Analyst: Nokia Lumia 1020 and Sony Xperia Z both off to a slow start in the states

0. phoneArena 29 Jul 2013, 20:20 posted on

Wall Street analyst William Power toils for R.W. Baird and as part of his job, he checked out AT&T and T-Mobile stores to get the lay of the land on a couple of hot phones; the two handsets are the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Sony Xperia Z. Ever since CES at Las Vegas in January, the Sony Xperia Z has captured quite a buzz with its water and dust resistant capabilities and top-shelf specs...

"plus the hassle of learning a whole new OS (Windows Phone 8), are two of the factors keeping sales down."

Memo to Elop & Nokia board of directors: Take note - your decision to go exclusively WP is costing you sales. Sammy managed to sell 20 m of the Note II at a retail price similar to that of the L1020, so it isn't price that is holding back sales of the L1020.

As i repeated down below Doug, this is a story about Nokia AND Sony starting with slow sales. Sony HAS Android. It is not a street paved with Gold.

well for sony its quite ok
because xperia z was launched in january ,8 months ago
so now there are more better options available in android
as.sony put xperia z late in states
and xperia z already sold well and good in other countries,
but this lumia 1020 is brand new
and still.its having a slow start
so nokia shud really do something
as already samsung has taken a huge lead again this quarter or year

so if nokia sells 1 million phones, you consider that as "selling millions" ?

the sales of all nokia WP8 phones are bad when compared to the rest of the competition.

It doesnt matter how many they sell when you compare to other companies - They might be very low compared to Samsung, but they need to achieve two things first - raise the userbase of windows phone (so that it gains enough attention for developers to develop more apps for it) and go back to profitability. Both of these 2 things require an increase in sales every quarter, but not necessarily shooting up to Samsung's sales numbers in a short period of time.

The problem with most people here, they dont welcome more choices, having another 2 or 3 OS at most in addition to iOS and Android in the smartphone market isnt a bad thing. You can choose whatever you like, but it doesnt mean you can force your opinions on others.

We welcome choices if its better than available earlier in market... So NO-NO for WP.. Infact we are eagerly waiting for Ubuntu and sail-fish OS... If they again turned to be like another WP, then again NO-NO for them too...

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a Samsung fanboi and I can tel you that the Galaxy s4 zoom is crap. That being said the Nokia's 1020 "camerphone" is crap as well. Only hardcore Windows/Nokia fanbois will buy that phone but soccer moms will buy the crappy S4 zoom just because it's Samsung/Google.
No wonder that Nokia VP was complaining today.

IMO, tiles. Same reason W8 computers aren't selling as well as 7 did when it was first released. It is a nice platform, but too rigid on what changes you can make to it. Android is king for reasons like that and even Apple is giving people customization options these days.

In W8 you have a desktop mode, why not do that for phones? Let me choose to not use tiles and I'd be more likely to buy one.

"DON'T FEED THE TROLL"
A troll usually has little or no interest in contributing to the development of the site in question and is interested in some or all of the following:
-Deliberately angering people.
-Breaking the normal flow of debate/discussion.
-Disrupting the smooth operation of the site.
-Deliberately being annoying for the sake of being obnoxious. For instance, using abusive names to refer to all the members on the site.
-Pretending to be profoundly ignorant or stupid, gleaning some weird sense of having "won" when other users subsequently come to believe this.

I believe it comes from when people say could've to mean could have. when you're typing quickly, or if you pick up the habit, I would imagine "could" and "of" could be typed based on the similar sound. just a theory. :)

Even if Nokia/Sony had spent millions of dollars in ad, the result would have been the same, because neither company had products like the S series. Samsung have been successful because they had great ad campaign plus great products. Nokia and Sony lacked both, not just ad money.

