Acer executive: If Nokia goes with Android, they'd be a force to be reckoned with
0. phoneArena 14 Jun 2013, 13:50 posted on
At Computex, Acer hinted that they might be releasing a Windows Phone 8 model in the first half of next year; Acer's vice president for the EMEA region, Allen Burnes, subsequently said that building an Acer branded Windows Phone 8 model is not in the cards right now. The executive said that sales and volume are important to Acer, and Android provides the results that the company wants...

I'd love to buy a Nokia handset running the latest Android.
Ooh, dat camera!

I couldnt imagine what their skin would look like
52. Deaconclgi (Posts: 405; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
Their skin would look like Nokia Belle FP2 that is on the 808, just in a higher resolution and that would make all the difference. Belle FP2 already shares similarities and behavior with Android.

See, like this:

This is the funniest if not most hilarious bunch of comments I've read in a long time. It seems like 98% of people on this site wants Nokia to make an Android device. Here's the funny part. I thought Android devices were suppose to be good. If 98% of these commentors want Nokia to join the Android family it speaks volumes. It tells me Android users have low esteem in their own Android products and that they aren't worth crap. Maybe this is why Android fans despise iOS. They actually know their devices are second class. And they really need a great device. It must say a lot that Nokia themselves doesn't want to contaminate their phones with Android. Man I can't stop laughing.

Great comment. Agree with you 200%. If you look at the "mad robot" handsets, there are just a few that are worthy, most of them are cheap quality, poor performance devices. And overtime, performance sucks even more as the software slows to a crawl....... It seems that people get dumber by the day......... Just read the recent articles all over the internet and you'll find a lot of interesting cues to what should happen in the future........
1- Samsung is going the Tinzen road
2- Samsung is making 95% of the profits in android headsets
3- Google wants stock android phones, less customization to try to avoid the horrific fragmentation
4- HTC is crumbling down, despite having very good handsets
5- Motorola is alive because Google pours in money in them (wait, isn't Motorola a Google company??? The hell, they should be the #1 android maker out there......)
To be very honest, the ONLY thing android has today is apps, if it weren't for that..........

Nokia running Android will never happen.
17. Federated (Posts: 261; Member since: 06 Mar 2010)
Never say never. Nokia is probably feeling the pressure from its shareholders and fans every single second of the day. In business you have to satisfy the customers period.
24. maxican16 (Posts: 364; Member since: 29 Sep 2011)
Exactly. And besides, I was just stating how much I'd love that. Nokia would hopefully leave it untouched, just like Windows 8.
87. deburocks (Posts: 126; Member since: 20 Apr 2013)
Nokia was also in badwagon along with othr oem,s . But there were some issues with google which led it to drop the idea of android( as there wer certain cnditions that google put). Nokia already had maemo in the pipeline. But the only issue it faced was lack of money and non supporting android apps and games.. When symbian was dying there was no running cash for nokia, so msft ( elope obviously) made a deal where windows became the primary focus of nokia as an o.s and meego was abondoned. although there is very low possibility of nokia running into android as now windows has already gained fame ( through nokia obviuosly, they couldnot make it through htc, palm and dell).....but i agree with acer and the writer of the article that if nokia decides to jump then it will definatly dethrone anybdy and will create its own identity(. Even though there are now thousands of companies worldwide with android as a base) but personally i feel sony and htc are doing good as well with their own skins and custom u.i. .

Only when they sack Flop out of the company.
We all know Flop is Microsoft's puppet.
64. jdoee100 (Posts: 334; Member since: 04 Jun 2013)
It's so stupid. Nokia basically already has the hardware, they just need to put android into their devices. Then there you have it, your nokia android phone. They'd probably be able to double their smartphone share overnight. stupid.
69. -box- (Posts: 3991; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
You need the production capacity for that, and after Nokia's restructuring I don't think they're there yet.
68. -box- (Posts: 3991; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
I wouldn't say "never", bit after a huge foundation-up revamp of android and not being within the confines of a contract with Microsoft, I could see them maybe toeing the waters. Nokia expects a lot out of its handsets, as do its customers, and right now (and previously) android doesn't deliver, and Windows Phone is as close as they can get for now. I would guess they'd probably go with Sailfish before Android though.

