When there's smoke, there is fire. Every industry pundit was waiting for AT&T to join Verizon's shared data plans party soon after their release, and here they are...

Copy Cat, Copy Cat!!

Its not about being a copy cat. Its about what makes sense for the business and its customers. Also it just makes plain sense. People have been asking for years to have shared data.

9. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:40 6

I know they didnt ask at the prices and GB amounts we have got so far tho.

20. PAPINYC posted on 18 Jul 2012, 10:41 2 2

Don't know what 'people' you're talking about, I don't want shared data with anyone; I want both of my Verizon lines with Unlimited Data to remain independent. The only people that this benefits, seemingly based on tier plans, are people with 10 kids or more.

3. fervid posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:08 5 2

Add Data Rollover and I'm all over that! (Especially since they are the company with rollover and this wouldn't have that anymore being unlimited)

8. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:39 4 2

I think if thats added...I would leave Verizon in a heart beat. Maybe...lol.

4. dcgore posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:15 6

And consumers again get the short end of the stick.

5. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:16 4 3

Well....

I like that they have higher GB amounts. But....the plans are about the same price...in same cases more than Verizon...lol

Wow.

10. Beholder88 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:58 1

Verizon has the same exact GB amounts as what I see on this list. Actually seems like less variety. I don't see a 2GB, 8GB or 12GB option there.

13. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 08:14 2 1

They do...for the most part. Verizon has 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10GB. AT&T dont have 2 and 8GB.

The 1GB, 6GB plans are $5 more on AT&T. The 10GB plan is $10 more on AT&T. Thats why I mentioned it was more in some cases.

I do like that AT&T offers bigger GB amounts tho. I heard Verizon does too, but its not advertized alot. This is what someone came up with cuz Verizon does advertize an extra 2GB for $10:

"Its just $10 for every extra 2GB, no limit. So if $100 for 10GB is not enough, Pay another $20,$50, or $100 and get 14,20 or even 30GB."

If that is true.....20GB is $40 cheaper on Verizon.

I dont know if that extra 2GB is once a month you have to add it or does it stick until you remove it.. The difference I see so far is Verizon is $15 for each GB as overage and they give you the option to just add 2GB extra for $10....and you can add extra 2GB amounts. I just see $15 extra per GB AT&T. I have been studying these 2 carriers like mad as AT&T might have better service in my area.

15. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 09:10 1

Well...I forgot about the extra lines. Something I should have known since I have a 3 line family plan.

Doh. lol.

AT&T might be cheaper in some cases...depending on how many lines you have and how much data you want.

Bottom line....pretty soon we all might have to either pay extra for what we want or go to small carriers.

19. superguy posted on 18 Jul 2012, 10:41 1 2

AT&T seems to get cheaper with higher bandwidth and more than 3 phones.

Verizon seems to sell the bandwidth slightly cheaper than AT&T, but keeps the device fees flat. AT&T charges a little more for data in some cases, but the device fee drops with the higher data plans. For smartphones, anyway.

In most cases, the cost ends up being about the same with Verizon, with a few bucks different between the two here and there. AT&T seems to make more sense if you have a larger family though.

Verizon has a better overage price if you happen to run over. Rollover would be nice too.

This confirms my love for big magenta (aka t-mobile)

7. dcgore posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:29 3

Honestly! Im thinking about switching to one of their pre-paid plans. I would be saving more than half of what i pay now. It's crazy.

