Apple caves in under carriers' threats about the iPhone, to have embedded SIM card only in the iPad

Apple has stopped plans for built-in programmable SIM card in the iPhone because of European carriers' threats to stop subsidizing it. These plans are still on for the next generation iPad, though, since the tablet is sold full price, without any subsidies...

It's not a new version with a mute switch. It's iOS 4.2. It turns the lock switch into a silent/audible switch identical to the iPhone 4's switch.
