Again, most of the major things in this release are ripped off of other OSes. It's shameful, really. I foresee a TON of lawsuits.

It seems that Google, BB, and Apple have all been borrowing from one another for the latest OS updates. I think it's good that they have all seen weaknesses in their OS's and are acting accordingly.
61. ayephoner posted on 06 Jun 2011, 16:35 3 3
Sniggly, you're absurd. first, apple claimed very little today to be done first (admittedly, they were almost certainly wrong when they did). they claimed they have done it better, which is yet to be seen, but very believable. second, apple and their customers could care less about originality, they want functionality. they are both just happy that these steps are being made. third, you're a salesman? i hope you had today off, because you've been on here posting about a competitor's product to people you dont know or see ever. go get to work.
89. Sniggly posted on 06 Jun 2011, 18:45 4 3
Yeah. I had today off.
And fyi, it's not so much whether Apple claims originality on these concepts; it's the fact that they sue EVERYONE for doing stuff they did first, and now they're blatantly ripping off of their four major competitors in the OS business.
97. SomeGuy (unregistered) posted on 06 Jun 2011, 19:01 2 1
Google's latest update took a lot of things from Apple, and Apple's latest update took a lot from Google. They saw a weakness in their product and they changed it. Google did nothing really new or interesting with 2.3 or 3.1, but I think they are great updates, because they gave Android things that iOS already was capable of. Can we agree on that?
PS> How much do clothes cost in the matrix? :P

sniggly, do u know how much shit ur precious android copied from google... the whole fucking os is one huge copy... look at the app screen... cud it get any more similar? and dont say it has to be the same... wp7 obviously found a different way...
ios 5 is very nice. i think the notifications are spot on with the easy access from the loackscreen... and it seems to show a lot of detail
137. protozeloz posted on 07 Jun 2011, 07:57 2 1
the app screen is the thing you use to call it a copy?
then guess what evry phone is a copy then
-maemo app drawer
-play book app drawer
-meego app drawer
its that its convenient to have app on that array.... also only Samsung phones have the app tray similar to the iPhone overall look.... winmo is not the rule... just the exception a really old exception I have to say....
152. Lucas777 posted on 07 Jun 2011, 20:54 0 0
haha ya i meant apple.. my bad... and ya, those are pretty much copies too... i mean, with the things sniggle is saying, it applies as general as that... but honestly none of them look as similar as android and ios...

so you telling me that phones like P990 and P1 copied iOS?

Is it shameful android uses a webkit browser and pinch to zoom? What exactly is ripped off? Their offering similar services and their own way.
Let me get this straight. You bash Apple for say not offering better notitications. Then when they do, you say it's shameful?
Other than going bankrupt is there anything Apple can do that will make you happy?
34. Sniggly posted on 06 Jun 2011, 14:59 6 5
Webkit is an open source standard that Apple did not invent. Pinch to zoom is a functionality that cannot be bested in terms of ease of use or practicality.
The entire functionality of the notification tray, sans a few features, was ripped off of Android.
The split keyboard was ripped off of Windows 8.
The camera lock screen access was introduced by Windows phone 7.
Proprietary instant messaging was offered by everyone else before Apple.
Cloud services were introduced by Google and Amazon before Apple.
Apple could've at least tried for something completely new and different. I nodded my head a few times at different things that made sense, like being able to go to specific notifications from the lock screen directly. But their major changes were really nothing new.
36. remixfa posted on 06 Jun 2011, 15:04 6 4
actualy, there is a split keyboard for android already. a friend has it on his Xoom.. it works really well.
windows phone 7's camera access is by the camera button... at any time, even if the screen is off.. not by lock screen.
iMessage or whatever its being called is crap. With BBM the biggest draw was not because u could BB to BB and be all super cool, it was because u could do it over the internet connection and thus not have to have a messaging add on for your BB. It used to be a major selling point. This "imessage" does no more than the group text app on the Tmobile Sidekick4g.
sniggly is right on the cloud services
and taco, its not that we'd be happy that apple failed. Hell, i lvoe the competition even though i hate the company. Its that their new notification system is a DIRECT RIPOFF of Android. The same pulldown with the same set notifications, weather and time that android has had since the beginning.
Apple wants to sue everyone for even looking their way while they steal all that they possibly can from everyone else.
iOS5- For those of you that really wish you had an Android but are too tied into apple to leave.

