Analysts: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is not the answer to Samsung's problems
0. phoneArena 08 Aug 2014, 11:42 posted on
With Samsung's mobile business now showing a year-over-year decline, many Samsung analysts have been keeping an eye on the rumored specs for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The brokerage firms' pencil pushers were hoping that the next iteration of Sammy's phablet could save the day. The device is expected to be unveiled on September 3rd, at the IFA show in Berlin...

Premium materials? Really? They never figured it out?

Thanku phonearena for reporting idiots? Note 2,3 and s4,5 look same?
Phonearena editors must be blind for reporting these ridiculous things

Actually the differences are not that major to someone who isn't a techie like us. I have friends asking if the S5 is a S4 and vice versa, so I'm not too surprised he made that comment
34. sgodsell (Posts: 2369; Member since: 16 Mar 2013)
What I care about more is what's inside of a smart phone. To me the S5 is excellent. With it being water and dust resistant, and a swiss army knife of smart phones. To me that counts more then a casing. Besides I see so many iPhone users with cases around their phones, because aluminum scratches and dents easier. The cameras are excellent on Samsung's devices like the S5 and other Samsung devices. With multi-window support so you can run multiple things at once simultaneously. Its really great.

Every phones have same problem just look at apple 4 and 4s .. 5 and 5s are same.. Not only apple and Samsung but other like Sony, LG's flagships have minor differences...
53. Doakie (Posts: 1660; Member since: 06 May 2009)
For a while there even my trained eye would have a hard time telling an iPhone 5 from a 4S if it was in a case. There were a half a dozen times I had incorrectly identified an iPhone 5 and thought it was a 4S. Apparently my eye couldn't discern between a 4.0" screen and a 3.5" screen when not placed next to a larger phone. Also I wasn't holding any of the iPhones I misjudged.
114. naittosan (Posts: 234; Member since: 28 Jun 2014)
I think the point is the iPhone 6 will be of a different design yet high quality.
85. hurrycanger (Posts: 1502; Member since: 01 Dec 2013)
LG gets bigger difference between its flagships imo.
It's Apple and Sony flagships that keep looking the same, like literally. I'm glad you mentioned those. The 4 and 4s look the same. The 5 and 5s look like the same except for the home button (and the led flash?). And all the iPhones have had pretty much the same look in the front.
As for Sony, heck yeah, all the Z, Z1, Z2, look very similar, much more than the similarity between the Galaxy S models.
It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a big change or to keep the devices similar to each other, but yeah, putting all that bs on just Samsung is pretty silly.
94. nebsif (Posts: 37; Member since: 27 Jul 2014)
at least iphones look good (imo)... its just sad how chinese manufacturers manage to produce better looking plastic devices, w/ almost the same specs (no amoled and isocell) at half the price.
I dont give a crap about metal, but damn why make it THAT ugly (black s5 aka ugly galaxy grand im looking at you).
110. doejon (Posts: 388; Member since: 31 Jul 2012)
lol yes and what about the iphone even techguys like we are cant tell iphone 4 or 4s or 5 or 5s xD
122. Cicero (Posts: 703; Member since: 22 Jan 2014)
Did you ask them why they are interested about being S4 or S5? If they only care for social status that matter.
59. rahul.niks (Posts: 86; Member since: 31 Oct 2013)
I am no fanboy but actually when i went to Samsung store, all phones i saw were more or less same, i mean the looks and design. May b note were different but again all notes were same. Plus they don't feel great, again from outside, so this isn't totally ridiculous
72. rromerof (Posts: 43; Member since: 28 Nov 2012)
I'm still unable to see any differences among S3, S4 and S5. They look exactly the same device. The only difference is the price. LOL.

The bashing Samsung must go on.
No mater if iPropaganda use the menial media or menial anallists.
Ooooh , and the "premium aluminium" BS must persist in every article too.
Same anallists and media , that were attacking to blood the first Note, and Wacom pen, and loving the 3.5" "perfect" screen size.
58. torr310 (Posts: 575; Member since: 27 Oct 2011)
They didn't use premium materials on the S5 was a mistake made. There is no turning back for this year because the majority people would prefer a "NORMAL" size phone over a phablet. Hope you do better on the S6!
131. pego99 (Posts: 86; Member since: 01 Aug 2012)
This permium materials bull is stuff by fanboys. I have a Galaxy S4 and there is nothing wrong with the materials. More metal woukd make the phone heavier and might negatively effect the radio reception and transmission.
I would rather have plastic and a removable battery than metal and a sealed battery.

