The low-cost Apple iPhone rumored to be coming will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor under the hood according to analysts at Detwiler Fenton, as a way to differentiate the phone from the premium version of the Apple iPhone; using the Qualcomm chip will also save Apple some money which would keep margins respectable for a low-priced handset...

That's what I was trying to figure out, where would it fall performance wise. I can't see people wanting anything less than the performance they may see on an ip4 or 4S. So will these chips be as good or better than the A5 or A6? (Forgive me if the chip numbers are wrong, but you get what I'm saying)

It said snapdragon, not krait. More than likely your looking at a dual core krait at best, most likely a dual core snapdragon at worst.

I'm not so sure this is the best move for Apple. Might be good for consumers on the lookout for a good deal, but Apple (and with that APPL)? No.
Why? Multiple screen sizes, multiple processors, lower-end devices differentiating user experiences... anyone remember when "fragmentation" was a buzzword?
It sound like Apple is actively trying to bring it back and apply it to themselves.
And, with their long-term marketing showcasing their products as something that "just works" the regular consumer certainly will buy the low end devices for that lil' Apple logo on the back, as they're still expecting them to be backed up by Apple quality. That will be some more profit margin erosion for them. They'll still have a large number of sales and a lot of profit on revenue, but APPL is going to be hit right in the junk.
I guess Tim Cook said not to fear cannibalization because, well... he's a cannibal.

Low end usually means a dual core, small screen, and easily bent/scratch materials
iPhone 5 has all three
Why not just lower the prices on the iPhone4s?

Any smart phone with a screen of 5 inch and price greater than 13k (roughly $250 inclusive of all taxes) gets unaffordable. This is where Micromax is really dominating the market.

I've just about had it with these analysts coming up with their stupid theories and predictions especially about Apple !!
For Apple switching to another type of chip maker and architecture doesn't make a lot of sense. Why?? Because all their iPhones ar made on the Cortex ARM (which until recently were provided by Samsung) especially their own custom SoC found on the 4S and 5, and the entire iOS is designed to run on these chips.
If you don't have any idea what I'm talking (just like these analysts) then you won't understand what I am saying. But I know I'm right.

now, i think they will use the a5 processor like the ipod touch and the ipad mini, but if they make a cheaper 4 inch phone, then what will happen to the ipod touch?, and talking about a 3.5 inch phone, they already have the iphone 4 which will receive the latest software updates for years, and they also have the ipod touch 4g (16 gb) for $199
so, the cheaper iphone will reduce the sales of the older iphones and the ipod touches, so it doesn't make sense......
I have seen that many people love 4 inch phones because they can be used with one hand, its a good size, but now its time to make a 6 inch phablet with a few widgets and a couple of live tiles on the same simple, refined UI, and a phablet does not require to be small enough to be used with one hand.......instead of making cheaper phones, they should sell the older phones for cheaper rates and concentrate on a phablet( it should start at $249 with a contract and $699 unlocked....to retain their profit margin)
and after making an ipad mini with a6 and retina display, the older ipad mini should be sold for $279
they just can't make more money with a cheaper iphone

Qualcomm dual is terrible. Exynos quad complete dominates it. Exynos dual a15 annihilates Qualcomm. Even Apple's A6 beats sloppy Qualcomm.

How is a dual core Krait S4 terrible? It powers most high end phones of 2012, and also the beloved S3, which powers it just fine. And Quad core Krait is obviously even better. And as far as power efficiency, I think Krait is actually good.

actually, ios is optimized for apple a series processors, so even if they use a two year old a5 processor and 512 mb ram, it will run all the latest apps and games for years...and the device will also run very well.....and this is not the same thing with android, so even very powerful processors may not be enough,they will not run all the games after a period of time
but seriously, i don't think apple needs a cheaper iphone, they should make a phablet like samsung......