Everybody is wating for Android powered Nokia device. I hope they will consider it!
42. Federated (Posts: 261; Member since: 06 Mar 2010)
They should. The world is waiting and on their knees begging and pleading.
45. MartyK (Posts: 808; Member since: 11 Apr 2012)
That will not for two reason--
1st, Elop & Nokian is in denial about the power of Android.
2nd, WPFan will not stand for this (even at the cost of bring Nokia down to last place)...oops they are in last place....smh
63. lyndon420 (Posts: 4158; Member since: 11 Jul 2012)
Same here. I'd be more than willing to give that a go if it were to happen before microsoft buys them up.
78. ihatesmartphone (unregistered)
If only Stephen Elop agree with you..
2. abcdefgh (banned) (Posts: 471; Member since: 29 Mar 2013)
nokia would consider android if lumia series wont pay off but as you all know lumia sales are in agreement with nokias expectations.so.....no nokiadroid.
57. ncarlosmiguel (Posts: 206; Member since: 14 May 2013)
Nokia should really go android but they shouldn't drop WP8, they're doing a good job with it.
91. ihatesmartphone (unregistered)
They should be open about this...
But its kinda weird to just depend on one platform..
3. Jason2k13 (Posts: 1213; Member since: 28 Mar 2013)
I would gladly buy a Nokia running on android, but its bulkyness and thick bezels kinda turns me off.
19. Diazene (Posts: 129; Member since: 01 May 2013)
bezels are important to prevent accidental presses
38. Yeahman (Posts: 34; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
That's mostly true for tablets, but phones such as the Xperia ZL or Galaxy S4 don't have that problem despite their thin bezels.
35. skinny95black (Posts: 113; Member since: 06 Jan 2013)
well you can't say bulkiness after the 925
6. Federated (Posts: 261; Member since: 06 Mar 2010)
It's no secret that a Nokia with an Android OS would end up on top of all Android devices. Nokia will increase their profit by 400% in just a quarter. Can you imagine a Nokia smartphone with 1080p 5-inch screen running Android 5 (Key Lime Pie) powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 with 41MP PureView sensor! Wow! Easily the undisputed phone of all time.
8. vandroid (Posts: 328; Member since: 04 Sep 2012)
nokia isnt living up to their full potential on windows
26. maxican16 (Posts: 364; Member since: 29 Sep 2011)
I'd disagree. Rather it's Windows itself who isn't living up to expectations.
31. jibraihimi (Posts: 755; Member since: 29 Nov 2011)
It's not fault of Nokia, it's Microsoft who are going too slow in upgrading and developing WP OS, then their restrictions are also hurting Nokia. Microsoft said they have included support for upto 72 cores in WP8, but they hadn't activated it on it, they should have brought out support for FullHd screen last year itself,, but they stopped at support for HD screens, hope this year onwards Microsoft will pull it's sock, and we will see rapid pace of development in WP(but bad thing about hope is that, it always remain hope, especially in case of Microsoft)
37. vandroid (Posts: 328; Member since: 04 Sep 2012)
Micorosoft said windows 8 will support quad core and micro sd cards but I have yet to see a quad core windows 8 device and the Samsung ativ s has a micro sd slot
39. JaseelEbrahim (Posts: 31; Member since: 24 Jul 2012)
Are you talking about windows phone 8 or windows 8?
61. StreetNerd (Posts: 819; Member since: 08 Dec 2010)
but does it rly needs a quadcore? i mean WP is super fluid allready!
71. -box- (Posts: 3991; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
Windows Phone 8 supports up to 64 cores.
Yes, the Ativ series have MicroSD slots, as does all Lumias with a removable back, that is, 520, 521, 620, 820, 810, 822. Only the 510, 610, 710, 720, 800, 900, 920, 925, and 928 don't (as I recall).
89. jibraihimi (Posts: 755; Member since: 29 Nov 2011)
Microsoft had promised support for more than 60 cores in WP8, but they had only optimized it for dual cores, that's the reason we aren't seeing any quadcore WP8 phones, though there are many WP8 phones with micro SD slot, I think except Lumia 920/925/928 and HTC's WP8 offering all other manufacturers launched their WP8 phone with Micro sd slot......... With GDR3 update WP8 will be optimized for quadcore and octacore, and will also support FullHd screen............
20. mafiaprinc3 (Posts: 521; Member since: 07 May 2012)
if only microsoft will loosen up and bring the good features to windows phone that it needs and cut out the wall garden crap.if nokia had android phones they would dominate the market, samsung wouldn't even be close,i android would have a market share of about 70%.
but guess what wp8,ios and android are all need to continue the trend of innovation. if there was only android then there wouldn't be the drive to innovate, therefore the need for wp8, ios and android to pus boundries and new ideas!
11. Penny (Posts: 1647; Member since: 04 Feb 2011)
The way a lot of Android fans here talk about Nokia, you would think they would never by such a brick-like device whose only claim to fame is a camera.