Face the reality : people will either buy iPhone6 or heavily subsided GN3. It looks really bad for Sammy.
6. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9846; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Because the S4/S5/S4 Mini/S5 Mini isn't selling. Yup. Logic.
38. sgodsell (Posts: 2369; Member since: 16 Mar 2013)
Consider Samsung sells more then double what Apple sells. Not to mention they have every class and price know to man on the market. They have smart watches of their own and Android wear as well.
45. JakeLee (banned) (Posts: 1021; Member since: 02 Nov 2013)
Apple ALONE made more than double the profit of ALL Android vendors together.
Do you think iPhone users are stupid?
Smart watches? Ask Sammy how much money they lost.
60. Doakie (Posts: 1660; Member since: 06 May 2009)
"Apple ALONE made more than double the profit of ALL Android vendors together.
Do you think iPhone users are stupid?"
I don't think you're stupid. I think you're bad with money though. You pay too much for something too small...
69. elitewolverine (Posts: 3461; Member since: 28 Oct 2013)
or pay triple for, note 3, for something i would rather buy a tablet for. In fact, my current phone/tablet combo was a cheaper deal and imo a better use of cash.
It comes to recon that most people will not even use the note 3's power. Remember when intel/amd stopped chasing ghz? we got better dies, better threads, better heat, and better cpu's all around.
Samsung is chasing its own tail with hardware specs, and not making the device nor the OS overlay better (save multiwindow).
Sure aluminum, metal, titanium, magnesium alloys, vapor mag, etc may be there just to appease people. But internals are so 'run of the mill' now, that they need a differentiation.
79. AlbertAribe (Posts: 134; Member since: 21 Jun 2014)
Haha! We're not stupid to buy expensive phone like Apple iPhone because we like it and it simple to use.
JakeLee is true and no iPhones iOS competitive you only have to choice which iPhone model you gonna buy. In Androids, to many available and you will be confused which android is best phone or whatsoever called flagship.
96. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9846; Member since: 14 May 2012)
I don't think you can get more simple than Easy Mode on the S5... I mean seriously. Confused? Choice is confusing? Well I'll be damned. Billions of people around the world must be completely lost when buying a car.
117. willard12 (Posts: 1189; Member since: 04 Jul 2012)
1st sentence: We're not stupid.
2nd sentence: We're confused by too much choice.
124. Cicero (Posts: 703; Member since: 22 Jan 2014)
I started with iPhones. But I feeled frustated by being so restricted in what I can do according to my needs. So I moved on to Android Samsung's and I have none of my request not to be easy solve (printing with my old network Xerox printer, having ofice files protected with pasword, true windows multitasking etc. - android power combining with Sammy hardware).
119. alaw.14 (Posts: 222; Member since: 10 Sep 2013)
Your talking about something 3 years ago. Samsung makes almost double the revenue if apple.
130. Philipand96 (Posts: 92; Member since: 12 Jul 2014)
Apple has the highest % markup of all vendors.
Apple % markup is possibly a significant percentage of ALL Android vendors combined.
China #1 cell phone owners.
The latest information I read is that based on smartphone sales in China in the last quarter
2nd) Samsung (by just 200,000 over
Xiaomi Mi 4 prices are $320 & $400 16GB & 64GB
Huawei Honor 6 is $370 16GB
As you can see both these Chinese base companies are offer 4G LTE 13Mp at least Quad core phone, for approx HALF the price of a NOTE 3
Apart for screen size the specs are comparable to 13Mp NOTE 3
Xiaomi have already displaced both Apple then Samsung to reach the #1 position
Lenovo have just displaced Apple and already nearing Samsung
For me I don’t understand why Apple have moved the event up 10 days to 09/0/9/2014 as it gains nothing if one of the phones is to be released much later
If Apple fear Samsung will capture sales with the NOTE4 it may well do.
Whilst Apple is doing well in the US, the Asia market is in decline
Samsung are already losing market share, but this will have an even bigger impact on Apple
The base prices for the 4.7” and 5.5” iPhones in China are $850 & $1012, any switch is a potential loss, the loss per Apple IPhone is much more due to the profit mark up included in the cost
re Asia IMO it should not be seen as upgrading the phone to get say the NOTE 4, but making a sale, despite what the customer has bought before, paying near double to get the few feature on a NOTE 4 not on a Xiaomi is a big ask, and the specs of the Mi 4 are more than the average person requires
63. Vexify (banned) (Posts: 570; Member since: 16 Jun 2014)
Lol. You just explained your own argument. Samsung sells more than Apples (2 phones) with their every class and price known to man on the market. GG.

"people will either buy iPhone6 or heavily subsided GN3. It looks really bad for Sammy."
Samsung is not stopping here. And you know it.
Do we really believe that you iboys, and menial media and anallists are so concerned to help Samsung to smash Apple totally?
56. Doakie (Posts: 1660; Member since: 06 May 2009)
I don't see how that's reality.... Maybe wishful thinking...
64. JakeLee (banned) (Posts: 1021; Member since: 02 Nov 2013)
The brand new GS5 wasn't able to beat the *8 months old* iPhone5s in May.
How will the brand new GN4 fare against the *brand new* iPhone6 with long-awaited bigger screen?
Much worse. It isn't rocket science.
70. elitewolverine (Posts: 3461; Member since: 28 Oct 2013)
especially when people are still paying off their note 3's either through contract or through payments....
74. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9846; Member since: 14 May 2012)
In the US, yes. Worldwide? Different story. It's no secret Americans flock to the iPhone. It's easy to use and small. People are stepping out of the 4" barrier and jumping to 5"+ screens, which is why Samsung is successful.
78. neela_akaash (Posts: 524; Member since: 05 Aug 2014)
Apple said for 5S "world's most perfect size with a 4 inch display". After one month they will again repeat the same statement with another size, and it will become a best-seller.
89. syncronyze (Posts: 103; Member since: 26 Apr 2014)
Show me the proof that they said that, lol
107. Ashoaib (Posts: 2881; Member since: 15 Nov 2013)
they did said... infact steve jobs said 3.5inch is the best size when he was alive
109. syncronyze (Posts: 103; Member since: 26 Apr 2014)
This was also about 3 or 4 years ago when no one even envisioned a large screen phone... Steve sure as hell wasn't right but at the same time no one had this vision of a 5" screen in their mind at the time.
Not to mention he probably just said it to get more people interested in the iPhone. 3.5 is perfect... for someone with baby hands.
125. Cicero (Posts: 703; Member since: 22 Jan 2014)
Be happy with the new larger screen iPhone6 which is coming. I'm still asking myself how you could stay trapped so long in Apple tiny screen world until now concerning your big expectations about the new larger screen coming.

