Amazon says no smartphone this year, no free phone ever

Back on Friday, we told you about an interesting rumor that could change things around drastically in the low end of the smartphone industry; the buzz focused on the oft-rumored Amazon smartphone. According to a couple of former WSJ journalists, not only is the Amazon smartphone real, it would be offered free without a contract...

If it sounds too good to be true...well, you know the rest.

While Amazon could broaden its tech influence by introducing a smartphone to go with its tablet lineup, putting the price at zero would have been ridiculous. Even with ad support, subscription-based services, etc., Amazon would lose more than they gain.

There's still hope for next year, or maybe even this year, if Amazon is pulling our leg...
