Apple accuses Samsung of copying its icons as well

Do Samsung Galaxy devices look like the iPhone? Apple argues some pretty generic features accusing Samsung of making a rectangular device. But while that might sound absurd, the real point is that Apple is trying to convince the court…

For anyone that thinks that this is "proof" that Samsung copied apple, and Apple came up with this design all on their own.. I want you to go find pictures of... well.. ANY phone.. even a 5 yr old flip phone. See that phone call icon on the button? A green phone? Yea, its the EXACT same icon as found on the iphone, samsung, lg, and pretty much every other phone in existence. The only difference is that instead of the phone being green, the background is green. OOOOOOH. so original. Get over it. Apple is a bunch of whiners and over litigators and thats where it ends.

More irrefutable proof. We should rename Samsung to Samesung.

then i guess nokia can sue apple for that yes ? nokia has used a green coloured phone icon for years before apple did

Hey Cyan3boN they are actually the wealthiest and greatest company in the world. Just wanted to correct your error so you don't look bad among your friends here. You are welcome!

no need to cry folks...
it is clear as day that samsung copied the designs, images, and colors of the icons... even though the settings icon is a different looking "gear" it still is inspired by using a "gear" why not use a wrench or screw driver for the settings icon?
thats the whole point of why they are accused of copying... notes icon could have had a white piece of paper with a pencil instead of copying the same design and color scheme...
i was on the side of thinking these law suits were ridiculous but now that i see this... and i understand apple's claim more...
samsung did what they had to do to get to the top! good for them but at the same time... they COPIED...

That's what our fandroids don't get. If you take any one of these things by themselves it's not copying, but when you put it all together it is copying!
You take the same shape and body as Apple with a single home button and then you copy UI elements like bounce effect and icons, copy Apple's packaging and proprietary charging port.
I mean this is really blatant. Then we have posters here claiming they don't see any copying. Really?! Take off your fandroid blinders for a minute.
62. good2great (Posts: 953; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
i mean did they REALLY have to use a flower to represent the photo gallery icon??? come on Samsung... smh #facepalm
Taco i really want the judge to throw the case out... i would hate to see samsung or apple lose but this is 100% copying...lol
i mean i dont blame them... you have to do "something" to create a buzz for your mobile products. haha
82. EclipseGSX (Posts: 1331; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
100% huh, they look different to me but you have your apple glasses on obviously
94. good2great (Posts: 953; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
man you can clearly see they copied the whole idea...
its not hard... i'm no apple fan or samsung fan... but anybody with business sense can see they were very impressed with the popularity of the iphone that they wanted their products to have a apple-like influence in appearance...
dont be a hater all your life dawg...
132. doublehammer (Posts: 75; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
If A is not copying.. and B is not copying and C is not copying..
then A + B + C = not copying. You cant add up to a sum greater than the individual parts.
dont fall for his false logic.

spot on i couldnt of said better myself. thT is the point ive tryed to make this whole time. ive been in the cell phone business since this whole smart phone craze started. And from the beginning I've made it clear that Samsung gala,y phones looked a little too much like the iPhone. It's obvious. I don't understand why people don't just accept the facts. Here you go. What more do they want? It's non sense talking to these fandroids. Thank you. You are a good man my friend.

Jesus Samsung used the iTunes logo for their music app!! I forgot about that lol. Can it be anymore blatant?!
61. fervid (Posts: 167; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
Pretty sure music notes and CDs have been around for some time and used in icons long before iPhones.
63. good2great (Posts: 953; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
dude they only did it because it was on the iphone first...
there are hundreds of ideas samsung could've come up with the represent the music icon...
71. fervid (Posts: 167; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
And Apple did it because Windows Media Player and thousands of other apps did it...