Samsung needs to lower the pricetag of their devices or continue failing.
18. GreekGeek (Posts: 1017; Member since: 22 Mar 2014)
Reality check : Yes they are
Dwindling customer base can be counted as ''failing''
21. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9846; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Are we forgetting Apple had the same result?
25. GreekGeek (Posts: 1017; Member since: 22 Mar 2014)
Apple has NO competition in their ecosystem, that is the difference.
Loyal customers will buy any new Apple product for as long as they can afford it
That is certainly NOT the case with Samsung..... too much competition in the Android space, willing to sacrifice their profit margins in order to take Samsung down.
If you're gonna ask me who's going to FAIL first, then it's most likely SAMSUNG, not Apple
29. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9846; Member since: 14 May 2012)
You totally missed my point. Apple dropped their smartphone shipments, just like Samsung, but you don't dare to say they're failing. "The iPhone 6 is going to be released next month!" So? The Galaxy Note 4 is being released next month also so where's your logic?
81. iampayne (Posts: 321; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
The difference is people don't flock to the Note Series like they flock to the Galaxy S or even the iPhone. The difference is the Note 4 will not sell as well as the S5 which in its own right isn't selling as well as Samsung and the analysts would like it too. The Note 4 regardless of how good it is, is a niche product because of its size.
102. HansGoneInsane (unregistered)
The difference is that GN Series is not really a high volume series. Phablets aren't attractive for most users. Compared to the regular size smartphones sold by Samsung, GN series is neglectable.
104. tedkord (Posts: 7356; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
It's clearly not negligible, or Apple wouldn't be following them into it.
But yes, it's not as big a market as the S series.
36. banglazbless (Posts: 55; Member since: 05 Feb 2014)
Fail at doing what idiot? You think an entity as big as Samsung can falter by not selling as well as last year? Apple and every other company will fall first before you'll ever see Samsung falls. You're underestimate how enormous Samsung is. You'll die a thousand death before they fall.
48. Commentator (Posts: 2909; Member since: 16 Aug 2011)
In 2010, the average human life-expectancy was 67.2 years. If he dies a thousand times at the rate of one death every 67.2 years, it will take an average of 67,200 years for Samsung to fall, all things remaining equal.
Not disagreeing, just an interesting stat I found! :)
91. elitewolverine (Posts: 3461; Member since: 28 Oct 2013)
Said every single tech giant...IBM said that, while they have not fallen, where is the IBM phone?
What samsung has done is taken the 'premium' out of their brands. When you have 40 different models seperated by a name for most part. It is hard to say 'im awesome'.
Also Nokia at one point was the highest phone manufactuer for years, by not adjusting to the market quick enough they are now gone. Motorola same thing. Hell it was Moto who made android big with their 'dddrroooidddd' campaign.
If samsung doesnt watch it, they will fall the wayside. They might not fall to the bottom but they will no longer be the 'leader'.
103. HansGoneInsane (unregistered)
Samsung will certainly not fail. But Samsung will certainly loose its dominant position in the Android world. Samsung's profits will decrease. Why is that so? Because Samsung is simply nothing special. Their brand is replaceable. If Samsung had disappeared tomorrow, the company would have been forgotten after 3 months and another company would take over the position Samsung currently has.
10. 0xFFFF (Posts: 3806; Member since: 16 Apr 2014)
I concur. Price is key. Samsung can make a very competent Note device, we know this. All they need to do is lower the price, so more customers can afford it.
IMO, this is why so many device makers are offering multiple versions of the same device. Because they know some segments of the market are more price sensitive than others, certainly more than in the past.
I wonder if the Note 4 will be "the beast" followed by the "Neo" or if they will do a "Note 4 Prime" sort of thing like they did with the S5.
13. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9846; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Apple has a high price tag and they're not failing. Not anytime soon.
27. neela_akaash (Posts: 524; Member since: 05 Aug 2014)
That's because apple has a huge fan-base of morons...

iPhone 5S - $649 16GB
Galaxy S5 - $599-649 16GB + SD card support
Apple racked in billions last quarter due to their high price tags. High price tags =/= failing. By your logic, Bose and Beats would be out of business.
