Apple at risk of losing its cool, says Wozniak
0. phoneArena 20 Feb 2013, 15:05 posted on
Apple is in danger of losing its cool, according to co-founder Steve Wozniak, who says that he would welcome the release of the rumored Apple iWatch which would put all off the functions of an Apple iPhone and Apple iPad on a wristwatch; Wozniak also predicts that Windows Phone will gain "critical mass" but that BlackBerry will have to switch to the Android OS...

for me Apple lost its cool with the launch of the iphone 4s and its later products...same stuff being repeated three times with no change....time to nut up Apple

I typically buy my electronic devices after a long, thorough review. IMO, electronics devices are money sink-holes.
I decided to buy my 32GB iPad Mini the moment I picked it up at the Apple Store. That device made my iPad 2 look heavy. The iPad Mini also came with Siri and voice dictation that was lacking in the iPad 2. All my apps transfer to the iPad Mini, which was nice.
The iPad Mini fits inside my jacket pocket and it's HUGE display puts the Samsung Note and other phablets to shame. After the iPad mini, it doesn't make sense for me to buy a smartphone with a large display.

My samsung galaxy tab 7.7 put my ipad 3 to shame, it receive call, text, while i work on a spreadsheet and browser the web for information. I never have to carry a phone and an ipad again.
One device for all my computing needs, plus movie and gaming during lunch break.
53. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
I was talking about display SIZE. iPad Mini has so much display area versus a phablet.
Now, you want us to believe the galaxy tab 7.7 display size puts the iPad 3's display size to shame.
Oh please and go troll somewhere else.

I have a serious question:
What did you think about phones with bigger screens....before the iPad Mini?
51. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
I bought the Moto Triumph on VM (it has a 4.1" screen) and cost $300 out the door. I wanted to test the bigger screen against my iPod Touch 4G's 3.5" screen.
When the Nexus 4 came out, I was ready to replace my Moto Triumph. However, the iPad Mini changed all that.
My thoughts about bigger screens is that it make sense if you just want to carry one device. Today, I bring my 4G mobile hotspot with my iPad Mini if I know I am going somewhere with no or slow Wifi.
I and data-centric so voice or text has little value for me. My friends prefer e-mails over text so the iPad Mini makes the most sense for me. I am keeping the Moto Triumph since it only cost me $25 a month.
54. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
One more thing, the Nexus 4 was hard to get. If I had to get cell phone today, it will probably be the LG Optimus L9 for $200 at Wal-Mart on t-mobile with 5 GB of 4G data for $30 a month.
To answer your question, about 4.5" to 4.7" would be about the biggest display size I would buy if the iPad Mini didn't come out.
Today's phablets would not appeal to me. Even 5" phone would be too big.
I have no problems buying an android handset and after seeing the collapse in resale value on my Moto Triumph, I am going to spend as least as possible since that hand set would also not hold its value.

Sounds like someone is trying to justify the tiny 3.5" screen they've had to settle with (4" if you finally upgraded to the iP5). Sounds seriously like buyer's remorse.
Simple truth is you won't carry a tablet with you everywhere, but likely will a phone.
52. ardent1 (Posts: 2000; Member since: 16 Apr 2011)
Aeries, you make dumb comments.
I have an android handset. I never owned an iPhone so I don't have buyer's remorse.
As for android devices, they don't hold their value as well as Apple products. My Moto Triumph is practically worthless. My iPod Touch 4G 32G that I bought about a year earlier than the Triumph has much better resale value.
Do us a favor and don't make dumb comments because you make dumb assumptions.
58. Aeires (unregistered)
I'd never have guessed you owned anything but Apple the way you vehemently defend them.
You should look at your own comments about being dumb. Still laughing at your Walmart comment below.

