Android Market hits 20,000 apps and keeps growing
Just 5 months after reaching 10,000 apps, the Android Marketplace has doubled and now offers approximately 20,000 titles. Of the total, nearly 38% require payment while the remaining balance consists of free downloads. Looking at the graph of New applications and games, you can see in pictures what a thousand words could tell you-that the Market is growing by leaps and bounds. Mobile Crunch estimates that the site will be hosting 50,000 apps by the 2Q of next year. Driving the growth is the increasing number and popularity of new Android powered handsets and devices like the Motorola DROID (on the nation's largest carrier), the HTC DROID ERIS (ditto), the HTC Hero (Sprint) and the upcoming HTC Nexus One (unlocked, but favoring T-Mobile) will assure that there is plenty of demand for developers to meet by designing new and better apps.

I think it's funny when I read "F*@k the iPhone" from all these VZW and android fanboys.but even funnier when they say the iPhone is goin down. Every new phone is an iPhone killer. And I have to admit the droid is closest yet to being just that. But the fact remains to be an iPhone killer u can't just be better in some areas. U can't just be better in all technical areas. Because the iPhone is still and probably be for a long time the best in the most important area: sales. It doesn't matter how many apps u have. Or how fast u are or why network your on. The iPhone outsells any other handset worldwide by a huge margin. Apples marketshare beats most other manufacturers and comes close to the too manufacturer. What most ppl don't seem to see is that's huge because everyone else has at least half a dozen devices, which combined, still don't sell as much as apples 1 device or just outsell it by a nominal margin. The droid is awesome! VZW has great coverage. But the iPhone sells.

Didn't you say the Storm 1,2, Palm Pre (dunno but this one), among others were iphone killers?

ya...i did say the storm 1 was an iphone killer...i would never go back to a blackberry. but after owning the droid for over a month i would def say that people should chose the droid over the iphone.

Dude, you have never owned an iPhone... get over how much you hate Apple and the iPhone. Get over your undying love fantasy with Verizon (they don't care about you anyway). Get Over Yourself.

i have used it far enough to know how boring it is and the lack of customization. i don't understand how people have owned the iphone for over 2 years.

What's so customizable about the Droid that you can't do with the iPhone?

to JackFace: ive used an iphone and i dropped at&t for big red and got myself a droid. the iphone is a great phone but the things you can do and the little extras on the droid make it for me. and your "they dont care about you anyway" makes no sense because verizon is the best network in the us... to HOVA: please see vzw fanman's post :)

@deschats: Thank You. You are a whole lot more credible than most on here because you have experience with both. The "they dont care about you anyway" is referring to the fact that VZW or even AT&T, T-Mo, etc. for that matter don't care about any fanboys on a phone website. Why on earth are there fanboys so blindly loyal to a corperation that doesn't even know they exist except as a number and name on a bill... just makes me laugh.

yes clever, sales are important. but u know what, the RAZR was the highest sold phone for like 5 years. A record in the cell industry. And much like the iphone it didnt change much in those 5 years. Where is it now? lol. yesterdays news. Just because it sells, doesnt mean its not out dated, and doesnt mean that it will still sell tomorrow.

May be Android Apps will hit 300,000 in 2 years will pass iPhone Apps at this pace.

Android has 20,000 after 1 year, Apple had 50,000, so actually they would need to pick up the pace considerably to make that happen.

Not really as the end of October, they had just under 11,000 apps. So a month and a couple weeks they have doubled they're app store. If it does not slow down it could be potentially have 300k apps in 2yrs. Time will tell for both Apple and Android app stores.

I didn't give you a negative 1. Why are you being so rude. I was just stating fact also. If you notice I said time will tell. I've read tons of your post's you always have negative's. Saying I'm a fucking idiot for something I didn't do is probably why you get them because of the responsives you give. Please be respectful.

what karma hova? they have android.. ATT doesnt.. android is superior in every way to apple.. ATT wouldnt be where it is without its beloved iphone, which loses exclusivity in 6 months... and goes to VZW as a LTE upgraded iphone. and ATT wont even carry android for some reason.. i see dark days in ATT's future :) ... lol

I'm just wondering, does anybody know if developing apps for android is easier than the iPhone?

I've been toying around with both kits, and I notice Android is slightly easier, but not by much or even worth mentioning. The main factor I think the app store is being built so fast is you can use on PC or MAC and Apple's SDK is Mac only. That's I think one of the reasons.

-I think peole are getting to caught up on the whole "App" thing. New devices need to stop trying to catch up to the iphone on apps. I'm not a big fan of the iphone, but by the time Android reaches 100,000 apps iphone will be around triple that amount.

Hey I will stand by the apps comments for the iphone... 20k apps big deal unless there are useful ones. I just got a driod and am having issues finding decent apps for myself (my uses). Not finding simple apps that I think should be. in android market I see 100s of stupid soundboard apps, about 20 different flashlight apps (how many could you possibly need). Yet the only real app I really really really want are some notification widgets. A simple 1x1 widget that tells me how many new e-mails/gtalks/calendars/corp emails etc. I have only found 1 for gmail that costs a few bucks. At least its open source and maybe I can take a crack at creating them? There are some cools apps too though. Locale, shopsavy etc. It just seems that most of my time in the market is skipping stupid fart/sounds apps.

Yeah as more companies and devs get into it... should get better. Would be nice if google had a PC website so it was faster and easier to find good apps.
