Android Market has largest percentage of free apps
Dutch analytics firm, Distimo does nothing but study apps. At the recently concluded MWC, they gave a presentation on the 6 largest stores. Below, you will find a slideshow that details some of their findings. No surprise that the App Store is the largest with over 150,000 choices while the Android Market comes in second with 20,000 apps. The latter has increased the number of downloads every month since opening. From a smaller base than the Apple store, Android is actually growing faster on a percentage basis. ReadWriteWeb points out that Android Market is the fastest growing of all app stores. The Android Market also has the largest percentage of free apps (57%) quite possibly due to the open source nature of the Android OS.

This is something I totally took for granted having moved to a Pre Plus. Pay for apps suck! I will gladly take free apps with ads anyday, excluding home/theme apps!

In the last 4 months android has went from 16000 apps to 20000 apps. That's 1000 apps a month. Awesome. Apple went from 120000 apps to 150000 apps. They have grown by more apps that android even has. How can some say android is growing faster? And a larger percentage does not mean more apps. 57% is roughly 11000 or so(roughly) which is far less than the total free apps on iPhone. But I have to say android is growing steadily and that itslef is impressive. A true competitor for sure. I'm not trying to be a famboy here just point out the blond side journalism here.