What ???
I actually seen quite a lot of xperia z/zl around , they are cheaper (unlocked) than Galaxy s4(both variant)/HTC One .
In this country google nexus 4 wasnt sold by Google but LG , making it around usd 450 for the 16GB model . Also , most phones here are sold unlocked /
The Zl is just beautiful and good value , personally i like the slim bezel and i dont need/want to pay extra for a fingerprint magnet and waterprove stuff . It's upper mid range price territory yet still hold its own against GS4/HTC ONE

Hmmmm...... negative stories about horrid sales after the 1020 has been out, like what- 15 mnutes?? REALLY???

I do not think anyone who looks at mobile with an open mind did not realize the 1020 was not going to be a 20 million unit seller, It is exclusive to one carrier, it is pricey, and it is a device aimed at a very specific buyer. Excuse me for being the one to stae the obvious, but it will take a few months to judge this.

As for Sony, they have been fighting for shelf space VS. Sammy, HTC, and Motorola, at least here in the states. They are a high class device maker and I truly believe they will be fine. But again, give it time.

And as a side note, the struggles of Sony with Android on it show once for all that a Nokia Android device would not be a slam dunk all the WP bashers on our site seem to think it would be. If Sony is struggling for sales, so would Nokia. Period.

"If Sony is struggling for sales, so would Nokia. Period."

Sony's travail is due to overdosing on stupid pills - releasing their phones in the U.S. on the 2nd and 4th size carriers is a plan to FAIL, second only in magnitude of stupidity to Nokia's exclusivity with AT&T. Between VZW and Sprint, Sony is giving the middle-fingered wave to 47% of the U.S. cellular market (31% (VZW) and 16% (Sprint)). Nokia's exclusivity with AT&T is costing it an additional 12% from T-Mo. Say goodbye to 59% of the market.

If I had produced a business plan when I was looking for venture funding in one of my businesses that said I was going to pass on 47% or 59% of the market for the software development I was looking to fund, I would have had a promising career as a comedian, but not an entrepreneur.

snow, when you are looking to grow market share, making your product incompatible with a large segment of the market is almost a certain way to not make sales. An Android edition of the L1020 might not have made 20 m in sales, but not offering an Android edition coupled with being exclusive to AT&T is almost a guarantee of minimal sales.

I am not arguing strategy, Doug. Like I said above, Nokia's decision to go with AT&T only is like taking off your shoes before you kick a football. More then likely you are going to really stub your own toe.

It's just silly to think Nokia's decision to enter into an exclusive contract with MS is the sole reason for their sluggish sales. Android is the standard, and if I am close it is 65% of worldwide sales. But Samsung is like 40% of those sales (which is close to 75% of Android sales). That leaves about 20-25 OEM's fighting for the last 15% of worldwide sales. Nokia would still most likely be in the single digit % of those sales, just as they are now. But what they get with WP is 250 mill a quarter from MS for development and a developing ecosystem they are king of. As long as it continues to trend up, Nokia is okay. I think they are in year 3 going into year 4 of a five year deal with MS. In year 5, they can make decisions based on market performance and do it from a much leaner, efficient hardware company.

I would love to see Nokia do a line of Android phones. But I just don't get the "Nokia's troubles would be over if..." arguments when most posters are not looking at the whole picture.

and here in india , samsung is available in 12 months emi scheme with exchange. Whereas maximum nokia offering is 6 months..people are rather blind and copy cats, if they see a cheap crap used by anybdy else they will going to buy it as well. Thats the case vid two top sellers.. Nokia,s marketing strategy is rather limited as compared to sammy. Same goes for htc which which dosent even have 10% of of marketing that sammy does here in india. Marketing plays a huge part and so does advt. Nokia should rather put more effort on how sophisticated windows os is. Cause even chinese companies are now manufacturing way too much better phones then the top selling oem.. Take the example of mmx, karbonn, lava, cellkon etc who sell sort f same identical stuff at low prices then sammy, and they have eaten its market. Whereas on the ther hand i cant see any awesum windows mobile other then nokia, and no cheap chinese companies with windows.... Dats a big added advantage like iphns. Gear up nokia long way to go