lmao, apple fans will have an android that cant use flash player.
47. taco50 (banned) posted on 06 Jun 2011, 15:26 3 2
There's a bunch of stuff android copied from iOS also. So why is it ok for android to copy iOS, but not the other way around. iMessage will also let you message free without using text so I don't see your point.
Android copied pinch to zoom, app store, web browser, spring board layout, design on many devices. Copy and paste function is also copied.
Apple needed better notifications and android had a good model so Apple's is similar. So what?
50. Sniggly posted on 06 Jun 2011, 15:41 5 4
Already explained pinch to zoom and why no other approach made sense.
App stores existed before Apple's did.
Webkit is an open source standard-NOT Apple's invention by a long shot.
Apple's design is minimalistic, meaning its basic physical design is hard not to duplicate. Only one series can be argued as a copycat, and that's some models of the Galaxy S.
I don't know what you mean by a springboard layout.
See the problem here is that you and other iFanboys have bitched about these similarities countless times, but whenever Apple does it, suddenly it's okay.
Android's notification functionality is great, and it's flattering that Apple is copying it. But it's irritating because it's still being repackaged by them as innovation when it's clearly not.
66. E.N. posted on 06 Jun 2011, 16:53 1 3
Let's get real. Apple definitely copied from Android but to say that Android hasn't copied from Apple is pretty crazy.
'Pinch to zoom is a functionality that cannot be bested in terms of ease of use or practicality." Well yeah that's kinda true so that means its okay to copy? Apple didn't make pinch to zoom so easy to use and practical so that its competition can copy the feature. What's the point of innovation if it gives you no competitive advantage?
If Apple didn't put pinch zoom on the iPhone, I doubt that there would be pinch zoom and touch screen phones today. I'm sure there would have eventually been some other multi-touch gestures, but it would have probably been very different.
The split keyboard was from Windows 8 but don't Android and Palm have similar features? I don't know why it's such a big deal now that it's on the iPad.
Yes, application stores technically existed before the iPhone, but Apple pretty much redefined it and changed what a mobile application store should be like and Android tried (and is still trying) to replicate it and its success.
Webkit is open source but what Apple did to make mobile Safari was pretty different and novel, and Android, Microsoft, and Palm soon followed and created their own based on what Apple did.

Owned once again sniggly. Webkit was developed by Apple. Do your research troll.
145. protozeloz posted on 07 Jun 2011, 12:53 1 0
yes apple used the KHTML software library it means they took their project an created their own version called webkit
but lets read the whole article piece please? shall we?
''WebKit was originally derived by Apple Inc. from the Konqueror browser's KHTML software library for use as the engine of Safari web browser, and has now been further developed by individuals from the KDE project, Apple Inc., Nokia, Google, Bitstream, Torch Mobile, Samsung and others.[3]. Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, and some other Unix-like operating systems are supported by the project.[4]
WebKit's WebCore and JavaScriptCore components are available under the GNU Lesser General Public License, and the rest of WebKit is available under a BSD-style license.[5]''
the web kit that apple took from Konkeror's project its now being taken by other for further development from other companies, not that is being copied.... the project its open for anyone to do as they please with it

exactly Apple took it and developed the webkit browser for safari. Then Apple open sourced it so anyone can use it. Yes Apple the "closed" company open sourced this browser and allowed companies like google, palm and rim to use the browser.
from the same wiki page
On June 7, 2005, Safari developer Dave Hyatt announced on his weblog that Apple was open-sourcing WebKit (previously, only WebCore and JavaScriptCore were open source) and opening up access to WebKit's CVS tree and the bug Database tool.[13] This was announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2005 by Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet.

the project was taken from a project that uses a GNU Lesser General Public License, you know what that means? apple simply does not have a choice but to release it to the public and let anyone do as they please because of the copyleft licence and others, when apple had created the webkit they just cant hold it for them

I find it funny that you always come into Apple articles and talk shit, then when we do it on the Android articles, you and your little bitch friends get all butt-hurt, I still wonder what the real cause of your guys' hate towards Apple is, is it maybe because your mommy can't afford to buy you an iPad??? Is that why Sniggly??

