Apple accuses Samsung of copying its icons as well

Do Samsung Galaxy devices look like the iPhone? Apple argues some pretty generic features accusing Samsung of making a rectangular device. But while that might sound absurd, the real point is that Apple is trying to convince the court…

I can attest to this. I remember seeing some of Samsung's earlier Android phones and they looked way too familiar to how the iPhone looked. My mind at the time thought iPhone if it got Androidized.
Many other Android makers have made their own handsets without following Apple's designs, why couldn't Samsung do the same?

Six people hate the truth. Samsung copied Apple, this article proves it with the pictures and all.

Apart from the first picture the other 5 are different, you can't call them as copied may be inspired which apple do a lot too.
104. doublehammer (Posts: 75; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
in the same way that the apple icon was inspired by existing phone call icons. Its the same phone + green.. the only difference is that instead of the phone being green like on 99% of all previous phones, the background is green.
108. Joshua9007 (Posts: 85; Member since: 08 Jun 2012)
Hate the truth? Apple cannot just patent everything, its petty and stupid to think that they are the only person to have a note pad look to the icon for a note pad app, give me a break. Next we will have the paper industry suing apple for making the note pad app look like the real paper thing, thus killing their industry...
Same thing with the phone app, every phone used to have a green phone faced up (or at some angle) to signify sending a call. Same thing here... and we did not see phone manufacturers sue each other "no I'm the only one that can use the green phone button". Stupid.
Also gears for settings have been used since the first color phones with a menu. If I remember correctly my razr's settings icon had the gears turn when you highlighted it. Again, nothing new (and that one doesn't even look close)
How about the photo album icon? just because it has a flower, doesn't make it close... It looks more like a slideshow button, and although they might have been inspired by apple to use a flower, it is not a rip off.
The music app icon is close to the old look of the iTunes icon I will agree on that one, but there are only so many symbols for music (notes, instruments, cd's, headphones, & speakers come to my mind)
The idea that Apple is the only touch screen phone that is allowed to be rectangle (remember all screens are rectangle) is preposterous. I had a touch screen windows phone before android or apple had touch screen phones, it was crude and still used a stylus for some functions, but was ahead of its time.
The truth is that *usually* apple's apps perform much smoother and the whole experience is very consistent. This is what makes an iPhone and iPhone, and is why people buy them. Android's can be more customized and personalized in the interface, and that is why people choose those. To assume that a colored app picture swayed ANYONE is calling the entire population stupid and insulting.
I hope there is no fault found in samsung, but only because healthy competition brings technological advancements for everyone!

"I remember seeing some of Samsung's earlier Android phones and they looked way too familiar to how the iPhone looked."
Why Apple didn't sue Samsung in those days, only now?
88. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
they didnt have the cash reserves or the power… they only recently became such a prominent company
105. doublehammer (Posts: 75; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
Samsung is now a dominant threat.
If HTC had Samsung's share, you would be seeing HTC in court instead of Samsung. This is a battle over market dominance disguised as copying.
128. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
well apple would not win that one.. they could win against samsung-- nobody can doubt there are exact similarities between the phones.. its just whether they matter or not
34. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9801; Member since: 14 May 2012)
To be honest, I don't see a problem. The settings icon and the Gallery icon are completely different. The phone icon is the stupidest one.
95. AppleWho (banned) (Posts: 57; Member since: 06 Aug 2012)
so, what do you get out of all of this? Do you work for APPLE? You seem bent on brainwashing others to your way of thinking - much like a certain fruity company.
111. jroc74 (Posts: 5373; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Wow....I'm looking at the icons listed.....where is it a copy? EVen with the first iocn.....the coruners arent even the same degree. Apple's look more rounder. The corners are wider. I mention this cuz some guy said Samsung even copied the same icon corner width. Seems like they didnt.
Same style, reference pics? Yea. Exact copy? Apple is reaching. I thought a trademark protected the exact same look...not variations of it....I dont really know so...

