Google’s Android platform continues to grow at a fast pace and interestingly that growth is hugely driven by phones with screens bigger than 4.5 inches. Android smartphones…

Americans are smart. They don't buy those s**tty android brick. They go for the sophisticated touch and feel of the iPhone B-)
I will find pride in every thumb down - a sign that fandroids are pissed ! :D

Your mom must be so proud of you, and iOS being a dumbed down version of a proper OS I can see why some people find if "easier" to use.
13. abdane posted on 03 Sep 2012, 10:03 19
yea thats why the share for android is still higher than iOS ! LOL

I wouldn't be so proud of using a phone whose functions and use are dictated by a company, and only and idiot would feel happy that they got ripped off. I prefer Android any day, and if you knew how much they charge for unsubsidized IPhones you'd understand why they are losing market

I always find it funny how stupid people like to use the word "smart" and right after that say something both stupid and ignorant :-)
Oh, good for you for feeling proud of being raped every time you buy an iSomething, you're really taking it like a man

One simple answer to this trend not yet following in USA, 99 percent of people in the US are in some sort of contract, which probably started within the past two years and haven't had a chance to shop yet... Europe isn't so you may constantly shop for a new phone there whenever they want... I think if you took a poll in regards to what operating system people are going to buy next, a large majority would be going android and getting a huge screen
46. joey_sfb posted on 03 Sep 2012, 22:32 3
I giving you a thumb down as requested.
I not piss as mobile OS come and goes, i will just use the one that suit me best.
And, iOS is clearly the inferior choice based on the number of restriction a normal user has to overcome to get things done.
Anyway, Apple fanboy will always make do with whatever apple gives them. Imagine they are struck with a single button mouse for decades before they finally have gesture trackpad.

Since the EVO and Droid X launched in 2010...ppl have been buying bigger screen phones for the past 2 years. Bigger screen Android phones have been available ever since. Maybe.....other countries havent started doing that until recently?
2. andro. posted on 03 Sep 2012, 08:59 22
Its no surprise, outside the US apples dominance is well and truly gone,it won't be long before android has 70% of the market share.Ive seen it in shops day after day people migrating from the 3gs or the iphone 4 to a top level android handset.
The US is different, apple has a strangle hold not only on the courts but the patent system and is trying its utmost to make it that the iphone is the only available smartphone in the US.
3. TylerGrunter posted on 03 Sep 2012, 09:09 3
I think it's more related to subsidies: in the rest of the world Apple don't have the power to obly the carriers to give the high subsidies they have to give in US.
And for the patents> most of the pantents Apple uses in court are software patents, and in most of the countries they are not valid. US is one of the few countries where you can patent software implementations.
7. buccob posted on 03 Sep 2012, 09:18 5
Actually you are mistaken, even in Venezuela (where I live) the iPhone is the only high end phone being subsidized by carriers and is the reason people still find it very popular....
But most are still buying full price high end Android phones... At least the ones that get in... Galaxy S3 and S2 are the most popular right now
31. andro. posted on 03 Sep 2012, 12:01 0
Is not really that they don't have the power its just that they simply won't. Carriers already have to pay so much more to apple in contracts and agreements that they simply can't afford to apply as much subsidized prices. That saying in slot of areas in Europe handsets like the one x and galaxy s3 aren't all that much cheaper than the 4$ but android is way more popular.
4. remixfa posted on 03 Sep 2012, 09:10 8
They already have a massive share of the US market. Its not going to be any huge upticks from here on out. Its all from emerging markets like China, India, and else where were android doesnt already own 50%+ of the market.
44. Qvergnugen posted on 03 Sep 2012, 19:10 1
I agree with you remixfa. Percentages by themselves could be very misleading without knowing what the actual number of units sold are. This article fails to mention that while the percentages are shifting, the pie is also getting bigger, so even though the Android market share is less, the actual number of units sold may still be greater. In the markets outside of the US, most of the iOS + Android gains came at the expense of symbian and rim losing market shares. In the US, symbian+rim account for so little that an iOS gain inevitably has to come from some android losses.
5. buccob posted on 03 Sep 2012, 09:15 14
I think that in the US there were a lot of people who bought an android phone at the time android, was not mature enough (2.3+) to catch the users attention to an "iphone" level. So many of those people changed to the iPhone 4.
And now that Android phones has surpassed the iPhone in almost any way possible (features, easy to use, free apps, hardware... etc), many US americans do not want to go back to use an Android because they "already tried before"...
While other markets in the World, including my home (Venezuela) start getting android phones "latter" and those came preloaded with a mature Android version. So the popularity over the iPhone is very clear...
Specially when the iPhone 4S here sells 30% higher than a Galaxy S3.