Do you think that people are so stupid to confuse an iphone for a Samsung,Apple?
The ipad 3 is a great device for sure, but the iphone 4(S) is a middle range and fragile phone and you know that Iphone 5 would not be able to compete with s3 or the Nexus or even the One X.That's why you want Samsung to pay you for each of its device(inspired from Microsoft).
BTW:Taco, you're a little noob and everybody knows that.
74. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
I don't know if I'd talk about fragile considering the SIII's build issues.
97. AppleWho (banned) (Posts: 57; Member since: 06 Aug 2012)
ok, let us talk about the captivate's build...the DROID RAZR's build...the Nexus 7 build - all superior to iPRODUCTS...
57. samystic (Posts: 185; Member since: 25 Mar 2012)
not an Apple fan (infact amused to see it's marketing strategies to compel 'new' things on users) but i have to agree to Apple for accusing Samsung for copying things rather shamelessly... hell Samsung has copied Symbian as well... wait before you say anything, compare Symbian features like 'standby screen' and 'contact shortcuts' on its basic phones... they are photocopy of Nokia's ideas...
would love to have a discussion on this
59. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Samesung has long been know for copying competitor products. It's amusing to see fanboys deny the obvious.
78. samystic (Posts: 185; Member since: 25 Mar 2012)
and yeah i love Galaxy S3... but honestly does that blind person who gave me a thumbs down is a crybaby not ready to accept reality... can someone honest enough stand up and urge Nokia to sue Samsung like there no tomorrow? and remind Nokia to rethink Meego?
60. fervid (Posts: 167; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
The only one even close is the phone icon and everyone looks like that, even Windows Phones. That is like saying anyone using an !, ?, yellow triangle, book, floppy disk, CD, music notes, folder, word bubble, or stop sign is copying Windows icons.
65. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
So using a flower for the photo gallery is a coincidence and using Apple's iTunes logo for their music app is just a coincidence?
114. jroc74 (Posts: 3458; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Is it exactly the same? Yes or no....
Apple has the rights to ANY type of flower or gear or notepad, etc?
69. good2great (Posts: 953; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
windows don't use those icons to sell their products... thats the difference...
trust me i want to sweep this under the rug with you too but this is too petty for samsung to be doing... how hard is it to come up with a different logo?
look at the contacts icon...hahaha same damn design... just orange...
126. jroc74 (Posts: 3458; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
When did Samsung use these icons to sell theres?
I dont remember one Samsung commercial or ad that focused on these icons....
77. AlanB412 (Posts: 17; Member since: 23 Jul 2012)
This is stupid. I wish Apple would just come right out and sue Google instead. We all know they're the real target. Half of these things can be generalized to Android operating systems as a whole anyways. This roundabout bulls**t Apple is doing by suing everyone and their mother company is just annoying.
81. shuaibhere (Posts: 593; Member since: 07 Jul 2012)
i can show u the same phone icon in my 2004 Samsung flip model phone.... and windows uses the same sunflower icon for different purpose..... all this thinks are stupid by apple... i accept that Samsung was inspired by apple...now apple too inspired by Samsung to make a 7 inch tab...
apple thinks its consumers are so mad to get confuse between iphone and sgs...
92. talon95 (Posts: 50; Member since: 31 Jul 2012)
If Apple has trademarked their logos that's great. But that's also very specific. They probably couldn't just have a square green phone icon because it was already being used so they made the handset a particular shape and gave the corners a particular radius and then added the diagonal color banding. All of this makes it theirs, no adding or subtracting. So if you want to make something similar that's fine, You'll need more than 1 pixel of differentiation but as long as you horizontal bands and 4 shades of green lighter then you can probably go get your own trademark on it.
I like a standard set of logos for critical functions. It would be annoying if you couldn't quickly find the call button on your friend's phone. Once again the difference is in the details.
98. JunitoNH (Posts: 651; Member since: 15 Feb 2012)
Are you guys stupid or something? If Samsung copied something, they are not going to make an exact duplicate; certainly, they are going to change the colors, fonts etc. Almost like plagiarism of a good book, or any literary work.
115. jroc74 (Posts: 3458; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Ok...so monitors with on and off icons....any lawsuits over that? Just about every monitor has the same power icon....
127. jroc74 (Posts: 3458; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Same could be said of the orig iPhone.
It wasnt an exact duplicate of phones prior....but at the end of the day....its a phone. So Apple can make a phone....but Samsung cant use icons?

it'll be interesting to see the comments when PA drops the article about Samsung now being accused of child labor abuse in their chinese factory.

The power logo on my Samsung TV remote controller is the same as it is on my Sony TV.
Sony should definitely sue Samsung for using it first.
103. kingstandup (Posts: 30; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
Dear Apple, quit your bitching and get over yourself already. This is serious sickening now. It makes me wish all the companies that Apple has stolen ideas from over the years would band together and launch lawsuits against them. Idiots.
125. tumchaaditya (Posts: 53; Member since: 21 May 2012)
Apple is going crazy about this lawsuite!
The phone icon?!
Tomorrow they will say nobody can use an envelope as e-mail icon because they do!
Samsung might as well have copied a few things from iPhone. But, this is just insane!
That kind of icon represented phone even before Apple thought of the iPhone!
131. jack1059 (Posts: 72; Member since: 31 Mar 2012)
Yep, I walked into a mobile shop and bought a samsung because I thought "Gosh it looks just like the iphone". Duh. Im sick of this crap. Two giant companies using the efd up patent system to crush each other because "My curved corner black rectangle was copied by you when you made your curved corner black rectangle."
Revamp patenting so that only truly innovative ideas can be patented. Geometric shapes, software icons, and finger gestures are out for example. Patents should also only apply to the companies that patent them, then make use of them. No selling of patents. You try to sell it, either A) the patent is void and into public domain it goes, B) patent protection is seriously reduced, or C) the company purchasing must make use of the patent idea within a further reduced timeframe (to eliminate patent trolling companies). You patent it, but don't use it within say 2years of patent? Void and into public domain. Basically, somethings gotta be done to fix this mess.

What was Samsung supposed to do? I mean, it's not like there are sooo many icons you could use for calling. Apple shouldn't trademark a green square with a phone in it, but if they do, it'll be bad news for Samsung.