OMG!!! Of course they look alike .. or maybe Samsung did copy but you can't sue someone saying .. ooooo BMW has round wheels just like our mercedes .. jeeez
3. serious9010 (Posts: 254; Member since: 20 Jul 2012)
Come on dude. The galaxy S looks literally like an enlarged iPhone. Your beloved uncle is going down!
17. pkiran1996 (Posts: 165; Member since: 22 Oct 2011)
OK this is ridiculous the gallery icon and the contacts icon look nothing alike and you know it.
32. dok2005 (Posts: 55; Member since: 18 Apr 2012)
seriously a child can tell the difference between the two and so can u if that the case everybody copied iphone which is a load of crap iphone isnt the first smartphone nor is it the last or even the best they got a product and thats it
90. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
that is literally the worst analogy ever… it completely changes the meaning…
apple isnt saying samsung can't have round wheels, but to the wheels have to have the exact same design? if BMW copied the exact same wheel design that mercedes had a patent for, u bet there would be someone upset over at mercedes camp…
look at other phones like motorola phones… some of their icons have a resemblance to apple icons, but none are direct copies like samsungs phone icon
109. tedkord (Posts: 7190; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
If they were exactly the same, then your analogy would hold. The only one that is even close in this article is the phone icon, and older phones had the phone handset icon on hard buttons.
4. intos (Posts: 89; Member since: 06 Jan 2012)
ohh come on !!! that is stupid !!! this is not copy right of patend !! this is just a simple thought for an icon !!!
5. Berzerk000 (Posts: 4170; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
The phone, contacts, and music look similar, yes. But the notes? What else can you use to symbol a note app other than a notepad? Plus, they made it look different. The photo icons, they look completely different, the only thing that's similar is that they use a yellow flower in the background, but that's that background, not the main icon. The settings is arguably just common, as a common perception of settings would the "gears" of the phone. A lot of these Samsung copying statements actually have some reason, but others not so much.
20. joaolx (Posts: 364; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
All of the icons also use round corners just like the iOS icons.
50. iami67 (Posts: 318; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
so you prefer figure 8 icons. round square even just edged corners are how every icon for anything has always been made. Look at the twitter icon, facebook icon, youtube icon even the icon around the word arena in phonearena on top of this page. Did they all copy apple as well.
66. fervid (Posts: 183; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
They use colored pixels just like I've been using in Paint for 20+ years too...copycats.
6. d_striders (Posts: 7; Member since: 06 Aug 2012)
They are not similar in any case. they are meant for the same function. so they are bound to have some similarities, but the differences are many.
7. TheMegaDinesen (Posts: 8; Member since: 20 Oct 2011)
So you can't use a cog for your settings icon. If the judge favors i'm gonna bitchslap that bitch so hard.
24. xtian1103 (Posts: 361; Member since: 11 Feb 2012)
i remember some phones using a wrench and a screwdriver for a settings app
51. iami67 (Posts: 318; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
Correct so are we not allowed to use that either lol. Next we cant use the word setting to tell people where the setting are.
80. shalegac (Posts: 1; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
First; Do you believe threatening a judge is acceptable? Especially because you're mad at a couple of coorporations and the use of their icons.
Second; It's a jury trial.
10. sid07desai (Posts: 290; Member since: 03 May 2012)
apart from the call icon, i don't see any resemblance.
11. wendygarett (unregistered)
Huh?? There is nothings wrong to be identical icons... Can I put Facebook icon with the letter G instead of f?? Can I put settings icons a rectangle gear instead of circle?? In the end there are nothings special in the icon
Do you know what I'm say Apple?? That's why you motivate android to create widget to substitute your boring icons and make me switch to android instant... Just shut up and innovate already...
13. lukasound (Posts: 152; Member since: 16 Nov 2011)
All of these icons are the same as most phones in history since beggining of color screens.
14. Cerberusa2a (Posts: 33; Member since: 24 May 2012)
Oh good lord...its a phone icon, so people know to press this button to make a PHONE call... maybe they should have put a elbow noodle there instead, unless apple claimed to have invented that as well
16. bayhuy (Posts: 320; Member since: 23 Jun 2011)
The Koreans soon will get what they deserve...what a pitiful plagiarisms...
18. android8 (Posts: 22; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
These are all ridiculous claims. Apple can never match up to android and creating this mess. I am sure with such advertisement Samsung will get more popularity.
19. marchels14 (unregistered)
this is just desperate from apple to get some stupid evidence that dos not even make seance, all the phones have similar phone icons.
26. xtian1103 (Posts: 361; Member since: 11 Feb 2012)
sometimes you really can't deny the fact that samsung took inspirations from apple. while a green dialer phone icon is generic, those ridges on the background isn't. notes icon, samsung could use a white paper instead of the same yellow paper. gear wheel as settings app, they can use a wrench and a screwdriver. photo app, well millions of things can be used beside a sunflower. apple also took inspirations from other companies, but the way samsung copies apple's apps, resemblance is uncanny
52. iami67 (Posts: 318; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
when people think of notes they think the yellow sticky notes that is how it has always been and when you go to buy a note pad they are typically yellow. Did apple copy the yellow icon from the yellow sticky note pad should they be sueing apple now. The flower is like an international symbol for pictures its on every camera ever made.
54. xtian1103 (Posts: 361; Member since: 11 Feb 2012)
samsung can put rose if they want to, but they didn't. also sticky notes are meant to be plain color, no lines whatsoever. i'm not saying apple used it first but samsung could've used the sticky note thing that you are talking about if they want to.
79. iami67 (Posts: 318; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
A note pad though if you go to any school supply store is yellow with blue lines its standard lol
86. xtian1103 (Posts: 361; Member since: 11 Feb 2012)
"A note pad though if you go to any school supply store is yellow with blue lines its standard lol"- undisputed, no one argues with you.
"when people think of notes they think the yellow sticky notes" ---then why didn't samsung use your sticky notes?
110. tedkord (Posts: 7190; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
I had a Samsung flip phone from about ten years ago that had a gear for the settings. not in color, mind you, but it's a generic design.
129. dok2005 (Posts: 55; Member since: 18 Apr 2012)
thank you sir gears for setting existed before iphone apple
28. jove39 (Posts: 1471; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
Galaxy S indeed was inspired by iPhone...It was beefed up version of iPhone...I owned one so I know it...I still remember when showed off my new SGS1 to a team member and got a quick response...is it iPhone rip-off? I was quite and thinking...is it?
Now...iFans...remember to keep Samsung and Android separate when you start war of words!