11. -box- posted on 18 Jul 2012, 07:59 1 1

Well phooey. I was hoping they'd undercut Verizon a bit more. Guess they have done sort of agreement not to be too out of whack with each other. They were matched price-wise and feature wise for the longest time, until Verizon bumped its data tiers starting at $30 for 2GB, while AT&T kept their 2GB price at $25 (though moved to 3GB for $30 early this year). AT&T still seems to offer better value as they offer unlimited mobile calling with their messaging bundles (for those not on a shared data plan as that is unlimited minutes, like Verizon)

I hope that non-unlimited minute plans with shared data comes available, as I don't want to pay a premium for minutes I'm not using

12. DigitalMD posted on 18 Jul 2012, 08:06 3 2

More evidence (as if we needed it) of the obvious collusion in the industry. Another way to rip off consumers

14. JunitoNH posted on 18 Jul 2012, 08:32 4 1

Wow talk about price fixing. I wonder if both CEO, CFO, & COO call each other up or play golf together. I can only imagine the conversations, " hey, McAdam how are your sheep doing? Ah.. they are k but going to wait a bit before next price increase. Can you believe they think Android provides freedom? I sure locked that boot loader on them, ha ha ha resistance is futile. And how are yours Randall? Well, gave them unlimited data, then got them addicted to the stuff like crack, turned around and took it from them. See, I'm smart, told them the average user only uses about 750M of data. Now they have to pay for overages. Can you believe some idiot call my office and wanted to use the iPhone without data? They are so stupid, I thinking of charging for FaceTime over cellular connections, what do you think? Well I'll wait to see how you make out first"

16. Sniggly posted on 18 Jul 2012, 09:14 4 1

For six gigs of data and four smartphones (what I would probably need) AT&T does undercut Verizon... by about ten bucks a month. I'm not going to do the math right now, but I don't think this plan quite cuts it. I do like how opting into the plan is voluntary, but will that be the case for new customers as well?

17. Quezdagreat posted on 18 Jul 2012, 09:23 1

I love these plans. Compared to my current bill, I would be saving and getting 5 times more data than I do now if I choose the 10gb plan.

24. dcgore posted on 18 Jul 2012, 12:25 1 1

Well, that's a good thing on your case but mostly the single individuals like me are getting killed by these plans. Currently i pay $90 per month before taxes and insurance, with the new plan i would have to pay $110.

26. Quezdagreat posted on 18 Jul 2012, 13:22 1 1

you don't need this since you only have one device. This is meant for multiple devices.

18. Jeradiah3 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 09:36 1

I'll keep what my wife and I have. she has the unltd data plan and wont get rid of it. i can see the business sense, but i dont see how you are saving money

21. superguy posted on 18 Jul 2012, 10:43 1 2

In some cases you can, in some you can't. Depends on what your needs are.

It can work out great for single folks like me. I can get a better plan for less money. There are cases where it doesn't work for others though. So at least AT&T isn't forcing people onto their shared plans like Verizon is. If it works for you, you can keep what you have. Might even be able to try the others and switch back.

While I'm not thrilled with the pricing and bandwidth limits, I think AT&T is taking the better approach by making them optional rather than Verizon's mandatory approach.

25. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 12:54 1 1

On Verizon its optional for current customers. If one is already on tiered data and a current customer, you dont have to take the shared data plans.

Now that I see for me with 3 lines to go to AT&T and save about $10 a month....its not even worth it.

And it looks like 20GB is cheaper on Verizon if one can keep adding 2GB til they get to 20GB. This is a nice lil breakdown someone did at another site:

VZW 1 Phone 1 GB: $90 ($40+$50); 2 Phones: $130; 3 Phones $170
AT&T 1 Phone 1 GB: $85 ($45+$40); 2 Phones: $130; 3 Phones $175

VZW 1 Phone 4 GB: $110 ($40+$70); 2 Phones: $150; 3 Phones $190
AT&T 1 Phone 4 GB: $110 ($40+$70); 2 Phones: $150; 3 Phones $190

VZW 1 Phone 6 GB: $120 ($40+$80); 2 Phones: $160; 3 Phones $200
AT&T 1 Phone 6 GB: $125 ($35+$90); 2 Phones: $160; 3 Phones $195

VZW 1 Phone 10 GB: $140 ($40+$100); 2 Phones: $180; 3 Phones $220
AT&T 1 Phone 10 GB: $150 ($30+$120); 2 Phones: $180; 3 Phones $210

I came up with this if my calculation are right:

20GB

ATT
230 1 phone
260 2 phones
290 3 phones

Verizon
190 1 phone
230 2 phones
270 3 phones

Thats only if one can stack 2GB to the 10GB plan til they get to 20GB on Verizon.

