umm, why wasnt Opera counted as an "alternative browser" in android? Its the one i use the most. opera is an alternative on multiple systems.

"An alternative browser in Android"...? That wouldn't make sense. You even say its used across multiple systems, so why count it for one OS?

Good news for Android's stock browser. Haven't used it in a while myself; Just flip flop between Dolphin, Opera, Skyfire, & xScope a lot.

Are these just smartphone stats, or all mobile devices? Cnet had an article posted a few days ago that included mobile browser usage and it looked like Android may have surpassed Opera once back in Oct 2011.
Looking at that stat again though, it doesn't say 'Opera', it says 'Opera Mini' so Opera Mobile may have been excluded.
And... possibly because it's really (i)Cnet, they've got Safari listed as tapping around the 60% mobile share area, not the 21.06. That's a fairly large discrepancy between the two stats.

(Don't mind the title, the mobile metrics are in there too.)

how can it be? a huge number of featurephones use opera as their defult browser. and there is more of these phones than smartphones.
if this article is about smartphones, the cnet news tells a diffrent story, so, what is it?

Yep... that's exactly what I'm saying. Something seems amiss.

19. pbui.818 posted on 04 Mar 2012, 11:32 1

Or people who buy the feature phones don't actually use the browser?

Great day for Apple technology. The android browser as well as Chrome uses webkit that Apple gave away for free. So many android users are able to enjoy surfing the web all because the late Steve Jobs didn't want MicroSoft to dominate the mobile browser space as MS dominated desktop computing.

11. protozeloz posted on 03 Mar 2012, 15:16 5

is not like they have a choice webkit was creating using OPEN SOURCE protocols apple is well known for stealing and not giving back.

24. ardent1 posted on 04 Mar 2012, 22:27 1

protozeloz: you say some of the dumbest things at times. Open source is independent of Apple's skills at coding, and even a six-grader under this point. Apple created a really great engine for mobile browsers and gave it away for free to deny MicroSoft the chance to dominate the mobile browser space.

About 15 years ago, MicroSoft "bundled" Internet Explorer with new computers and that act destroyed Netscape's ability to be a dominating desktop browser.

protozeloz , give your apple witch-hunting antics a rest will you. You have to stop using trailer-park logic at the same time.

You are funny. I'm sorry but the truth is the truth. They took it from a version of Linux and revised it. Go search for it, I've posted the info a million times in here.

Android ICS stock browser is a very good browser. It's fast and chock full of features that you can't find in other alternative browsers. You can even save web pages for offline reading. Plus, it can sync your Chrome bookmarks.

that's actually not fair..... you put all the android phones in the same category but split ios devices into ipod touch and iphone!!!