Ardent1, you must have too much money and don't know how to put them to good use! In truth, for $429 (32GB iPad mini), you can buy a Barnes & Nobles of either 7" HD (1440x900) or the 8.9" HD+ (1920x1280). Both offer much higher resolution than the crippled 7.9" iPad mini (1024x768). With the 7" Nook HD, you shall have US$200 left to pay for a 32GB microSD card for ~US$24, a cover for less than US$50, and at least US$120 to spare. Further, the 7" Nook HD give you a true wide-screen movie watching experience, the ability to see everything on any website (HTML5, Flash support). iPad mini always either chops off the left and right portion of the screen when you are viewing the new Hobbit movie or Titanic, or gives you a very thick upper and lower black strips. Further, the pocket of most raincoat or jacket is not big enough for iPad min, but no such problem with the 7" Nook HD. If you already plan to use a carrying bag for the 8" iPad mini, the bag is certainly big enough for the 8.9" Nook HD+ and then you are still left with US$80 to spare after the cover and the 16GB uSD card. In fact, with the Nook HD or HD+, you can buy a few of the 16GB microSD cards and store into each card different movies or books. With iPad mini, you really have to make hard decision to pre-store some, but not all, of the media contents desired.
So, why would you want to pay so much more for a piece of out-dated hardware, and subject yourself to the lacking capabilities (no true wide-screen movie watching, no uSD for user friendliness, no Flash support)? Are you nuts, or you simply have too much money to throw away? Why don't you just buy a Nook HD or HD+ (better featured and spec'ed than iPad mini) and pay for a field trip for your children or relatives?

The mini is not a phablet, retard, therefore your comparrison to the Note II sucks.

Apple ceased being cool when they launched the imac
42. gmracer1 (Posts: 646; Member since: 28 Dec 2012)
Amen to that, brotha!
Hell, IMO, Apple never had the 'cool' factor--it was morel like a 'hype' factor.
47. Ameliahunter (Posts: 26; Member since: 15 Jan 2013)
Apple lost its cool when it released the iPhone 4S with stupid Siri, and then the iPhone 5... Both phones are not competitive, no matter what Apple's devoted fans say.

How can Woz know about being cool.. as far as I remember he has never been cool to begin with.
31. Mxyzptlk (Posts: 10620; Member since: 21 Apr 2012)
Making irrelevant statements about the company you founded isn't cool.

"Making irrelevant statements about the company you founded isn't cool."
Well, If anyone knows best about Apple, don't you think it would be Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak? Jobs is gone and Woz is showing concern for Apple. I don't find this irrelevant. He maybe a little off the wall, but he does speak relevancy. He isn't saying Apple is dead, but he does bring up points worth listening to.
Let me ask you a question Myx. Just how serious are you about Apple anyway? You purchasing Apple products and cheerleading for it doesn't guaranty viable support. All it does is show that you brush issues under the carpet and care nothing about the essentials of retaining company integrity as it slowly loses trust.
Woz is concerned, Wallstreet is concerned, many iphone supporters are becoming concerned and YOU should be concerned as well. I'm not saying you have to like another OS platform. I'm merely suggesting that recognizing certain issues constitutes responsible support for a product you love.
7. tedkord (Posts: 9942; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
Woz is the epitome of cool. Again, without Woz, Steve Jobs would have been a mildly successful used car salesman.
28. suyatisuyaminggat (Posts: 3; Member since: 20 Feb 2013)
I think steve would be snake oil salesman... Lol
Or maybe become a monk and the next dalai lama (based on his interest in religion and able to have so many shheeeeppp)
10. PhenomFaz (Posts: 1235; Member since: 26 Sep 2012)
dude do you onow even what cool is?
Woz is pretty cool...you not so much
16. rusticguy (Posts: 2828; Member since: 11 Aug 2012)
Wonder where's your clone myxpyxtyx .. who calls him "nutty" ... without him there would have been no Apple to begin with so he definitely knows more about being cool. Without him SJ would be a real estate agent at best ...
29. gallitoking (Posts: 4718; Member since: 17 May 2011)
ok you are confusing what cool means.. and he is not cool ok.,.. Woz is smart but he is not cool I know is hard for you to understand but try to keep up...
34. Aeires (unregistered)
If Woz said Android sucked you and Mxy would be saying he's the coolest person on the planet. Hypocrites, both of you.
44. quakan (Posts: 1351; Member since: 02 Mar 2011)
Well if he said Android wasn't cool, you all would slam him. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.
59. Aeires (unregistered)
Nope. Tons of people respect and like Woz, regardless of what OS he's speaking about. Stop clutching at straws.