I agree with you 100% here. I've been a BlackBerry user for years. My wife recently got an iPhone and I absolutely hate it. The app integration is nearly nonexistent and that with it being too small is my main beef.
That said, I tried an Android phone too a while back and it wasn't up to par as far as being as grown up as even BlackBerry.
However, beginning with Ice cream Sandwich, that has changed. Android has moved along well and from my usage does almost everything that a BlackBerry can do and now more for the most part. It has now evolved enough that I think I'd be pretty happy with it for usability and also fun. :)
41. jcpwn2004 posted on 03 Sep 2012, 14:57 2
agreed 100%. A lot of my friends on verizon bought android phones back in its infancy (1.6-2.1) before the iphone was available as an option. They used phones like the htc eris, thunderbolt etc....Left a bad taste in their mouths and they all wanted to jump ship to get the iphone. Now they won't listen to me when I try to convince them to get a phone like the galaxy s3 or htc one x.
8. redmd posted on 03 Sep 2012, 09:27 3
Because there's Android in every price range. The high end will feed on iPhone sakes while the low end will feed on feature phone sales. Android is dominating.
9. remixfa posted on 03 Sep 2012, 09:43 3
The iphone inhibits every range from 200 to free on contract. Android phones are actually more expensive off contract for some models.. which are the most popular ones.. the SGS3, OneX, ect.
17. Retro-touch posted on 03 Sep 2012, 10:16 5
You must think everyone is American??!! IPhones are bloody expensive yet they offer little compared to Android not to mention the price ranges it captures, I see people with the Huawei Ideos and Galaxy Mini (cheap) more than high end phones cause its what they can manage. Most people aren't rich
26. redmd posted on 03 Sep 2012, 10:54 0
The last time I check thecheapest iPhone in stores is the outdated iPhone 3gs 8 GB. it's 320USD off contract. With that price you could get an Android phone with a decent specs blowing the 3gs out if the water. People want Android because it has features and it's cheaper than iPhone. We are not on the same side of the planet remix.
30. Peter27 posted on 03 Sep 2012, 11:53 0
The price is ridiculous. I check the adverts and people still asking a big amounts for these old phones. They always say. But it is iPhone!
They live out of reality. iPhone is just very overpriced phone. They still think they are the kings here or something...
42. mrbtree posted on 03 Sep 2012, 15:06 0
in australia the iphone 4s (16gb) is $64(59 plan + 5 handset repayment) a month for a 2 year contract, thats just under $2000 dollars over that time period. unlocked they're about $750-$800. same specked phones like the xperia u ($277), xperia p($450), htc one s($550), xperia s($400), etc are atleast $200-$300 cheaper yet blow the iphone out of the water. the galaxy s3, htc one x and the galaxy note are in the $600+ range. paying for the brand name, image and the status you gain amongst your friends.

Apple is a US company.therefore,it's not strange it's still holding on some percentage in its home land. The Americans will not let their company down even if it's not making top notch phones anymore. Glad some of us living outside the US have been blessed with bigger and faster android smartphones.

Not all of us feel this way-- sure alot of people ( US or anywhere else) loves to see their Country companies do well, but in my book( US citizen);
If a company have a BETTER product, at a reasonable price..I am on their team!!..
I've been Window-Nokia-Palm-BB-HTC-Samsung..now by the looks of it.
for me, it's coming down between Sony-T vs GNote-2 vs GNexus ( nov-5th)
my next phone :)

It's funny that USA likes and wants everything to be bigger, larger and better, yet they like their phones with small screens. Oh well.. Back to enjoying the Note that lot of reviewers disses about how large it is, but end up selling more than 10 millions. Why? Because a lot of us are using our phones differently now. It is used for media, movies, games, internet, social etc. Phone calls are actually not top of the list. We basically need a larger screen in current times. Imagine playing a game with on screen dpad and buttons on a 3.5" screen. My 2 thumbs already blocks out at least 1/3 of the screen. And watching a movie on one? Sheesh. I've got the iphone too and that is collecting dust right now because I had enough with the small screen that never changed in size for years on their newer models.

This may explain why Americans still love a dull, small, outdated OS of a phone:

It is to the advantage of a religion not to feed the arguments and fan the flames of dissension. After all, the only absolute is that none can be proven in matters of the faith. However, in concrete objects like tech toys and gadgets, an objective comparison can be reasonably made. Only iPhone acolytes who deify Jobs and worship Apple Inc. would name someone who is trashing the iPhone as a troll.
Maybe he is right. It is absolutely a sacrilege to defame Apple... Uh... I mean, God.

WOW! I had no idea iPhones were being beaten so badly outside the USA, on the other hand Android is absolutely owning, even in the US despite the drop in market share, no wonder Apple are on a suing rampage, lol, they are clutching at straws though as in the long run the iPhone will no longer be as big unless there is a major change in strategy.