Why does PA allow only one +1?? :(
29. toyds123 (Posts: 24; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
My optimus black has these similar icons. but LG never gets sued. Seems samsung really has something to do with the biggest loss of apple.
36. jove39 (Posts: 1471; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
LG phones doesn't sell like Samsung's Galaxy Series!
135. doublehammer (Posts: 75; Member since: 07 Aug 2012)
proving that simply "copying" is not enough to be successful. LG directly rips off samsung left and right.. both in look and in actual industrial espionage of Amoled/LCD tech.
72. Savage (unregistered)
Nawww! Don't worry. Apple has patents for green icon, not blue. You're safe :)
38. Angkor (Posts: 108; Member since: 05 Jul 2012)
Softwares and icons are from Android not Samsung.
73. Savage (unregistered)
Actually no, They are part of Sammy's touchwiz. If you look at past versions of pure Google Androids, I doubt you'll find a phone icon which is similar to Apple's. Besides, the phone icon since Honeycomb is blue.
42. Hammerfest (Posts: 378; Member since: 12 May 2012)
Excuse me, Windows Mobile 6 called, they wanted their f**king icons back... there where even some carrier/mfg skins with rounded corners...
Oh Apple, how hard you are trying... #AppleFail
43. rickywinataa (Posts: 262; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
no, i think the button is universal. see, the color of answer button have been green for years and for the call logo, of course it will be a phone symbol. so a phone logo with a green background.
44. speckledapple (Posts: 892; Member since: 29 Sep 2011)
its almost like they are looking at every little thing and saying hey he copied me. Are they serious? This is just annoying.
