with Proview over the use of the iPad name...

Chinese legal system is much different than that of US and EU. On top of that, Chinese domestic manufacturers are supported and even subsidized by the government. Apple is well aware of this.

They just handed over the designs to every competitor in China!

So... just filed for but not granted yet? How long does the process usually take in China to be granted a patent?
Given that it's China, good luck to Apple trying to litigate against any company there they feel infringes on their patent. If thermonuclear war isn't working out so well for them in the Western world, I'd love to see how it pans out in the Far East.
I guess that only leaves litigation against non-Chinese companies. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tim Cook visit and the iPhone financing options isn't simply a ploy to cement a "most favored nation" bargain with the Chinese government: Apple finances their devices in China to make them appear more affordable, Apple won't litigate against Chinese manufacturers in foreign markets because they *license* the designs filed in the Chinese PTO keeping the terms privy only to themselves... and in exchange, when Apple sues a foreign competitor in China it won't be tossed out of court as is happening in basically the rest of the world. Outside of the US that is.

What a great way to boost their image in China! I mean they're doing so well already, providing gainful employment to thousands of Chinese, trying to make a deal with China Mobile, I'm sure tying up their legal system with their never ending bullsh*t will go over just as well as it did everywhere else in the world.

Well Goophone has patents to lot of these things i guess ... apple has just filed ... filing doesn't mean granted. So lets wait and watch :)
