Andy Rubin's Essential Android smartphone spotted on GFXBench

The so-called father of Android, Andy Rubin, has been working on a high-end Android handset that is expected to take on top shelf models like the Apple iPhone and the Google Pixel. We recently got a partial look at the phone, and it also was benchmarked on Geekbench. Today, the phone was spotted on the GFX Bench website.

The Essential FIH-PM1 (the name of the company producing the device is called Essential Products) will have a screen rumored to be 5.5-inches. According to GFXBench, the display carries a resolution of 1312 x 2560. This produces an aspect ratio of 80:41 compared to the 82:41 (or 18:9) on the LG G6. The Snapdragon 835 SoC is indeed under the hood, with an octa-core 2.2GHz CPU and the Adreno 540 GPU. 4GB of RAM is inside along with 16GB of native storage. We're hoping that the device will be offered with larger storage options.

A 12MP camera rests on the back of the device, with an 8MP selfie-shooter in front. There is no auto focus on the back camera, according to GFXBench, but NFC is supported. Android 7.0 is pre-installed. Reportedly, the phone will offer some modular capabilities through the use of a port found on the device, and the handset could have a feature similar to Apple's  3D Touch.

The device will be churned out by Foxconn (hence the FIH in its name, which stands for Foxconn International Holdings) and could be ready for release some time in the middle of this year.