But if Nokia were to ever make such a move, I bet suddenly everybody here would be praising the camera and saying "great build quality" instead of brick. Just watch; if they switch, this is exactly what will happen.
12. protozeloz (Posts: 5396; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
those days where people would not resort to this sort of post sure are missed, people hate Nokia, people here hate Samsung too and Samsung has android... people also hate HTC, and LG (I hate LG) but on that matter there are people who would love their favorite OS on their favorite maker and if that would include Nokia it would be nice. can we stop with this hate assumptions?
14. vandroid (Posts: 328; Member since: 04 Sep 2012)
I hate LG as well they copy off of other oems, HTC is my favorite
54. Penny (Posts: 1647; Member since: 04 Feb 2011)
You are right and I apologize for making that post. While I sincerely believe what I said in my statement, I was being immature in actually stirring the pot with the comment.
I love to have rational discussion that revolves around objective observations, but I had abandoned hope for that on much of the internet, especially here. That's just the truth; I'm jaded from the fanboyism and lack faith in people's ability to be objective and intelligent. But for the sake of not being one of those people that stirs the pot like this, I will try to shelve those types of comments unless it is a direct response to an individual.
65. protozeloz (Posts: 5396; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
Thanks, I've always like the way you post, even if I don't agree, some of us appreciate more than the average "x sucks y rocks" we get around here these days without reason, also its alright to be a fanboy. when our products nail it we feel good onside and we see things different, posting how we fell the worlds rolls around our heads heh, you can go and express how you feel about certain things just don't let the trolls drag you along with them . You can still mess with them tho, here I get called droidsheep ,I get insulted(apparently the bigger the insult the more right they are ), lucky I have a report button for those occasions, And honestly some people her are quite annoying... On a similar post I got bashed for thinking that a Nokia android phone could easily become a top seller (I'll buy it over a Galaxy any day, specially if its a nexus).
16. flynfree (Posts: 374; Member since: 09 Jun 2013)
@ PENNY. ..and it will not happen right now, let we see in the future.
22. user996 (Posts: 215; Member since: 25 Feb 2013)
typical android fanboys thay are interested only in android but they know nokias durability would be best forever
77. Whateverman (Posts: 3253; Member since: 17 May 2009)
I don't think it's that they hate the devices, I think the fanboys here have learn to hate other fanboys, and the best way to get under each other's skin is to talk about the thing they like most. When you see fanboy calling the 920 a brick, it's just a jab at the WP/Nokia fanboys. They fire back with plasticky, laggy, sh**p, or whatever. Next thing you know... Full blown flame war!
But again, you've hit the nail on the head. There will be a few Android users and fanboys backpedaling if this does happen. I just want to go on record and say I don't care if it's twice as thick as the 920, if it has Android in it... I'm getting it!
13. flynfree (Posts: 374; Member since: 09 Jun 2013)
Why Most of the OEM REFUSE to make handset for WP, IT IS ONLY NOKIA WILL FORCE to make handset for WP because of the agreement with 'em?
Poor Wp users!
15. papss (unregistered)
Is this the same Acer that is mediocre in just about everything they make? I could care less where Nokia goes because I would surely follow them. Hell it was reason enough to get me away from android and introduced to WP8 which I find to be a great OS.
18. flynfree (Posts: 374; Member since: 09 Jun 2013)
I agree, wp8 is great os, but didn't you notice. ..
only nokia make handset for them as of this day.
23. jdoee100 (Posts: 334; Member since: 04 Jun 2013)
If it's so great, why only 3% market share??
32. flynfree (Posts: 374; Member since: 09 Jun 2013)
Maybe because of lack of apps (free/paid), some says boring UI, no flash for Web streaming, low specs, no sd slot, except "S" made.
81. tashreef (Posts: 476; Member since: 24 Nov 2012)
no SD slots? Most of the lumias with WP8 have SD slots 820,720,620,520 .
25. protozeloz (Posts: 5396; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
Agree a bout Acer, their products aren't that good, relatively inferior than the rest on the same category, I only recommend it as a cheap trip computer you can toss and never care if it breaks but never as a primary device
72. -box- (Posts: 3991; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
I've never had a problem with Acer's stuff, especially their monitors. The only desktop I've bought (I build my own) was an Acer and it still works well. If I were in the market.for a store-bought computer or laptop, Acer and Asus would be at the top of my list.
