ARM reports strong Q1, 2.6 billion ARM-based chips have been shipped

0. phoneArena 23 Apr 2013, 04:59 posted on

ARM, the company behind something like 99% of the processors powering smartphones and tablets nowadays, has reported a strong first quarter of 2013. Thanks to the still growing smartphone and tablet markets, as well as the company's penetration in other areas such as digital TV and wearable technology, ARM has enjoyed significantly bigger income from royalties compared to the same period last year...

Best luck ARM! I hope future servers will be powered by ARM chips... that'd save a hell lot of energy. Everycomputational device should be solar powered.

we can only hope for that day. for now intel and ibm have their own SoCs which are powerful and efficient enough. atleast for 2 decades market isnt shifting.

Intels about to shoot arm down, soon they will be the cheap alternative company thats failing just like AMD. Arm will only be featured in cheap/midrange phones in a few years while flagships are powered by intel.

Can someone explain this to me? Samsung , Nvidia , Rockchip, Mediatek Qualcomm etc makes their own chips, does that mean they are paying ARM like some form of a license fee or something for every cpu that they make?

yup like 10 cents per chip. dont quote me. its just an example. so ARM is basically designs architecture of SoC and other companies use that under license and pay loyalty. Side note Qualcomm also makes its own designs so sometimes it doesnt have to pay ARM.

I'm guessing the 2.6 billion figure stands for the overall number of ARM chips on the market.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Correction, I was wrong.. it is indeed the number for the chips shipped in the quarter only.
Apparently the overall number is in the range of over 40 billion:

At least 50 % of CPUs for tablets are by Qualcomm. So ARM have only smaller half of smartphone/tablet market. Qualcomm pay to ARM particularly for ARM architecture instruction set and this is not any technology at all...