Yikes, Apple Fanboy, you used the exact same stupid insult another dude in this forum did. Are you that unoriginal?
I don't say anything about you and other morons popping into Android articles. I think it's fun to verbally whoop all of your asses.
I've made it quite clear why I dislike Apple, many many times. It's very simple: their business practices. I don't like the way Apple has treated consumers, I don't like the way they treat competitors, and I certainly don't like the way they treat their business partners.
Can I make it ANY clearer, Fanboy?

That's because you don't pay attention, Lucas. Almost everywhere I have said how much I dislike the way Apple treats their customers, competitors, and business partners. From lawsuits to lying about issues their products have to leaning on anyone involved in the making of their products to ensure that they get the lion's share of all of the money to be had from their products.
I have named all of these as issues, Lucas. I have gone into great detail. But again, as usual, you don't pay attention.

There were/are split keyboards before Windows8... my Viewsonic gTablet has it, and it makes typing so much easier... especially since my 10.1" tab dwarfs the iRag, can't imagine trying to type on that thin little POS
103. Lucas777 posted on 06 Jun 2011, 20:06 1 1
how was the split keyboard ripped off.. it came out like a day before... its not like apple wud have been able to create it in a day... oh and microsoft hasnt even been able to release it... they have basically just said the idea... whoever is able to execute first gets the credit... i can announce a shitload of stuff and its not like i get the copyright...
and what is wrong with using ideas from other oses... is it worng or something? other oses use enough from apple...
and google and amazon cloud services fail compared to icloud...
and honestly, what do they need more? they announced all this new stuff... but idk what really else there is?

ya... all i am saying is they didnt rip off microsoft.. and for below
first, apple didnt say u cudnt sue them... if they are taking the risk of copying, which i dont think they are cause idk if google has a copyright... they are making themselves susceptible
and icloud is very important for a few reasons-- all apps are synced, all photos are synced, all music is synced with no lag, and all documents are synced... alll this is done automatically... oogle doesnt offer this...
142. beatlesfan posted on 07 Jun 2011, 09:41 1 1
How do you know that icloud is so great? Have you used it? As tons of people have already stated, the issue is not that Apple is directly ripping off Android so much as it is that Apple sues everyone under the sun for "ripping" off them and then they go and do it. It's pure hypocracy.
150. protozeloz posted on 07 Jun 2011, 17:00 1 1
my cloud services do as much as what apple just offers and they are all if not most from Google (except for music) I just need to sing into my account to get my apps, contacts mail and even pictures if i wanted to all done with a breeze so I don't see why they are a fail compared to iCloud

Moto's price points weren't outrageous for what the XOOM offered. It's just that there wasn't a lower end/lower memory option available for the XOOM.
Why do people persist with this "the XOOM was too expensive!" bullshit?
44. jbash posted on 06 Jun 2011, 15:15 0 0
how did ASUS pull it off 3 months later?
45. Sniggly posted on 06 Jun 2011, 15:22 2 2
Because ASUS is in the computer parts biz, which probably works better than when all of your hardware in the past was for phones. Motorola had to do some serious R and D, and set out to build a tablet of complete awesomeness.
The EEE Pad probably has cheaper parts, was built cheaper, and didn't require quite so much R and D.
Granted, we may see a price drop on the XOOM, or a cheaper XOOM 2. But the fact remains that the XOOM only seemed expensive because it was being directly compared to the cheapest iPad and iPad 2.
71. remixfa posted on 06 Jun 2011, 17:08 2 0
sniggly, they are made with nearly identical parts
to put it in motos own words " we can charge this much because it's LTE capable". They priced themselves out of the game. on that one. It was just a bad move.
BTW, how did Android copy iOS tablets? An iOS tablet is just a frikking super sized ipod. Thats all it is. Android Honeycomb tablets are far and away superior in every aspect.
Sales dont equate superiority to features. That is a long stretch and a farce.
