Students what do you think about getting a nexus 7 instead ?

While the Nexus7 is certainly a better product, most students I've seen, appear to be attracted to a slighly larger screen to supplement their laptops.
In my opinion, the Kindle Fire 8.9 hits this sweet spot for students. It concentrates on informational reading material, has most all of the educational fundamentals, has the larger screen and most importantly; it is inexpensive.