"Apple at risk of losing its cool..."
Apple already did that few years ago! :)
5. Tsepz_GP (Posts: 974; Member since: 12 Apr 2012)
Very true, Apple are fast losing their cool factor to companies like Samsung, it's about time Apple changed the iPhone design and also overhauled iOS, its looked pretty much the same since the OG iPhone.
6. Nathan_ingx (Posts: 3606; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
'Cool' is a word i will never associate with Apple. Good or nice is enough...cool is too hot for Apple to handle!
57. Ameliahunter (Posts: 26; Member since: 15 Jan 2013)
Well, but many people buy the overpriced iPhones and iPads just because they think they are cool...
9. ChafedBanana (Posts: 367; Member since: 20 Sep 2011)
If Apple updates the design of iOS and the iPhone etc., how will they do so and still differentiate it from Android? Make the screen bigger? Offer more customization? Androids already do and Android already does. So why wouldn't I just buy an Android? Apple should just stick to coming what they do best. Offering a simple, basic smartphone that's easy to use. First time smartphone buyers love iPhones and they don't need to be any more complicated than they already are for the old folks.
15. Whateverman (Posts: 3250; Member since: 17 May 2009)
Problem is, there are less and less first time smartphone buyers everyday. And Android is taking the lions share of those first time buyers. Then you have those bored with getting the exact same phone every year. There are of course far more iOS users who don't mind it at all, but iOS is extremely long in the tooth. Something needs to be added to the OS that will allow it to remain a simple point an shoot OS, but also have some customization for those looking to leave the platform. I've had many conversations with its users who are only still using iphones because they've invested so much money in iTunes. But i think once more people realize they can take their music, shows, movies and get most of their old apps on other ecosystems, it's a wrap for the iPhone unless Apple can come up with another games changer.

The thing about android devices are that they are cheap -- anyone with $40 to $60 can buy an android device today. If you step up to $80, the range of choices increase.
Everytime, I go to Wal-Mart, I am always amazed at how fast those $80 android are flying out the door. People buy androd devices because of the low prices.
The next ou go to Target, Walmart, or Radio Shack, just count the plethora f cheap android devices in the blister packs.
22. joey_sfb (Posts: 5257; Member since: 29 Mar 2012)
Which is why they are becoming the new OS standard and developer take notice.
Plus a true multitasking kernel allow you to do basic thing like downloading a file from dropbox/web while looking up for information on the web via VPN while still talking to him or her on the same device during an oversea trips.
Not possible with my current iOS devices.

"People buy androd devices because of the low prices. "
Right...low prices didnt help Palm, Win Mo and BB in 2008, 2009, 2010.
Ppl also buy Android because its good. How come this is a hard concept for some of you to understand?

Ardent1, why do Apple owners have such a problem with this?
33. Whateverman (Posts: 3250; Member since: 17 May 2009)
Cheap, yet still way more advanced than the iPhone 5. Android has the iOS fanboys running scared and it's only gonna get worse. The only thing iOS fanboys have to hold onto is "mine cost more, that must mean its better". But as most of the world has proven quarter after quarter, Android is the preferred OS, period. Paint the picture however you like, but people are picking $80 Androids over free iPhone 4's and $100 4S's for a reason. Many of us paid more for our Androids than you paid for your iPhone as well, so that can't be the only reason Android is spanking iOS.
37. jroc74 (Posts: 5980; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
On that note....I paid retail for 2 high end Android phones at launch.
And I might pay for a 3rd at retail this year.
I will let him do the math....

I agree with this.
In a way...I'm glad and not glad Android is popular now. lol.
Although....Windows for PC's. Its popular and also widely available. Android might be fine being popular.

Woz is only "cool" to droiders cuz he's kinda speaking out against apple rite now. Once apple launches new "cool" products, and he's talking "cool",about apple again the droiders will b all over him, and he won't be so "cool" anymore... Watch.
40. Aeires (unregistered)
I don't think so. People who are into tech like Woz because he's all about the tech, not just branding. Tons of people hated Jobs but Woz has always been liked because he's a likable person.

The day blackberry offiicially switches to andriod I will ditch anyything blackberry and go back to symbian.. Woz you are very wrong for saying that, you don't know the future and moreover why will blackberry switch to android when already BB10 comes with andriod Java Virtual Machine bundled with it? With time when developers begin to realise the power in BBB10 the will start developing apps from scratch strictly for BB10 and every andriod ported apps ever made will gradually be removed from blackberry world.. PSA I have owned all samsung's android flagship devices right from the the original galaxy s and end up selling them on amazon.. I curently own the galaxy note 2, blackberry 9900 and two nokia lumia 800 and all this phones are international factory unlocked phones bought at full prices.. Am waiting on the BBQ10 anyway no matter how long it will take to be released.

why all the hate for android? technology is here to serve us not us to apple, google or blackberry.
I am painfully aware that i buy every device i own.
