A chart made by Raymond James analyst said in an illustrated research note to clients that the Apple iPhone 4, Apple iPhone 4S and Apple iPhone 5 have together out sold Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy Note smartphones by a wide margin; the numbers show Apple selling 219 million units of the Apple iPhone vs. 131 million handsets for Samsung...

No surprise here.
The fact that Samsung managed to shape up a product that is actually getting comparable with iPhone in terms of the market and cultural impact is the biggest deal actually.
The S4 should be neck-to -neck with the iPhone 6 in terms of sales
60. metalpoet (unregistered) posted on 17 Jan 2013, 19:55 5
What they should compare is each version of each product when they came out so for example:gs 1 vs. iphone, gs2 vs. iphone 3g, gs3 vs iphone 3gs, and so on and so forth. Samsung has made 5 different legit models for the galaxy line: galaxy, gs2, gs3, note, and note 2. compared to iphone making 6 different iphones.
67. Cynipap999 (banned) posted on 17 Jan 2013, 20:25 5
Actually, your comparison chart is slightly off since the Galaxy S3 is a better phone than the iPhone 5; iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 would make a better and more accurate comparison against the Galaxy S3. The upcoming Galaxy S4 won't have an Apple iPhone counterpart or competitor so, any attempted comparison by analysts or tech blogs will be null and void upon delivery.
As far as previous models, the following statements are true (as they would relate for comparison):
iPhone 4 / iPhone 4S vs Galaxy S II
iPhone 3GS vs Galaxy S
iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia II

This whole comparison is stupid to me. So the article is telling me that every smartphone Apple ever sold, sold more than a section of Samsung smartphones. That's pretty obvious to begin with. You could say that apple only sold 6 different smartphones compared to samsung's hundreds but if you have less of a selection more people will pick the same thing. I see so many people with metro pcs Samsung smartphones so this is just stupid in my opinion.
109. Mindmeld posted on 18 Jan 2013, 14:24 2
True enough. If you want to compare high-end phones, all of Samsung's high-end devices (Android, WP8, other??) should be included instead of just the GS series. Plus, you have to keep in mind that Samsung is not only competing against iPhone but devices from other OEMs. If you are in the market for an iOS phone, you have but one choice. Apple is a monopoly. Not so when it comes to Android phones. There are other great alternatives to GS. With all that being considered, I think Samsung is holding its own against Apple.

89. abdane posted on 18 Jan 2013, 00:55 1
samsung announced 100 million galaxy s phones sold 3 days ago, and the latest was the GS3, thats 3 phones, when apple announced 100 million it was when the iPhone 4 was the latest, thats 4 phones, and the iPhone back then was the "thing" ! so samsung outsold apple comparing first by first, not latest by latest and that's how it should be compared ^_^
69. cheetah2k posted on 17 Jan 2013, 20:36 2
The whole report is flawed. This compares one company (Apple) pushing one type of operating system (iOS), where as Samsung is one company pushing Android which is pushed by several companies all in competition for Android sales..
The only way this comparison could be fair, is if Samsung was the only handset manufacturer offering Android. You simply cant compare the two due to Apple's exclusivity on iOS...
Therefore, before Analyst Tavis McCourt sticks his iphone up his a55 and set to vibrate, how about making it a comparison of iOS devices vs Android devices and then see who wins in that battlefield....
71. cheetah2k posted on 17 Jan 2013, 20:44 2
Also, if we want to be picky, there are lots more "GALAXY" phones than what is covered in this report. Check this out
Yet another flaw in the report. Amazing stuff really
3. taz89 posted on 17 Jan 2013, 15:41 15
well that's a bit obvious considering the only ios phones you can get is iPhone where as Samsung It's not the only android maker.. its not really a 1 to 1 comparison is it...i think the main point here is how well Samsung have done to create a brand that is almost comparable to apples iPhone in a android market that has hundreds of phones released each year..

past performance is not an indicator of future success.
Apple fanatic researchers just need to get with the program. They might have USED to sell more, but that wave is crashing.
5. juanyunis posted on 17 Jan 2013, 15:50 10
This answer is amazing, simple but powerful, you are absolutely right about this, Samsung started with the huge success since Galaxy S2, and that was mid 2011.

My gosh these apple followers and their massive defense of said products is sooo disturbing. Go apple Go! :/ 8th wonder of the world, why anyone cares that much about the few same ol same ol products this stale company produces at premium prices for less than premium technology.
10. appleDOESNT.com posted on 17 Jan 2013, 16:05 10
As far as i can tell, iP1 had 3 years of incremental upgrades and iP4, 3 years of incremental upgrades as well. iOS is stale and boring but hey the new iP5 is weirdly taller, has this fabulous new port that forces millions of purchased adapters or all new accessories, and iP5S's more of the same in flashy new colors and maybe a second screen size. Apple's magic is gone, they had a 5 or so year run that took them from nothing to something but history will repeat itself and apple in less than 5 years will be no were near the top of the technology world, sorry apple fans, the writing is on the wall. Even apple fans are sick of the apple shtick, just ins't compelling any longer...

