Android's Google Play store has just officially reached over 1 million apps and it is now finally outgrown the Apple App Store and its 900 000 applications. That's a huge achievement for Android...

Same for the App store, there is a massive amount of notepad and flashlight apps. Both suffer from redundancy problems.

It's abit unfair to compare the app store to Google play since it's like comparing the app store to Cydia + the app store. The 900K+ apps on the app store are all apps while on the Google play store some of them are launchers, icon packs, live wallpapers, keyboards, widgets, add ons, themes...

Don't hate because the best iOS can do for wallpaper is parallax and the only widgets that it supports is a stock ticker.

i'm not hating on android infact it's my os of choice and i'm happy everytime a dev announces an app for android before ios, but if you want to make a fair compariso, either you count the number of apps on both the app store and cydia or the number of apps in the play store without the costumization related stuff

How so? This is a store vs store comparison, based on what's accessable out of the box, right? I don't think the iPhone's limitations shouldn't be taken into consideration at all.

I don't consider a keyboard, launcher or a live wallpaper an app, period. It's not about limitations, tasker is an app and it will never be on ios due to it's limitations, but swiftkey is not an app, apex or nova aren't apps...

I disagree about a keyboard app. There are some keyboard apps that function and work alot different than a traditional keyboard.
Same for launcher apps. A launcher app can make your phone look n feel like an entirely new, different phone. Introduce new features, etc. That actually happened to me one time, person thought I had a new phone.
File managers.... same thing. Some function differently than others and traditional file managers.
Same thing for messenger apps.
Live wallpaper, wallpapers...I agree with you on that.

Actually live wallpapers are apps! Its just people don't actually think there is an effort put there
But haunted house wallpaper
Many of those give your device an interesting turn
may not be something practical but if a fart app counts as an app why a live wallpaper is not?

No, I do think live wallpaper is a bit different. I'm using Your City right now and you can tell this took a lot of work. These should be considered apps, but I was thinking more along the lines of just plain wallpaper. Anyone can just take a picture, but the live wallpapers, especially the interactive ones have to be considered apps.

Why wouldn't it be an app? Just because it can't be done on iOS doesn't mean that it shouldn't be counted.

1million + apps ( 1000 good apps, the rest are just junk!)

This was going to happen no one need a crystal ball to see this. With Samsung making such a huge push as the # 1 smartphone manufacture and with the Chinese and Indian manufactures building Android devices ( They can't built Apple devices because only Apple can use the OS) to sell to their local population of course developers saw an open market that would allow them to reach millions if not billions.
The only logical recourse was for the play store to surpass the app store. This is not a down on the app store but just the economy of scale at work.

I notice a few apps like Line and Handcent have many apps that go along with the primary app, so maybe the numbers include those 'sub-apps'? Also, since Android is all about customization, there are lots of theme apps, and there also many Root required apps. Also, there are no tablet only apps, just apps optimized for tablets that also work with phones. This makes the million apps on Google play store quiet impressive. With the play store, you can also see what you downloaded before.