28. networkdood posted on 18 Jul 2012, 13:38 2

jroc, he meant that it is not optional for VZW customers if they upgrade, while with AT&T customers, it is. Either way it is a screwy deal.

30. jroc74 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 16:10 1 1

Yea...I agree. The lesser of 1 evils...? lol.

Unless Verizon changed something recently...if you are already a customer....you dont have to go to the shared plans.

I just tried to use an upgrade I have right now....I have the option to keep existing plan...and the old tiered plans are available.

Even if I was to do it with my unlimited line...the old plans are available for me.

22. MrsTylon posted on 18 Jul 2012, 11:08 2

I am thrilled about this! I was actually thinking of switching over to Verizon because it would save me so much money. I have 3 smartphones on my plan and we all have different data packages, so this will really cut down my data cost. I also happen to work for a wireless company that sells both ATT and Verizon so this is just another tool for me to give my customers more choices. One thing it did not mention unless I missed it on the Verizon plans you also can turn your phone into a mobile hotspot with no extra charge, and right now with ATT you only get mobile hotspot with the 5GB plan, so I wonder if ATT is going to offer free mobile hotspot as well.

23. dha_george posted on 18 Jul 2012, 12:17 2

yes mobile hot spot will be included with the new shared data plans

27. networkdood posted on 18 Jul 2012, 13:36 2

Not even worth it unless you already pay for unlimited talk and text and have 30.00 or more of data on all of your smartphones.

BUT....at least AT&T customer are not forced onto this plan after an upgrade. That is huge...

33. So-Sayz-Eye posted on 18 Jul 2012, 17:34 1

This is just a big rip off. What about if you dont want unlimited talk. I text and use web more then I make voice calls, so why am I paying more for something I dont need. Give me my 700 minutes with rollover and let me share my date and drop those additional phones by half and we have deal.

I cant believe they waited a year+ to announce such crappy options

34. Androidluv posted on 18 Jul 2012, 19:15 1

Why am I not surprised???

35. joey18 posted on 18 Jul 2012, 21:04 1

The only big winners here are tmobile and sprint this prices are overprice so now verizon ae the big winner

38. Forsaken77 posted on 19 Jul 2012, 00:26 1

Frigin ridiculous!!! I want to have my 2 GB's of data ($25/month) and share it across 3 phones. SIMPLE! 2 phones use the 200 MB plan ($15/month) and 1 phone uses the 2 GB plan ($25/month). That's $55 total for 3 phones of data. I want to pay $25/month for the 2 GB's and share it with the other 2 phones. All of these phones are mostly always on Wifi, so cellular data isn't needed that much. Between wireless at home, work, hotspots, and the cable company has wifi almost everywhere for free if you're a regular internet customer... we don't need much data. They're charging you extra just to share the data, when they shouldn't be. These plans will cost $45/phone?!! To share 1 GB?!! WTF!!! That either makes no sense at all, or I'm reading it wrong. We also have a feature phone on the account (4 phones total) but it doesn't use any data. So that phone, which right now only costs an additional $10 for the line, would cost $30? These plans really suck balls. I totally thought I'd be able to share the 2 GB's across all devices for no extra cost. I'm paying for 2 GB's... let me use it. This is basically a tethering charge under a different name.

39. Forsaken77 posted on 19 Jul 2012, 00:45 1

Now that I think about it... this IS a tethering charge under a different name. Scammers!

40. vvelez5 posted on 19 Jul 2012, 01:45 1

Not too impressed by the pricing from both carriers. It's just cheaper for me to keep my current plan, I don't see any reason to change.
