Android loses a little of its U.S. market share, but still owns more than half

Metrics firm comScore has its monthly update of U.S.market share, designed to get some of you excited and the rest of you picking a fight; it's like watching an NHL contest. Or better yet, it's like watching those now classic commercials by Microsoft that show iOS and Android fans going at it. So with your adrenaline all revved up, let's take a look at the numbers...

Android is still the king here! Android rocks!

Yes it does! Keep up the good work Google!

Only because you can find android devices anywhere. Even dollar stores like dollar general are starting to carry them.
39. DukeX (Posts: 327; Member since: 28 Aug 2013)
Typical ifan holding on to old arguments. So what's the 5C supposed to represent? Poor rich ifans.
41. Whateverman (Posts: 3158; Member since: 17 May 2009)
I would rather use a dollar store Android, than your hot pink UI, Candyland lookin' phone. Or are you waiting for the "New, Magical, Elegant, Exactly-The-Same-as-the-5 and the 5s- iPhone 5sg"? Lol! Keep trolling dude, it makes me laugh.

Good news for you, Mxyzptik. That mean Apple can release their iPhone 6 exactly like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5. An iPhone 4"with a slight speed bump.
24. takeja (Posts: 35; Member since: 16 Aug 2013)
Exactly, but Google should realize they must give money for a huge Android system TV ad.....the USA is about brainwashing people by Apple, not about simplicity and featureless of the outdated and vulnerable iPhones/iPads
So Google, innovate, give us features, don't remove features and create a huge Android system ad showing the Apple's inferiority!
The only way how to beat them
27. MobileKicker (Posts: 212; Member since: 19 Sep 2013)
And will lose the half when iphone 6 will come

In your dreams Apple fanboy!
I5s and e no impact what good will ip6 do... What a joker...
37. DukeX (Posts: 327; Member since: 28 Aug 2013)
That's what they said about the iphone 4,4s,5,5c,and 5s. Keep making up that same excuse. It's the same with the ipad. Making the same product isn't going to hold up for too much longer.

Let's see how are the numbers internationally?
52. werthedroids (Posts: 60; Member since: 15 Sep 2013)
Keep dreaming, iSh33p. that's what they said about the iPhone 4Same, then the 5, then 5Same & 5Cheap, but look now, Android is still King.
46. madmikepr (Posts: 68; Member since: 09 Aug 2011)
i was wondering where is Sony in the chart if there were gaining market share ???? :/
2. Whateverman (Posts: 3158; Member since: 17 May 2009)
No matter what the fanboys say, I think Google and Apple's strategies are working very well for them. Google getting AndroiAsia as many devices as possible and Apple selling as many phones as possible. And I'm really shocked BlackBerry still has 4% market share. With the shape their in right not, that's AMAZING!
4. Shatter (Posts: 1766; Member since: 29 May 2013)
3.9% of thats 4% is government/company workers.
6. xperiaDROID (Posts: 4828; Member since: 08 Mar 2013)
BlackBerry is not dead yet if you ask me, there are still people who love BB phones, so BlackBerry shouldn't waste time now, just lower the price on their BB phones, add more apps and games to the App World, it will still attract some users that left BB to another platform, and users like us as well. So BlackBerry must really stand up now, the show must go on and there's still a chance.

Some people are holding to Symbian... awesome! To bad it succumbed to a certain trojan.
7. Bernoulli (Posts: 1399; Member since: 01 Sep 2012)
It's crazy how symbian is still on the radar! Long live symbian!

S4 sales tanking rumor has been put to rest. Looks like Samsung sold plenty of S4 in the third quarter. And with Note 3 sales doing well, looks like another good quarter coming as well.
11. ocilfa (Posts: 299; Member since: 03 Aug 2012)
That sounds small, but that 0.8 is a large chunk of only about 5%. Thats nearly 20%.
13. Commentator (Posts: 2183; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
If total sales increased compared to the previous time period, then an overall drop in market-share doesn't necessarily mean a drop in sales of a particular brand, it just means other brands outsold them by a pretty large margin.
In BBRY's case though, I think it's fairly certain sales have been dropping...
33. apple4never (Posts: 763; Member since: 08 May 2013)
oh true, i thought that was total like 0.8 % after drop in sales, thanks for clearing that up
14. Kitkat_4.4 (Posts: 74; Member since: 03 Sep 2013)
Only 1.xx increase in iOS ? fail... should have more much more with the release of iPhone 5c/s. Oh well, android will f**k iOS with Nexus 5 launch ;)
15. Commentator (Posts: 2183; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Uh, yeah... you know how those stats say "3 Month Avg. Ending AUG-13"...?
As in, the period immediately BEFORE the 5c/s launch, in which consumers would presumably be holding out for the next iPhone and NOT buying one just yet, as well as a frame of time in which the Galaxy S 4 was launched... i.e. a period in which iOS' share was MOST LIKELY to fall...?
...Yeah, about that...
16. Commentator (Posts: 2183; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Edit: Or at least the first full 3 month frame in which the SGS4 was available, as it was launched in April. My B.
17. Commentator (Posts: 2183; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
Oh, sorry if I misinterpreted what you said. Did you mean that you believe it will have a much higher market-share after the release of the iPhone 5c/s? Because if you were saying that I apologize for being so sarcastic.
I read it to mean that you thought these reports were made AFTER the iPhone 5c/s. If you didn't mean that, please ignore this and refer to my original sarcastic, snarky remark.
23. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 308; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
If you could actually read, which I doubt, but if, you would have seen that the above article is based on may to august sales where NO NEW iPhone waere lunched. So kinda impossible to have a big rise especially when august is the last month before new iPhone is announced and many people stop buying current iPhones to wait for the new ones.
Oh well clueless little boy goes on rant to protect its virginity that android holds very well!
19. GrapeEyes (Posts: 243; Member since: 01 Sep 2013)
These figures are just for the US.
If you did the figures for India with 1.2 billion people, you would see
The US will be irrelavant in 10 years, so Apple and Android will DIE!!!
And Microsoft/Nokia will rule the World!!!
20. Whateverman (Posts: 3158; Member since: 17 May 2009)
Dude, you're trying waaaay to hard. Lol!
22. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 308; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
So you make clueless predictions? If microsoft owned 91% of India market share which has 1.2 billion people as you say then microsoft market share for whole world wouldn't be 9% but more like 30%+. Please try to misinform other people, it doesn't work here where many people read actual news and statistics.