I like the iPhone 5 over the 4s is because of the 16:9 wide screen ratio .
I don't see you complain when Samsung went wide screen with the galaxy s3 ?
72. cheetah2k posted on 17 Jan 2013, 20:49 3
Ironically, in Jobs stage release of the original iPhone, he proudly stood forth and said that iOS was 5 years ahead of every other phone OS out there (even without MMS and 3G :p).
Yet here we are 5+ years and nothing has changed... Sounds like RIM all over again.. Go figure.

and iPhone really only does great in America, where apple has some clout (but it's fading fast as their sctick does stink and everybody knows it now). In amerioca, where roughly 40% of techies think that technology is seen through the narrow vision of Apple's eye :( iSad.

Graph show Sept to Dec IP5 sales at 40 million + (from the graph).
Other analyst claims 35 million for IP5 during same period --http://www.phonearena.com/news
A difference of 5 million between 2 analysts or this is some kind of a joke or logical question would be who got paid m ore for doing the analysis :)

That's had to bunch up sales for Apple from 2 1/2 yrs to come up with better numbers then Samsung? What a joke. They merged the 4 , 4S and 5 all together. Samsung only started being big one and half yrs ago. The first galaxy S was outsold by HTC models.
They should of went Android vs Apple.
Stop trying to come up with ways to make it look like Apple is still #1 when its not. Still laughing at 2 1/2 yrs back. Lol.

I thought that the battle was Apple vs Android. Even though I have a Note 2 I want HTC, Motorola, Sony and LG to release killer devices. I don't want all my Android eggs in one basket. I don't want Samsung to have 90% of the market. I want each Android OEM trying to one up another. Only way we can have competition within Android.
Apple may have won a battle with this article but Android is clearly winning the war for the last 2 years. 2013 is all Android yet again.

Stop hating on Apple, Samsung has built a great brand but the iphone is two iterations ahead. Give sammy the time it needs and it'll b neck n neck. Next year is pivotal for apple, if they make the copycat 5S its over...they need a game changer like the note 2 or something.

I'm not the fanboy people think I am, I'm more of a straight shooter. I like apple, but I think they've lost their edge. Samsung has come from the eternity in 08 to the note 2 in 2012. Apples come no where near that far in innovation. I call it like I see it, and I see Samsung taking over. By the way I typed this from my note 2

Only thing I hate is its only got 16gigs and no sd slot. For me that's a deal breaker. My notes only 16 but I have a 32 gig sd n it, and the file manager lets me move what u want to the sd. Game changer is the note 2

It is really surprising how many dumb people are still there, who are willing to give $800-900 for a piece of cheap, breakable asian electronics with buggy, stolen OS. Amazing. For such pile of money you could buy Apple, BB, Nokia, even HTC is better. Really amazing.
43. Sniggly posted on 17 Jan 2013, 18:48 4
I'm sorry, what now? "Cheap..." Apple profits more from its electronics. Should tell you that Samsung actually spends more on their phones. "Breakable..." someone brought in an iPhone 5 recently that was in a case, was dropped on its back, and the front screen still shattered. "Asian..." Shouldn't knock Asian stuff. As much as I dislike Toyota and Honda, for instance, they get top rank for dependability. Also, iPhones are made in China. That's about as azn as it gets. "Buggy, stolen OS..." Really? In daily usage my original Note displays very little in the way of bugs or issues. It's not completely perfect, but then again, neither is iOS. And stolen? From who?
Blackberries have no redeeming qualities outside their email interface at present. Apple is okay, but not nearly worth as much as people seem to think. Nokia makes good hardware, but they need to pull their heads out of Ballmer's ass and diversify. And yes, HTC makes good stuff.
However, Samsung's done a good job of marketing their products and at this point their higher end phones do have a track record of working to a good extent. They're even converting a fair share of iPhone lovers. Perhaps even you might like an S3.

so attacking another competetitor is good marketing.. I will let Coke and other brands that have been doing it wrong
94. Sniggly posted on 18 Jan 2013, 02:11 1
You're honestly going to tell me that no company besides Samsung has ever poked fun at a competitor?
Samsung balances out the "attacking" with showcasing their own product's features and advantages. So yeah, good marketing.
I mean, up until the Galaxy S commercials the only *good* Android phone commercial I ever saw was for the original Droid, which incidentally ALSO "attacked" the iPhone while addressing a perceived weakness of the Droid and turning it into a strength:
Between the Samsung commercials and that piece of awesomeness, all we really saw were Verizon's commercials, which I personally liked for their ballsy sci fi ness, but which I knew would not resonate with most people who already are pretty f**king afraid of technology:
And then there was this commerical, which again I personally liked, but which didn't really resonate with audiences either:
Samsung started out strong with this commercial, which I remember being seen in movie theaters:
And then kept their marketing completely down to earth with their Next Big Thing ads, which I've already covered.
Oh yeah, the overlong responses from Sniggly are back! for a limited time only.
