The star from 30 Rock Alec Baldwin got in trouble yesterday for his addiction to Zynga's Words with Friends game. He was playing on his iPhone while waiting for an American Airlines flight to depart, but dismissed the flight attendants' usual annoying warnings to turn off all cell phones and other electronic equipment before takeoff...

But we need to switch off mobiles before take-off. Or at least airplane mode.

its not about the game,
its about thinking your above the rules. The game only got it publicity on this website. the underlying ACTUAL story is

do as your told on a flight. DO NOT argue with your attendants or you will be removed from the flight, no matter how important u think u are. They do not play around on American flights.

i agree remix.

there is plenty of room to question their rules, but not while in the act of paying for their service. if you dont like it, dont fly with them.

Could be also a publicity stunt by Zynga to further promote WWF... just speculation though... :) they are after all waiting on the IPO as the article stated...

AB: What/who's AB. AA: Alcoholics Anonymous. WWF?: World Wrestling Federation. Well that's what I thought.

Although I'm a great fan of Alec Baldwin, I'm glad they threw him off the flight! The phone's signal interfers with the plane's communication and radar equipments and could endanger the safety of the flight. If I were there, I would have been the first to complain about it and asked that he be booted off the plane for his refusal to power down his whatever phone!

If you actually believe that modern cellphones can interfere with any system on a modern plane, much less its "communication and radar equipments", I have some ocean front property on the moon you may be interested in...

its proven to be myth and not real, I think Mythbusters did that as well as the gas station one (Where a cell phone can trigger an explosive so they tell you to turn off your phone).

yeah right, you know better than American Airlines on what is, or is not, safe to use in-flight in their planes!

They just enjoy stopping people arbitrarily from using gadgets on-board without any reason whatsoever!

There is a reason. Customers routinely complain about others customers talking on their cell phones. There is apparently something about another person taking part in a conversation that cannot be completely followed that people find annoying. A question which needs to be queried to a behavioral psychologist no doubt.

Very true, it's so annoying listening to the guy or girl, who is talking loud, disrupting others, and thinking he is important.

Youre suppose TOO TURN OFF your PHONE before take off and landing. Its called safety procedures. I remember seeing a lady in the airplane while on her iPhone before taking off AFTER the flight attendant said to please turn it off but still was on her phone.

It's true that cell phones have to be off upon departure or arrival. It is not necesarily for radio interference, but more as a security measure. Nonetheless, if the plane hasn't pushed back and the plane has not closed the door, the flight attendant, while well within his or her powers to demand the phone be turned off, he or she could have gave Baldwin a reminder and kept doing his or her job and IF the phone was ON when the pilot announces the door check and preparation for departure (meaning the plane is about to depart), then lay down the law and kick Alec Baldwin out.

Having said that, and remembering this jerk from AA who basically jumped on my case for reading an e-book while the doors were opened and then came every two minutes to make sure that my e-book reader was off, despite the fact that it was in the seat pocket, Alec Baldwin was also a total jerk. Yeah the flight attendant was rude, and yeah he makes more money than this person, but in that plane, he or she (as annoying a martinet the attendant may be) is the law. Turn the darned iPhone and wait till the plane levels off and make sure it's on airplane mode.

Nonetheless, the electronic effects of cell phones to the airplane's instruments, is minimal. It is a matter how it affects the network below and the annoyance factor of a some person spending six hours in a Transcontinental flight yaking it out. Anyone remember that passenger that got kicked out of a QUIET Amtrak car for talking for OVER 17 hours?!?!?!?