As long as you stay over there you can think whatever you like
40. Ronny666 (Posts: 108; Member since: 08 Jun 2013)
Indian market segment is mainly on low-range to mid-range phones, and mostly feature phones, not smartphones.
Most people in India still can't afford to buy flagship devices. Even tiny countries like Singapore sold more flagship devices than in India, that's rather shameful. Let's not compare with US or UK.
My advice: try to get a decent car and we'll talk about country's progress or ruling the world. :)
53. werthedroids (Posts: 60; Member since: 15 Sep 2013)
In your wildest dreams, maybe. But seriously dude. Microsoft makes such glitchy software that even if that did happen and every single device under the sun ran windows, then I wouldn't be surprised if some day, everything will simultaneously crash and BOOM zombie apocalypse (just kidding about the zombie apocalypse part, but you get the point)
21. muhammadlal (Posts: 1; Member since: 05 Oct 2013)
Blackberry if you ask me, BB phone loved ones, yet, so Blackberry, I should not waste the time to lower the price on their BB phones, App World on adding more apps and games are still not there yet BB left dead some other platforms to attract users, and users, as well as like us. Blackberry because I now have to stand, the show must go on and there is still a chance.

It shows here that Apple and iOs are the king in U.S.
26. twens (Posts: 446; Member since: 25 Feb 2012)
The US is not even in the top 5 richest countries. That explains the fact that people who buy Iphones in the US is not for the fact that they are rich but instead i-sheeps who have been brainwashed by hype and fashion trends of Apple. Doesn't it surprise you guys that all over the world it's only in the US that the iphone is still relevant???
34. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 308; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
Maybe because its the home country of Apple and usually companies do better in their home countries than outside? If I had a company in my country that makes good phones I would like to support it. Why do you think NOKIA had total domination in Finland? Why do you think mercedes, audi and bmw dominate German car market. Why do you think volvo dominates the car market in Sweden. Its called logic. Also anyone who buys iPhone is brainwashed and a sheep? Thats the stupidest thing I ever heard. ALSO, USA is the biggest smartphone market on the world. So owning usa market is a pretty big deal. Although China is slowly catching up but still its the low end android phones that do well in China but not S4, NOTE3, LG G2, HTC ONE etc.

S4 Sales in the 3rd quarter are getting higher and higher. Note 3 will be a Blast to. All Hail to King Android!
35. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 308; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
All hail to monopoly!!! "Monopolies are thus characterized by a lack of economic competition to produce the good or service and a lack of viable substitute goods." Oh and before you say you can buy different hardware, which is true its still the same OS and that gives google domination and they wont need to innovate in the future since no one is pushing since there is no competition. Just look at android 4.1 and after. Its all the same with some fixes. Nothing innovative or great. But yeah, all hail to king android!
54. werthedroids (Posts: 60; Member since: 15 Sep 2013)
4.1 Google Now (no one has ever come up with the concept of giving you relevant info based on your searches, e-mail, location etc.) 4.2 multiple accounts, lock screen widgets, photo sphere camera and swipe based camera interface, quick settings, swype based keyboard (name one mobile os that's ever had those before) 4.3 not that much new (except major perfomance and battery life improvements) cuz google is saving the innovative new features for kit kat

While I'm sure investors and Apple care about the micro numbers, it's pretty impressive what Android has been able to do in terms of entering the market during Apple's prime and taking a few large slices from their cake ...and also taking a large glass of Milk to go with it.
I assume they will both somewhat catch up with each other and go back and forth and compare the two like Walgreens and CVS... whoever is convient at the time, has the coupon and the right price is going to get the sale.
However, because both will be very great platforms the user will be remain "mostly" brand loyal to the first platform they adopt.
